Book Dream Patterns

Download or read book Dream Patterns written by Jonson Miller and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dream Patterns" teaches readers to identify the significant, meaningful patterns in their dreams and how to use that knowledge to make changes in their waking lives. Almost every book on dream interpretation emphasizes the interpretation of individual elements of individual dreams. But dreams contain much imagery that is not meaningful or interpretable. "Dream Patterns" shows how to break through the noise created by physical sensations, events of the previous day, intrusions of conscious thinking, and other stimuli to reveal repeating imagery and themes that reflect unrecognized patterns in our waking lives. Awareness of these patterns liberates us from them and empowers us to live our life more skillfully. This book is for dreamers of all skill levels, from people who rarely recall and have never before studied their dreams to people who have spent years studying their dreams but who want to get more out of them. You will learn how to recall, record, and analyze your dreams, and then how to apply the lessons of those dreams to your waking lives. While "Dream Patterns" emphasizes long-term patterns and expresses skepticism about the value of most individual dreams, it does teach you also to recognize and benefit from those few dreams that really are significant in isolation. Such dreams include “big dreams” that reflect major life and spiritual changes.

Book Dreaming Souls

    Book Details:
  • Author : Owen Flanagan
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2001-05-17
  • ISBN : 019534958X
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Dreaming Souls written by Owen Flanagan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, if anything, do dreams tell us about ourselves? What is the relationship between types of sleep and types of dreams? Does dreaming serve any purpose? Or are dreams simply meaningless mental noise--"unmusical fingers wandering over the piano keys"? With expertise in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, Owen Flanagan is uniquely qualified to answer these questions. And in Dreaming Souls he provides both an accessible survey of the latest research on sleep and dreams and a compelling new theory about the nature and function of dreaming. Flanagan argues that while sleep has a clear biological function and adaptive value, dreams are merely side effects, "free riders," irrelevant from an evolutionary point of view. But dreams are hardly unimportant. Indeed, Flanagan argues that dreams are self-expressive, the result of our need to find or to create meaning, even when we're sleeping. Rejecting Freud's theory of manifest and latent content--of repressed wishes appearing in disguised form--Flanagan shows how brainstem activity during sleep generates a jumbled profusion of memories, images, thoughts, emotions, and desires, which the cerebral cortex then attempts to shape into a more or less coherent story. Such dream-narratives range from the relatively mundane worries of non REM sleep to the fantastic confabulations of deep REM that resemble psychotic episodes in their strangeness. But however bizarre these narratives may be, they can shed light on our mental life, our well being, and our sense of self. Written with clarity, lively wit, and remarkable insight, Dreaming Souls offers a fascinating new way of apprehending one of the oldest mysteries of mental life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Impressive . . . [Cristina García’s] story is about three generations of Cuban women and their separate responses to the revolution. Her special feat is to tell it in a style as warm and gentle as the ‘sustaining aromas of vanilla and almond,’ as rhythmic as the music of Beny Moré.”—Time Cristina García’s acclaimed book is the haunting, bittersweet story of a family experiencing a country’s revolution and the revelations that follow. The lives of Celia del Pino and her husband, daughters, and grandchildren mirror the magical realism of Cuba itself, a landscape of beauty and poverty, idealism and corruption. Dreaming in Cuban is “a work that possesses both the intimacy of a Chekov story and the hallucinatory magic of a novel by Gabriel García Márquez” (The New York Times). In celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the novel’s original publication, this edition features a new introduction by the author. Praise for Dreaming in Cuban “Remarkable . . . an intricate weaving of dramatic events with the supernatural and the cosmic . . . evocative and lush.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Captures the pain, the distance, the frustrations and the dreams of these family dramas with a vivid, poetic prose.”—The Washington Post “Brilliant . . . With tremendous skill, passion and humor, García just may have written the definitive story of Cuban exiles and some of those they left behind.”—The Denver Post

Our minds are speaking to us in codes: warning, helping, and guiding us through our constantly evolving situations in life. The mind, through dreams, is trying to alert us to problems it wants fixed. The truth is, our best thinking isn't done in the shower, it's done while we dream. In fact, when we say, "Let me sleep on it," what we're really saying is, "Let me dream on it." In this easy-to-use guide, renowned dream analyst Lauri Quinn Loewenberg gives you the tools to interpret the often confounding language of dreams. You will learn how to: * unlock the hidden dream communications your mind wants you to know * understand commonly occurring people, places and animals as extensions of your personality * decipher the real meaning behind nightmares like falling, drowning, and being chased * discover the big messages in seemingly small dream elements as Lauri guides you through dozens of real-life dreams * use your dreams as a tool to solve your everyday problems and effect real change in your life and relationships * reference the most important dream symbols with a comprehensive dream dictionary

Book Dreaming on Both Sides of the Brain

Download or read book Dreaming on Both Sides of the Brain written by Doris E. Cohen and published by Hampton Roads Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dream is not just white noise or something that happens to you while you sleep. Dreams are the secret language of your unconscious. This book will teach you how to: • Unlock the secrets of your personal dream language • Explore and interpret the meaning of your dreams • Harness the power of the brain to uncover a life of greater richness and meaning So often when we awake we find that our dreams have either evaporated like mist or seem to be just on the edge of our memory. Many people cannot recall their dreams at all. Cohen has developed a 7-step process to let you tap into the rich repository of your subconscious: 1. Recall and record. 2. Title your dream. 3. Read or repeat aloud. 4. Consider what is uppermost in your life right now. 5. Describe your dream's objects and qualities as if you were talking to a Martian. 6. Summarize the message from the unconscious. 7. Consider the dream's guidance for waking life. Drawing on years of clinical experience and her familiarity with Freud, myth, and sacred writings, Cohen presents a program that results in a life of abundance, texture, and self-awareness.

Book Interpreting across Boundaries

Download or read book Interpreting across Boundaries written by Gerald James Larson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a "state-of-the-art" assessment of comparative philosophy written by some of the leading practitioners of the field. While its primary focus is on gaining methodological clarity regarding the comparative enterprise of "interpreting across boundaries," the book also contains new substantive essays on Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and European thought. The contributors are Roger T. Ames, William Theodore de Bary, Wing-tsit Chan, A. S. Cua, Eliot Deutsch, Charles Hartshorne, Daya Krishna, Gerald James Larson, Sengaku Mayeda, Hajime Nakamura, Raimundo Panikkar, Karl H. Potter, Henry Rosemont, Jr., Ben-Ami Scharfstein, Ninian Smart, Fritz Staal, and Frederick J. Streng. Comparative or cross-cultural philosophy can be seen as a relative newcomer to the field of philosophy. It has its antecedents in the emergence of comparative studies in nineteenth-century European intellectual history, as well as in the sequence of East-West Philosophers' Conferences at the University of Hawaii, which began in 1939. This book will prove to be of great significance in helping to define a field that is only now becoming fully self-conscious, methodologically and substantively, about its role and function in the larger enterprises of philosophy and comparative studies. Originally published in 1988. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions.
