This science fails to tell us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pantheism and Christianity Nearly all writers on Pantheism trace its origin to India M. Maret reaches the climax of his argument against the French philosophers, by Showing that their doctrines came from India, 'the mother of superstitions.' Pierre Leroux, one of Maret's ablest Opponents, admitted the fact of his agreement on many subjects with the Indian sages, and added, with an air of triumph, that all religions and all philosophies have their root' in India, and that had Pantheism not been found in India that would have been a strong argument against its truth, for then humanity would have erred in its beginning.' In India the creed of modern intellect is combined with the worship of an infinity of gods. This is the problem of the Indian religion; this is the puzzle on every Hindu temple. When this problem is solved for Hinduism, there will be light shed on a similar problem that presents itself in nearly all religions. M. Leroux again truly says, 'the religion of India does not concern India alone it concerns humanity.' The history of men's thoughts on the greatest questions on which they can be exercised, God and creation, is every where substantially the same. There may be different stages of progress, the development may be checked or stunted, there may be abnormal growth; but however great the phenomenal variety, there is always a real identity. It is in India that we can trace the fullest development of religious thought. The continuity is less broken. We seem here at the fountain-head of natural religion, and can follow the stream flowing onward with but little interruption to where we now stand. In other countries, the succession has passed from one nation to another, and its course cannot always be traced; but in India the connection is visible between the first men capable of worship, and the latest and best thoughts of the furthest-reaching philosophies, as well as the worst developments of the popular religion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of modern scientific pantheism is reverence for Nature and the Universe. It offers a challenging alternative, beyond theism and atheism, with a joyful approach to our lives and a caring concern for all life on this earth. Pantheism is a 2,500 year-old belief system expressed by many famous thinkers and artists including Lao Tzu, Heraclitus, Spinoza, Wordsworth, Whitman, Emerson, Einstein and Carl Sagan.Today pantheism is seeing a revival as the underlying world view of many environmentalists, of leading scientists, of nature-revering pagans, and of non-theists looking for a more embracing perspective. This accessible and authoritative handbook is the only available introduction to the history, theory and practice of pantheism.Reviews from Amazon Probably the best book to recommend to someone who is no longer comfortable living with the intellectual compromises necessary to maintain a traditional "faith." This book is a gem, with useful contextual information and insights on every page. George FaulkneronMust read. Wonderful book for exploring a way to approach religion in a scientific world. Brady Walker This book is the perfect introduction to Pantheism. It's well written and to the point. Tells what Pantheism is and what it isn't, offers a history and gives basic practices. Fantastic! Tag JonesThis book is surely one of the most extraordinary books written in recent years about the subject of religion. Dr Bill BruehlHighly impressed with this book and author. He carefully explained the beliefs of Pantheists without being condescending or judgmental toward other belief systems. This is a book I will keep to refer back to in future. Book excerpt: Many people who do not believe in God believe that 'everything is God' - that everything is part of an all-inclusive divine unity. In Pantheism, this concept is presented as a legitimate position and its philosophical basis is examined. Michael Levine compares it to theism, and discusses the scope for resolving the problems inherent in theism through pantheism. He also considers the implications of pantheism in terms of practice. This book will appeal to those who study philosophy or theology. It will also be of interest to anyone who does not believe in a personal God, but does have faith in a higher unifying force, and is interested in the justification of this as a legitimate system of thought.

Download or read book Pantheism written by James Allanson Picton and published by . This book was released on 1905 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the intro: "Pantheism differs from the systems of belief constituting the main religions of the world in being comparatively free from any limits of period, climate, or race. For while what we roughly call the Egyptian Religion, the Vedic Religion, the Greek Religion, Buddhism, and others of similar fame have been necessarily local and temporary, Pantheism has been, for the most part, a dimly discerned background, an esoteric significance of many or all religions, rather than a "denomination" by itself. The best illustration of this characteristic of Pantheism is the catholicity of its great prophet Spinoza. For he felt so little antagonism to any Christian sect, that he never urged any member of a church to leave it, but rather encouraged his humbler friends, who sought his advice, to make full use of such spiritual privileges as they appreciated most. He could not, indeed, content himself with the fragmentary forms of any sectarian creed. But in the few writings which he made some effort to adapt to the popular understanding, he seems to think it possible that the faith of Pantheism might some day leaven all religions alike. I shall endeavour briefly to sketch the story of that faith, and to suggest its significance for the future. But first we must know what it means. Pantheism, then, being a term derived from two Greek words signifying "all" and "God," suggests to a certain extent its own meaning. Thus, if Atheism be taken to mean a denial of the being of God, Pantheism is its extreme opposite; because Pantheism declares that there is nothing but God. This, however, needs explanation. For no Pantheist has ever held God is All.that everything is God, any more than a teacher of physiology, in enforcing on his students the unity of the human organism, would insist that every toe and finger is the man. But such a teacher, at least in But not Everything Is God.these days, would almost certainly warn his pupils against the notion that the man can be really divided into limbs, or organs, or faculties, or even into soul and body. Indeed, he might without affectation adopt the language of a much controverted creed, so far as to pronounce that Analogy of the Human Organism."the reasonable soul and flesh is one man"-"one altogether." In this view, the man is the unity of all organs and faculties. But it does not in the least follow that any of these organs or faculties, or even a selection of them, is the man."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Pantheistic Idea of an Impersonal-Substance-Deity: As Contrasted With the Christian Faith Concerning Almighty God The Object proposed in these lectures is as fol lows: TO show, after stating scientifically the vast and disastrous heresy of the ages, that mod ern lines of thought, professed modern discoveries, and modern theories of human progress, of history, of ethics, and of religion, are but new developments of the spirit which invented that fatal system that they run in parallel lines with it; that they lead to the same conclusions. The author entertains no doubt of the fact of this correspondence. It is not necessary to prove identity of origin: it is enough to Show that 'the principle which underlies the whole system of modern speculation involves the results which were reached by the ancient philoso phies, and that the movement is toward the very same position of a final and universal skepticism. After that, it matters little whether the writers of our day consent or decline to be classed as follow ers of the old pagan masters. They labor toward the same ends, and are walking in the same dirce tion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Active Universe

