Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pamphlet in Defence of the Game Laws: In Reply to the Assailants; And on Their Effects Upon the Morals of the Poor In these days it seems to have become the peculiar province of some Members of Parliament, and of men desirous to obtain a little brief notoriety, to seize upon one individual law, no matter how good it may be, at which to run a tilt. It is, then, the duty of less Quixotic people, and of those free from this species of monomania, to lift up their hand and voice against so dangerous and prevalent a sin, and to endeavour to uphold all institutions which "work well," against such mischievous infraction. I have frequently found it my duty to cry out against attempted oppressions of the poor, whether those oppressions sought their reign, either cloaked by a false desire for an undue character of sanctity, as in the attempted refusal of a warm dinner to the hungry labourer on the Sunday - the only day he had the chance of eating it; or, on the other hand, by the refusal of fresh air by steam conveyance, to the stifled and consumptive mechanic and manufacturer.
