The data used for this analysis was collected from 2002 to 2006 with the D0 detector, during Run IIa of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. It corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 1 fb−1. With a sample of 499,830 W → e[nu] candidate events, we obtain a mass measurement of M{sub W} = 80.401 ± 0.043 GeV. This is the most precise measurement from a single experiment to date.

Results from analyses of events with W and Z bosons are presented for the run 1B data samples. From W → e[nu], [mu][nu] and Z → ee, [mu][mu] decays, the W and Z production cross sections and the W width are determined. Events with W → [tau][nu] decays are used to determine the ratio of the electroweak gauge coupling constants as a measure of lepton universality. Using W → e[nu] and Z → ee decays, the W boson mass is measured.

We use[ital W][r-arrow][ital e][nu] decays to extract the[ital W] mass from the observed spectrum of transverse mass of the electron ([vert-bar][eta][vert-bar][lt] 1. 2) and the inferred neutrino We use[ital Z][sup 0][r-arrow][ital ee] decays to constrain our model of the detector response. We measure[ital m][sub W]/[ital m][sub Z]= 0.8815[+-] 0.0011([ital stat])[+-] 0.0014([ital syst]) and[ital m][sub W]= 80.38[+-] 0.07 ([ital W stat])[+-] 0.13([ital syst]) GeV. Combining this result with our previous measurement from the 1992-1993 data, we obtain[ital m][sub W]= 80.37[+-] 0.15 GeV (errors combined in quadrature).

The W from the D0 experiment is 80.44 ± 0.12 GeV and the preliminary mass from CDF is 80.43 ± 0.16 GeV. Combining these mass values with the previous Tevatron measurements leads to a M{sub W} 80.41 ± 0.09 GeV. Also, presented is the new measurement of sin2 [Theta]{sub W}{sup on-shell} = 0.2199 ± 0.0020(stat) ± 0.0009(syst) from the deep inelastic neutrino scattering experiment (NuTeV) at Fermilab. In the context of the Standard Model this can be interpreted as a M{sub W} = 80.53 ± 0.11 GeV.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the results of an analysis of the 3.7 {fb}^{-1} of Tevatron proton-antiproton data collected with the DZero (D0) Detector at Fermilab during the ``RunIIb34'' period, with the goal of extracting an improved measurement of the $W$ boson mass, which is currently measured to a precision of approx 20,{MeV}. The measurement is performed on events with one W boson which decays to an electron and a neutrino. Using a template technique, the mass is measured from three distributions that are correlated with the W boson mass: the transverse electron momentum, p_T^e, the transverse W mass, m_T$ and the neutrino momentum, which appears as missing transverse energy, {E}_T. A test measurement using this technique is successfully performed on a mock dataset generated with a Monte Carlo simulation. In the data, we find unexpected azimuthally dependent inconsistencies between the early and late parts of the data taking period. Implications for the completion of the data measurement are discussed.
