Every Man in his Humour; after which he produced a play regularly every year for fome years fucceflively: and in 1600 he made his court, in a noble manner, to queen Eliza beth, whom he complimented under the all°go'rical perfonaoc bf the goddefs Cynthia, in his Cynthia's Revels, which was added that year by the children of the queen's chapel [f]. He feems to have been a competitor for the poetic crown at this time lime, in his next piece, The Poetafler, which was reprefented by the fame performers in 1601, he ridicules his rival Decker, under the, character of (frifpinus. He was taxed alfo with particular reflections in it on fome profefl'ors of the law, and fome military men, wh0'were well known at: that time. The popular clamours againfl him upon this occa iion ran very high and to thefe he replied, in Vindication of himfelf, by an apologetical dialogue, which was once (poken upon the fiage, and which he annexed, on the'publication of his works, to the end of this play but Decker was bent upon revenge, and refolved, if poffible, to conquer Jonfon at his own weapons. In this fpirit he ete a'play immediately after, intituled, Satyromaftix, or, The untrufiing the hu mourous Poet; in which Jonfon is introduced under the character of Horace Junior. The enemies of Jonfon indultri cofly gave out, that all he more was produced with extreme labour, and that he was not lefs than a year about every play. This objection, had it been true, was really no difgrace to him the bell: authors know by eitperieiice, that what appears to be the molt natural and eafy writing is frequently the effect of {tudy and the clofeft application. But their defign was to infinuate, that Jonfon had no parts and a poor imagination to which he retorted in the prologue to his f'volpone, or, The Fox and thence we learn, that the whole play finifhed by him in five weeks. Being put to fchool there, he made an uncommon progrefs in the Greek tongue; and at fourteen years of age, was fent to Univerfity-college in Oxford. The year after, he was chofen fellow of Lincoln college; and, proceeding mailer of arts, he took pupils, and went into orders. In 1697, came out his edition of Lycophron in folio: it was reprinted in 1702, and is reckoned the beft of that obfcure writer. The flame year, 1697, he publifhed likewife the firftwolume of his Antiquities of Greece which was followed by the fe cond, the year after. Several additions were made by him in the fubfequent editions of this'ufeful and learned work, of which the feventh edition was publifhed in 1751. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 10 of 15 Loyola (Ignatius Of), the founder of the order of Jesuits, was born in 1491, of a considerable family, at the castle of Loyola, in the province of Guipuscoa in Spain. He was educated in the court of Ferdinand and Isabella, and entered very early into the military profession. He was addicted to all the excesses too common in that line of life, but was at the same time a good officer, and one who sought occasions to distinguish himself. His valour was conspicuous at Pampeluna, in 1521, when it was besieged by the French, and there he had his leg broken by a cannon-mot. During the confinement occasioned by this wound, he formed a resolution of renouncin the world, of travelling to Jerusalem, and dedicating his life to the service of God. He is said to have imbibed his ardour of zeal by reading the legends of the saints; though some have denied that he knew the use of letters. But whether he read, or had these things read to him, he certainly conceived an ardour of religious activity, which has not often been equalled. He had no sooner received his cure than he went to hang up his arms over the altar of the blessed Virgin at Montserrat, to whom he devoted his services on March 24, 1522: for he carried the laws of chivalry to his religious observances. In his way, he disputed with a Moor on the perpetual virginity of the blessed Virgin, in whose cause he was in great danger of destroying his opponent. Having watched all night at Montserrat, sometimes standing, and sometimes kneeling, and having devoted himself most earnestly to her, he set out before day-break, in a pilgrim's habit to Manresa. Here he took his lodging among the poor of the town hospital, and he practised mortifications of every kind for above a year. At the same time, we have not omitted to consider, that if every person who attains a certain rank in the learned or active professions, were admitted to claim a place in such a repository, its extent would become too enormous to be useful. Besides adding the names which were deficient, attention has been employed throughout to improve the style, and correct the prominent errors of the former work. That these various ends might be attained within a moderate time, the proprietors divided the care of the undertaking between three literary men. For the first five volumes one gentleman is entirely responsible; the remaining ten were consigned to two writers, who, for no very important reason, chose to take them alternately. Though the work is apparently extended only by the addition of three volumes, the actual augmentation is much greater; the volumes being not only, in general, thicker than before, but so printed, as to contain in each page four or five lines more, than a page of the preceding edition.
