Book A New Scorpion Genus Representing a Primitive Taxon of Tribe Stahnkeini with a Description of a New Species from Sonora Mexico Scorpiones Vaejovidae

Download or read book A New Scorpion Genus Representing a Primitive Taxon of Tribe Stahnkeini with a Description of a New Species from Sonora Mexico Scorpiones Vaejovidae written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new scorpion genus, Gertschius gen. nov., and species, Gertschius crassicorpus sp. nov., (Scorpiones: Vaejovidae) from Sonora, Mexico is described. Gertschius exhibits a reduced modification of the basal pectinal teeth in the female holotype and serration of the chelal finger denticles is limited to the median denticles (MD), thus we consider it a relict member of tribe Stahnkeini. Serradigitus agilis Sissom et Stockwell, 1991, is transferred to this new genus; Gertschius agilis, comb. nov.

Book Contributions to Scorpion Systematics

Book excerpt: The diagnostic characters originally established by Herbert L. Stahnke in his description of genus Serradigitus are studied in detail from several new perspectives. A new genus, Stahnkeus, gen. nov., is described based on the presence of inner accessory (IAD) denticles on the chelal fingers, unprecedented in family Vaejovidae. Five species of Serradigitus are transferred to Stahnkeus: Stahnkeus harbisoni (Williams, 1970), comb. nov. (=Serradigitus harbisoni); Stahnkeus deserticola (Williams, 1970), comb. nov. (=Serradigitus deserticola); Stahnkeus subtilimanus (Soleglad, 1972), comb. nov. (=Serradigitus subtilimanus); Stahnkeus allredi (Sissom et Stockwell, 1991), comb. nov. (=Serradigitus allredi); and Stahnkeus polisi (Sissom et Stockwell, 1991), comb. nov. (=Serradigitus polisi). In this revision, a new tribe, Stahnkeini, trib. nov. (= Serradigitus + Stahnkeus), is formally described based on three unambiguous synapomorphies. Issues involving the taxonomic placement of species Serradigitus baueri, S. pacificus, S. bechteli and S. littoralis are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stockwell (1989), in an unpublished revision, suggested splitting the family Vaejovidae in two subfamilies, introducing also four tribes and four new genera. These results have not been reevaluated for 20 years. Here, we establish a new subfamily Smeringurinae, subfam. nov., with two tribes, four genera, and 40 species and subspecies. The subfamily Smeringurinae includes two tribes: Smeringurini, trib. nov. and Paravaejovini, trib. nov. The tribe Smeringurini includes three genera: Paruroctonus Werner, 1934; Smeringurus Haradon, 1983; and Vejovoidus Stahnke, 1974. The tribe Paravaejovini includes the genus Paravaejovis Williams, 1980. We restore from synonymy the subfamily Syntropinae Kraepelin, 1905, and significantly expand its scope to include two tribes, two subtribes, eight genera, and 75 species and subspecies. The subfamily Syntropinae includes two tribes: Stahnkeini Soleglad et Fet, 2006, and Syntropini Kraepelin, 1905. The tribe Stahnkeini includes four genera: Gertschius Graham et Soleglad, 2007; Serradigitus Stahnke, 1974; Stahnkeus Soleglad et Fet, 2006; and Wernerius, gen. nov. The tribe Syntropini includes two subtribes, Syntropina Kraepelin, 1905, and Thorelliina, subtrib. nov. The subtribe Syntropina includes two genera, Syntropis Kraepelin, 1900 and Hoffmannius, gen. nov. The subtribe Thorelliina includes two new genera, Thorellius, gen. nov. and Kochius, gen. nov. Four new genera accommodate species from the former "eusthenura," "intrepidus," "punctipalpi," and "spicatus" groups of Vaejovis. One new species from Durango, Mexico is described, Kochius kovariki Soleglad et Fet, sp. nov. Thorellius cristimanus, stat. nov. and T. atrox, stat. nov. are elevated to species from subspecies level. Our results confirm, in part, the phylogeny proposed by Stockwell (1989), with its further splitting of the overly inflated genus Vaejovis. The remaining default nominotypic subfamily, Vaejovinae Thorell, 1876, still unrevised at this time, is reduced to 66 species and subspecies, grouped in four genera, Franckeus, Pseudouroctonus, Uroctonites, and Vaejovis (the latter being divided into the "mexicanus" and "nigrescens" groups). Phylogenetic relationships within subfamilies Smeringurinae, Syntropinae, and Vaejovinae are discussed. As a result of the current revision, the family Vaejovidae now includes three subfamilies, four tribes, two subtribes, and 15 genera, with a total of 181 species-group taxa.

Six species comprise this new genus, distributed throughout Mexico (mainland as well as Baja California Sur): Franckeus nitidulus, F. rubrimanus, F. platnicki, F. minckleyi, F. kochi, and F. peninsularis. A new species of the Vaejovis "nigrescens" group, Vaejovis davidi, sp. nov., is also described.

