Book Greek Americans

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter C. Moskos
  • Publisher : Transaction Publishers
  • Release : 2013-11-27
  • ISBN : 1412853109

Download or read book Greek Americans written by Peter C. Moskos and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an engrossing account of Greek Americans—their history, strengths, conflicts, aspirations, and contributions. Blending sociological insight with historical detail, Peter C. and Charles C. Moskos trace the Greek-American experience from the wave of mass immigration in the early 1900s to today. This is the story of immigrants, most of whom worked hard to secure middle-class status. It is also the story of their children and grandchildren, many of whom maintain an attachment to Greek ethnic identity even as they have become one of America’s most successful ethnic groups. As the authors rightly note, the true measure of Greek-Americans is the immigrants themselves who came to America without knowing the language and without education. They raised solid families in the new country and shouldered responsibilities for those in the old. They laid the basis for an enduring Greek-American community. Included in this completely revised edition is an introduction by Michael Dukakis and chapters relating to the early struggles of Greeks in America, the Greek Orthodox Church, success in America, and the survival and expansion of Greek identity despite intermarriage. This work will be of value to scholars of ethnic studies, those interested in Greek culture and communities, and sociologists and historians.

Book From Pythagoras to Salt Lake City

Download or read book From Pythagoras to Salt Lake City written by John Andreadakis and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-08-10 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an expanded perspective of Greek History and aspects of both old and Modern Greek history that you would not find elsewhere. Greek and Hebrew languages and writing have nothing in common, yet their alphabets are identical. What does this mean? Where was the Greek language developed? Was it developed in Athens? No, not really. Pythagoras left his country to learn. He learned mathematics to teach us even in our days. But he also found the existence of a true and caring God and wanted his people to know it also. As Pythagoras of old in a similar fashion, the author of this book left Greece and immigrated to the United States to learn electronics. He used to think that religion was the knowledge of stories about good men God loved, but only in the old days, not today. Two young missionaries knocked on his door and taught him that a true religion is a set of principles we needed to strive to learn and follow. How can a person know if a church is true? The author's life combined with the discovery of such principles gave him a happier way of life and his children are blessed because of it also. Faith, humility, honesty, integrity, and many other principles are what our world is in need of today and are well documented in this book. These principles make everyone a better person, a happier person in a better society. Is Salt Lake City a good milestone? It has been for this author and for many other people from all walks of life.

Book Colom of Catalonia

Download or read book Colom of Catalonia written by Charles J. Merrill and published by DeMers Books Llc (US). This book was released on 2008 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long overdue in the eyes of many scholars, this comprehensive examination into the life of Christopher Columbus rehearses the many alternative theories of Columbus’s origins and the objections each has to the Italian theory of his birth. School children around the world are taught that Christopher Columbus was Italian, or, more precisely, a Genoese who sailed to the New World for the Spanish only because that country’s sovereigns gave him the money for the project; many scholars throughout history, however, have cast doubt onto this version of the explorer’s story. After digging up these counter-cultural theories and discussing their individual merits and prejudices, this scholarly investigation selects the theory most likely to be true: Christopher Columbus was a Catalan, born in the principality of Catalonia, a member of a family hostile to the dynasty that ruled his newly united country.

Book Christopher Columbus

Download or read book Christopher Columbus written by Christopher Brink and published by Cavendish Square Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2018-07-15 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few people in history have had as significant an impact on the shaping of multiple cultures as Christopher Columbus, the explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492 in search of a sea route from Europe to Asia. He has been widely admired throughout history for his persistence, courage, charisma, and impressive nautical and navigational skills, particularly considering his lack of formal education. However, he has been the target of significant criticism due to his perceived cruelty toward the native inhabitants of the islands he discovered, his ineptitude at governing the colony he founded, and his tendency toward dishonesty and manipulation of others when it suited his purposes. This book seeks to provide the reader with a balanced perspective of Columbus's personality, achievements, and far-reaching effects on cultures on both sides of the Atlantic.

Book excerpt: Reveals an explosive new theory that challenges the famous tale of Columbus. Was he possibly a French pirate, or a Mallorcan navigator, or even the scion of some royal or noble family? If he was a penniless castaway of common birth, how could he marry into Portuguese nobility & gain the support of Queen Isabella & King Ferdinand? Where & how did he obtain the maps that showed his "discovery" in advance? Historians admit that much of what has been accepted & taught is, in fact, a myth. Through meticulous research, Bradley offers a convincing explanation of Columbus's real mission -- one of the most evocative in history.

Book Christopher Columbus

Download or read book Christopher Columbus written by Arnold K. Garr and published by Bookcraft, Incorporated. This book was released on 1992 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many books have been written about the life of Christopher Columbus and his New World discoveries, this one has a different thrust--that Columbus was not just a skilled, courageous sailor but was also a chosen instrument in the hands of God. For Latter-day Saints, this conclusion is implicit in a vision Nephi saw and recorded two thousand years or so before the time of Columbus. In relating that scripture to the fifteenth-century explorer, the author observes, modern prophets and Apostles have noted the significance of America in the Lord's plan for humankind, the historical necessity for its discovery, colonization, and development, and the raising up thereon of a free nation wherein the kingdom of God--the gospel and Church of Jesus Christ--could be restored and prospered, from which place it could go forth to all peoples in the latter days. Clearly the circumstances would call for a discoverer--the right man in the right place at the right time. This book profiles the man from Genoa who apparently yearned from childhood for the seafaring life and who early began to acquire the nautical knowledge and experience that would make him the most widely traveled seaman of his day and would help him rise to the top ranks in that career. Seized by the spirit of adventure, he began to formulate his plan for the "Enterprise of the Indies, " his dream of reaching East by sailing west. And finally, after eight frustrating years of seeking sponsorship in European courts, he persuaded Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain to finance the project. But adventure was not his only incentive. Stronger than that, it seems, was his spiritual motivation. A devout Christian, he gratefully and frequently credited God with all his blessings; he saw himself as a fulfillment of prophecy in this matter, as a literal instrument in God's hands; he was certain that he was God-inspired in his passionate quest for the westward route; and moreover, a major concern of his was to bring Christianity to the natives of the "Indies." Given this kind of spirit and his seafaring skills, and acknowledging his human weaknesses, Christopher Columbus seems to have been the kind of man the Lord could use for His purposes; and, indeed, modern Apostles and prophets quoted in this book affirm that he was that instrument. This interpretation is borne out also by the story told here of his four voyages to the New World. Published in 1992, the five-hundredth anniversary year of the first and most famous of those voyages, this book brings potent reminders of the important role played by a bold and courageous man who was chosen and guided as an essential forerunner of the restoration of the gospel.