Download or read book The Active Universe written by H. W. Piper and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of 'Romantic Pantheism' and its part in the development of the Romantic theory of the Imagination. The crucial point in the history of English Romanticism came when the philosophical concept of the 'active universe' met the developing theory of the Imagination. In its leading sense, Imagination meant full response to, and implication with, the living qualities of natural objects. That is why it was able to assimilate and transform contemporary theories of merely passing interest into an important poetic approach to the universe.

Book Pantheism Its Story and Significance

Download or read book Pantheism Its Story and Significance written by J. Allanson Picton and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pantheism is a philosophical and/or religious world view that sees the entire universe as a single, eternal, divine unity. It usually goes hand in hand with monism-the idea that the universe is made up of a single substance (matter) in a multitude of changing forms. Since nothing exists outside of this all-encompassing whole, the universe itself must be God. The Pantheistic God is not an anthropomorphic god, and individual believers differ on the level of divinity to ascribe to the deity. This ambiguity allows Pantheism to be compatible with the beliefs of various religions or even with the personal philosophies of secular freethinkers. Pantheism: Its Story and Significance is an essay by J. Allanson Picton that was originally published in 1905 as a 94-page book. Picton defines Pantheism and offers a brief overview of its history. The whole book centers, not surprisingly, around the writings of the philosopher Baruch Spinoza. The title of the work and its brevity might lead you to believe that it's an elementary overview, but it really requires a good deal of prior philosophical knowledge on the part of the reader. Spinoza's Ethics is one of the most challenging books I've ever read, but somehow Picton manages to make Spinozan Pantheism sound even more complicated than Spinoza himself did. Picton opens with a discussion of Pantheistic beliefs among the ancient cultures of India, Egypt, and Greece. He explains that Chinese Buddhism is not a form of Pantheism, but he doesn't even mention Daoism, which is. When Picton discusses whether various philosophies or religions were Pantheistic, he expects the reader to know their doctrines beforehand. When he brings up the Neo-Platonists or Hegel, for example, he assumes that the reader is already familiar with their works. Picton explains clearly how Pantheism differs from Atheism, and tends to emphasize how much Pantheism agrees with mainstream religions rather than how it differs from them. At one point he even goes so far as to compare Spinoza with Jesus. Throughout the book Picton seems to be leery of offending Christians. He doesn't even mention prominent Pantheists Giordano Bruno, who was burned as a heretic, or John Toland, who published radical anti-Church tracts. Only in the concluding paragraphs does Picton indicate some sympathy towards a freethought viewpoint within the broad assertion that Pantheism can unite believers of all creeds or beliefs. In the original printed volume, each paragraph had a subtitle printed along its margin. In the Kindle file that's available for free on Amazon, these subtitles were converted into separate lines in the text that begin with "[Sidenote: ." Unfortunately the sidenotes don't always appear next to the paragraph they refer to. Eventually the reader learns to ignore these annoyances and just read the text. There are also footnotes at the end of every chapter, but not necessarily footnote numbers within the text to indicate what passages they refer to.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idea of God The idea of God is so variously defined that we make bold to say that every single individual has a conception of his own. There are no two alike, and the idea of God among different persons is indic ative of their character, for every man creates his God in his own image. There was a brave officer in the Austrian army nu der Prince Eugene. When once in his presence the problem of God's existence was discussed, he clapped his hand on his sword and said: Gentlemen, I stand up for God with my sword, I challenge whoever denies him and, so help me God, I'll conquer him.