Book Systematics of the North American Scorpion Subfamily Syntropinae Scorpiones Vaejovidae

Download or read book Systematics of the North American Scorpion Subfamily Syntropinae Scorpiones Vaejovidae written by Edmundo Gonzalez and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 3300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first phylogenetic analysis and taxonomic revision of the North American vaejovid scorpion subfamily Syntropinae Kraepelin, 1905 are presented. The phylogeny is based on a simultaneous analysis of DNA (5 loci) and morphological characters (continuous and discrete). The current classification of the subfamily (Soleglad and Fet, 2008) was tested for monophyly and the relative positions of insertae sedis taxa putatively related to the subfamily were investigated. Nodal stability and nodal support for the resultant topologies were high; although the molecules and morphology had dissimilar phylogenetic signals, simultaneous analyses enhanced the overall signal and thus generated the hypothesis with the most explanatory power. Syntropinae and Stahnkeini Soleglad and Fet, 2008 were recovered as monophyletic. The Syntropinae comprised six monophyletic groups that contradicted the current classification. The following taxonomic emendations are proposed. The tribe Paravaejovini Soleglad and Fet, 2008 and subtribe Thorellina Soleglad and Fet, 2008 are synonymized with Syntropinae; the Syntropinae is redefined with eleven genera. Six new genera are described, Balsateres n. gen., Chihuahuanus, n. gen., Konetontli, n. gen., Maaykuyak, n. gen., Mesomexovis, n. gen., and Vizcaino, n. gen. Hoffmannius, syn. n. is synonymized with Paravaejovis and 15 species are transferred to other genera. Five subspecies are elevated to species, two restored from synonymy and 26 new species described. Possible scenarios of the evolution and biogeography of the genera and species are presented, from a historical and ecological perspective.

Book excerpt: A new scorpion species, Vaejovis deboerae, sp. nov., is described and placed in the "mexicanus" group of the genus Vaejovis. They are small light yellowish brown scorpions found in the Santa Catalina Mountains, one of the sky islands of southern Arizona. They are closely related to V. vorhiesi Stahnke. The original description of V. vorhiesi Stahnke, 1940 and redescription (Graham, 2007), state that they are found in the Huachuca and Santa Catalina Mountains of southern Arizona. No specimens from the Santa Catalina Mountains were included in the redescription based on the lack of adequate material. The redescription stated " ... the Santa Catalina Mountains scorpions definitely warrant further study if specimens become available." This description of a new species is based on ample specimens now being available.

Book Phylogeny of the Troglomorphic Scorpion Genus Troglotayosicus Scorpiones Troglotayosicidae

Download or read book Phylogeny of the Troglomorphic Scorpion Genus Troglotayosicus Scorpiones Troglotayosicidae written by Jairo A. Moreno-González and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The troglomorphic scorpion genus Troglotayosicus Lourenço, 1981, occurs in hypogean and epigean habitats in the Andean and Amazonian rainforests of Colombia and Ecuador. The phylogenetic relationships among the species of Troglotayosicus are currently unknown. In the present contribution, a new species, Troglotayosicus akaido, sp. nov., is described from specimens collected in the leaf litter of a primary rainforest in the Colombian Amazon, near the border with Peru, raising the number of species in the genus to seven. The new species represents the easternmost record of the genus and further extends its distribution into the Amazon. Its phylogenetic position was tested in an analysis of all species of the genus and two outgroup taxa, scored for 131 morphological characters (16 new and 115 legacy; 104 binary and 27 multistate) analyzed with maximum likelihood under the MK model. Troglotayosicus was recovered as monophyletic and composed of two main clades. The morphological survey revealed that the ventral macrosetae of the leg telotarsi of the type species, Troglotayosicus vachoni Lourenço, 1981, are simple, subspiniform macrosetae, irregularly distributed, but not arranged into clusters nor forming elongated clusters of setae/spinules, as previously suggested. A distribution map and key to the identification of the species of Troglotayosicus are provided. Further research, incorporating molecular data, is needed to understand the evolution and biogeographical history of this enigmatic scorpion genus.

Book Scorpions of Medical Importance

Download or read book Scorpions of Medical Importance written by Hugh L. Keegan and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is an account of the distribution, morphology, biology and classification of those scorpions considered to be of medical importance. The book also contains information on the clinical aspects of scorpion envenomation, and on methods for scorpion control.Though the scope of this book is clearly delineated by its title, Scorpions of Medical Importance, Professor Keegan does consider those genera and species of scorpions that are not of medical importance, but commonly occur in association with man, and are often greatly feared. He has done so because of the scorpion's potential as a stimulus for entomophobia. While this fear, created in part by folklore, dramatic but inaccurate literature, and television and motion picture sequences, is useful in areas where dangerously venomous scorpions exist, it has also created much needless apprehension. It will surely be a revelation to many readers that of approximately 800 species that have been described, only about 50 have been reported as being dangerous to man.A valuable feature of Scorpions of Medical Importance is the outstanding drawings that have been used to illustrate the species. It is not often that one comes across drawings so striking in their precision and attention to even the most minute details. As one of the very few books dealing solely with the general subject of scorpions of medical importance, this publication should be a useful reference for all of those interested in the distribution, biology, and control of dangerously venomous scorpions, and in clinical aspects of scorpion envenomation. The book also contains an index, bibliography, and pertinent references to related species not discussed in the book.

Book Taxonomic Revision of the Mexicanus Group of the Genus Vaejovis C L Koch 1836 Scorpiones Vaejovidae

This book was released on 2019 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract "Within the scorpion genus Vaejovis C.L. Koch, the “mexicanus” group is composed of species distributed in the mountains of México. This group presents taxonomic problems, because its characterization and the species included in the group have varied through the years. In the present work, we redefine this group based on several morphological characters, and we differentiate it from the other two species groups within the genus: “vorhiesi” and “nit dulus+nigrescens”. Additionally, five new species are described: Vaejovis ceboruco sp. nov., Vaejovis nanchititla sp. nov., Vaejovis santibagnezi sp. nov., Vaejovis talpa sp. nov. and Vaejovis tapalpa sp. nov; the males of three species are described for the first time (V. dugesi, V. nigrofemoratus and V. tesselatus); and the updated diagnosis for all species is included. Keys for the identification of males and females of the 30 species included in. Keywords: group characterization, species diagnoses, new species, dichotomous keys, Myriapoda"--Page 3.
