Book Commentaries on the First Book of Moses Called Genesis Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Commentaries on the First Book of Moses Called Genesis Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Jean Calvin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentaries on the First Book of Moses Called Genesis, Vol. 1 Several of the commentaries OF calvin on different portions of the Holy Scripture having been for some time before the public, through the labours of the calvin society; it is not improbable that the readers of the follow ing pages will have already become in a great degree familiar with the writings of this celebrated Reformer. It may, perhaps, therefore be thought an unnecessary, if not a presumptuous undertaking, to preface the present work with any general observations on the character of calvin's expository writings. But though the Commentary on genesis was neither the first which Calvin wrote, nor the first which the Calvin Society has republished; yet Since, in the ultimate arrangement of the Commentaries it must take the foremost place, the Editor has determined to offer such preliminary remarks as may seem desirable for a reader who begins to read the Commentaries of Calvin, as he begins to read the Bible itself, at the Book of Genesis. If, in taking such a course, he is charged with repeating some things which have been said by others before him, he will not be extremely anxious either to defend himself from the charge or to meet it with a denial. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Commentary on Genesis, Vol. 2 Two solemn revelations open in ch. Xv. The second section of the life of Abraham. The narrative falls into two halves. It is impossible to regard all from beginning to end as occurring in vision. For (1) if one revelation takes place at night, or at least with a transposition to night, the other is made in the day, and indeed at eventicle, the sun being at ver. 12 about to set, and at ver. 17 actually set. And (2) the account of Abraham's believing reception of the promise of a posterity numeious as the stars of heaven ver. 6 separates what pre ceded from What follows, which though it appears from the 16x mm, 7 a, to have immediately succeeded, has yet its own special introduction. Dillmann here carries analysis even farther beyond the bounds of the discernible than Wellhausen does. The safest criterion from Gen. I. To ex. Vi., and one which must only be relinquished for cogent reasons, is the Divine names. The use of these is in both halves of ch. Xv. The same. In both mm is the prevailing one, and With it occurs once in each rm rm, to be read according to the punctuation d?sn figs, a combination of Divine names Which, thus written, is unusual. This mm ms, here twice used, gives to this historical picture in its two departments, as to the prophetic image, Isa. 1. 4 - 9, where it is four times used. Book The Century Bible a Modern Commentary Vol 1

Download or read book The Century Bible a Modern Commentary Vol 1 written by Walter Frederic Adeney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Century Bible, a Modern Commentary, Vol. 1: Genesis Again, there are many striking illustrations in Genesis of the fact that inspiration constantly leads men on to new truth, and yet at the same time' enables them to retain what was true in their old faith, and thus to acknowledge the continuity of Revelation, and to find a Word of God alike in the earlier and less perfect, and in the more advanced teaching of their sacred literature. Thus the two accounts of the Creation 1 represent two different stages of religious thought. Yet the reverence for the more ancient story did not prevent the Israelites from accepting another symbolic narrative which em bodied more advanced truth; nor did their enthusiastic appreciation of new light lead them to cast aside a Scrip ture hallowed by many sacred memories and associa tions. The two were placed side by side. Our authors have even been careful to preserve edifying fragments of old tradition when the rest of a story had to be discarded, because it shocked spiritual feelings enlightened by the progress of Revelation; as, for instance, in the case of the account2 of the marriage of the sons of God and the daughters of men, which is obviously, incomplete. It is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book The Book of Genesis Vol 1

Download or read book The Book of Genesis Vol 1 written by Robert S. Candlish and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Genesis, Vol. 1: Expounded in a Series of Discourses The view taken in this Lecture I hold to be important, not only in its practical and spiritual bearings, on which I chiefly dwell, but also in relation to some of the scientific questions which have been supposed to be here involved. It lifts, as I think, the divine record out of and above these human entanglements, and presents it, apart from all discoveries of successive ages, in the broad and general aspect which it was designed from the first and all along to wear, as unfolding the Creator's mind in the orderly subordination of the several parts of his creation to one another, with special reference to his intended dealings with the race of man. On this account I ask attention to what otherwise might appear to somo to be an irrelevant metaphysical conceit. It is proposed, then, to inquire what is implied in our really believing, as a matter of revelation, the fact of the creation. This may seem a very needless inquiry, in reference to a fact so easily understood. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." "The worlds were framed by the word of God." Can any thing be easier than to comprehend and believe this great truth thus clearly revealed? Who can be at a loss to know what is meant by believing it? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genesis, Vol. 1 of 2: Critically and Exegetically Expounded The name of August Dillmann (1823-1894)and the value of his work have long been familiar to English students of Old Testament Literature. A translator of his Commentary on Genesis has therefore only to speak of the editions of the original, and of any features of the translation which require remark. The edition (1892) from which the present translation is made is generally quoted as the sixth. It is, however, only the fourth from Dillmann's own hand. His first edition was a revision of a commentary by August Knobel, which had already passed through two editions. What still remains of this original is indicated in the text by quotation marks, with or without mention of Knobel's name. The present translation is in two volumes, for the whole of which the writer of the Preface is finally responsible; but the general form of the first volume and nearly all the additional matter in it (in square brackets) is due to another hand. Various titles have been iven them the Septuagint and the Vulgate they are called the Third and ourth Books of Kings. The authorship of these books is unknown but the prevailing opinion is that they were compiled by Ezra, or one of the later prophets, from the ancient documents that are so frequently referred to in the course Of the history asof public and established authority. Book The Bible What It Is Vol 1

Download or read book The Bible What It Is Vol 1 written by Charles Bradlaugh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible, What It Is, Vol. 1: Genesis, Its Authorship and Authenticity The reader will find frequent references made to Bellamy's New Translation of Genesis. Bellamy was a painstaking, honest man, and good Hebraist, but his desire to free the text of the Bible from the imputation of containing objectionable passages often leads him to strain for an interpretation not warranted by the Hebrew. Kalisch's Commentary - a far superior and much less partial book, is also in constant use in these pages. His volume contains one of the most admirable collections of criticisms on Genesis ever presented to the English reader. It utters far more heresy than Colenso has yet ventured to put forward against Genesis. The author does not profess to reject the Bible as a divinely inspired book, but as he admits that it is irreconcilably contradicted by science, and confesses that in more than one place its own self-opposing statements cannot be explained away, it is evident that Kalisch's views on inspiration are not of a very orthodox order. Colenso's volumes, repeatedly quoted here, are valuable as coming from a Church of England. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliography contains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.
