Book A New Framework for Assessing Interconnection Charges with the Evolution of Telecommunications Networks

Download or read book A New Framework for Assessing Interconnection Charges with the Evolution of Telecommunications Networks written by Won Seok Yang and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, the telecommunications industry has faced fundamental changes. The competition in the telecom market has intensified according to service diversification due to voice and data integration, broadcasting and telecom convergence, and merger and acquisition of telecom operators. The networks evolve from circuit networks to next generation networks, such as BcN, 3G, 4G, and finally converge to All-IP networks. In addition, the Korean government has also presented new regulation policies in retail, wholesale, and spectrum allocation to promote competition and encourage investment. These trends are affecting Korean regulation policies, including the regulation of interconnection charges. The Korean regulatory agency uses a hybrid framework, that combines the rate of a top-down LRIC model and the slope calculated by the rates of a bottom-up LRIC model to assess interconnection charges. In this paper, we investigate the issues of the current framework for assessing interconnection charges in Korea in light of the rapid changes in the telecom industry. We show that investment in NTS or 3G may result in a decrease in operators' rates. The interconnection rate increases without network investment when traffic decreases. As a result, the current framework is limited in giving telecom operators incentive to increase network investment and use their networks efficiently. In addition, the top-down rate is out of date. The bottom-up model requires numerous, complicated simulations to compute the rates. We analyze the telecom regulation trends in the EU and propose a new framework for calculating the interconnection charge based on a glide-path method, a bottom-up model, and the concept of technology neutrality. The framework is clear and robust against the rapid changes in the telecom industry. In addition, we expect that the new framework can improve network efficiency because it excludes inefficient costs and derives operators' network investment with transparent regulations.

Book Telecommunications Development in Asia

Download or read book Telecommunications Development in Asia written by John URE and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No industry has expanded faster than telecommunications, gained so many new users, added so much value, spread so rapidly to the underdeveloped areas of developing countries, done so much to close the digital divide and provide access to e-learning, e-health, and e-commerce across the countries of the Asia Pacific. Telecommunications Development in Asia provides a completely new and comprehensive analysis of the policies adopted throughout the region that have led to the explosive growth of this sector. It is a sequel to the 1995 landmark publication, John Ure (editor) Telecommunications in Asia: Policy, Planning and Development, and like the earlier volume will become a popular and indispensable guide for professionals, policy-makers and regulators working in telecommunications-related sectors. Part One of this new book is thematic. It reviews global best practices across a range of key issues facing the industry, from regulation, competition policy and the provision of universal service, to interconnection between competing networks, the management of radio spectrum for the all-important wireless communications sector, and an assessment of innovation in the telecommunications equipment market. Part Two examines markets across the Asia Pacific region, exploring the themes of Part One through in-depth country studies. Policy and regulations, industry trends and markets are uniquely placed in their historical, economic and political context. No other publication offers such comprehensive insights and understanding of the dynamic of these markets. And like the 1995 book, this one looks likely to stand the test of time.

Book The Economics of Information Networks

Download or read book The Economics of Information Networks written by Cristiano Antonelli and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1992 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provided in this book is a penetrating analysis of the broad array of the changes that generation, introduction and diffusion of a wave of radical innovations such as new information technologies and advanced telecommunications produce on industrial structures, corporate organization and firms behavior. The major contribution of the book lies in highlighting the role of factors such as technological, pecuniary, adoption, demand and network factors as a general conceptual framework for analysing technological change. Building on this theoretical framework, the book shows how cooperation among firms emerges as the distinctive feature of the new models of industrial organization. Interdependence between firms in fact is more and more shaped by networks of complementarities, localized spillovers and learning opportunities. In the conclusion the policy implications for assessing the evolution of network technologies with special reference to advanced telecommunications are consequently analyzed and developed.

Book Internet Governance and the Global South

Download or read book Internet Governance and the Global South written by A. Bhuiyan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A welcome addition to Palgrave's Global Media Policy and Business series, Internet Governance and the Global South documents the role of the global south in Internet policymaking and challenges the globalization theories that declared the death of the state in global decision-making. Abu Bhuiyan argues that the global Internet politics is primarily a conflict between the states - the United States of America and the states of the global south - because the former controls Internet policymaking. The states of the global south have been both oppositional and acquiescing to the sponsored policies of the United States on Internet issues such as digital divide, multilingualism, intellectual property rights and cyber security. They do not oppose the neoliberal underpinnings of the policies promoted by the United States, but ask for an international framework to govern the Internet so that they can work as equal partners in setting norms for the global Internet.
