Book excerpt: An in-depth look at the greatest hoax in radio history and the panic that followed, which Publishers Weekly calls "a rollicking portrait of a director on the cusp of greatness" and Booklist, in a starred review, says, "Hazelgrove’s feverishly focused retelling of the broadcast as well as the fallout makes for a propulsive read as a study of both a cultural moment of mass hysteria and the singular voice at its root.” On a warm Halloween Eve, October 30, 1938, during a broadcast of H G. Wells’ War of the Worlds, a twenty-three-year-old Orson Welles held his hands up for radio silence in the CBS studio in New York City while millions of people ran out into the night screaming, grabbed shotguns, drove off in cars, and hid in basements, attics, or anywhere they could find to get away from Martians intent on exterminating the human race. As Welles held up his hands to his fellow actors, musicians, and sound technicians, he turned six seconds of radio silence—dead air—into absolute horror, changing the way the world would view media forever, and making himself one of the most famous men in America. In Dead Air: The Night that Orson Welles Terrified America, Willliam Elliot Hazelgrove illustrates for the first time how Orson Welles’ broadcast caused massive panic in the United States, convincing listeners across the nation that the end of the World had arrived and even leading military and government officials to become involved. Using newspaper accounts of the broadcast, Hazelgrove shows the true, staggering effect that Welles’ opera of panic had on the nation. Beginning with Welles’ incredible rise from a young man who lost his parents early to a child prodigy of the stage, Dead Air introduces a Welles who threw his Hail Mary with War of the Worlds, knowing full well that obscurity and fame are two sides of the same coin. Hazelgrove demonstrates that Welles’ knew he had one shot to grab the limelight before it forever passed him by—and he made it count.

  • Pages : 489 pages

Download or read book Our Blue Planet written by Ben Ford and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Blue Planet provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of maritime and underwater archaeology. Situating the field within the broader study of history and archaeology, this book advocates that an understanding of how our ancestors interacted with rivers, lakes, and oceans is integral to comprehending the human past. Our Blue Planet covers the full breadth of maritime and underwater archaeology, including formerly terrestrial sites drowned by rising sea levels, coastal sites, and a wide variety of wreck sites ranging across the globe and spanning from antiquity to World War II.Beginning with a definition of the field and several chapters dedicated to the methods of finding, recording, and interpreting submerged sites, Our Blue Planet provides an entry point for all readers, whether or not they are familiar with maritime and underwater archaeology or archaeology in general. The book then shifts to a thematic approach with chapters exploring human interactions with the watery world, both along the coasts and by ship. These chapters discuss the relationships between culture, technology, and environment that allowed humans through time to spread across the globe. Because ships were the primary means for humans to interact with large bodies of water, they are the focus of several chapters on the development of shipbuilding technology, the lives of sailors, and the uses of ships in exploration, expansion, and warfare. The book ends with chapters on how and why the non-renewable submerged archaeological record should be managed, so that both current and future generations can learn from the achievements and failures of past societies, as well as on how anyone can become involved in maritime and underwater archaeology. Throughout, the reader benefits from the personal reflections of a number of leading figures in the field.

Book A Small Treatise on Wisdom

  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book A Small Treatise on Wisdom written by Gabriel Michel De La Rochemaillet and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1601, a respected cleric in rural France lit a fire, one which set off alarms across Europe, and which continues to burn four hundred years later. A sought-after speaker and author of theological and apologetic books, Pierre Charron (1541-1603) was not previously known as an arsonist. His life was relatively quiet and comfortable, enjoying a teaching post in the city of Condom. But when he published a book on ethics, "On Wisdom", containing phrases like: "All religions have his in common, that they're strange & horrible to common sense; ...we are circumcised, baptized, Jews, Muslims, Christians, before we know that we're humans: our religion is not our choice"; "...the immortality of the soul is the most universally, religiously, laudably accepted belief on earth, [and] the most weakly proved & established"; "...man believes that the heavens, the stars, the whole great celestial movement & oscillation of the world, is made only for his benefit...[he] is quite ridiculous"; "man mistakenly & vainly glorifies himself so far above animals"; "...indeed, what is the ultimate & supreme happiness if not an assured & perpetual state of pleasure?"It made no difference that these expressions were carefully qualified and explained: they had been published, with royal approval, by a priest in good standing. His book was loudly criticized and opposed. Charron replied that, if "had been received & accepted by the masses, it would have fallen short of its ambitions"! He replied to his critics in this "Small Treatise on Wisdom", as an alternative to the larger and more difficult work. This book was initially published posthumously; he died of a stroke just as his fame was beginning to spread.Although he is frequently ignored or dismissed, Charron was once quite well known in European intellectual circles, where he was considered equal or even superior to his friend Montaigne. His writings influenced Gassendi, Descartes, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Pascal, Bayle, and many others. Charron is a writer of many appreciable facets: the liberal and skeptical theologian, the bold and pioneering forefather of the Enlightenment, and quite simply as a challenging, complex, original thinker. He deserves a second look, perhaps a second life.
