Book A National System of Education

Download or read book A National System of Education written by John Howard Whitehouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A National System of Education The vital weakness of our educational system is the lack of any proper relation between primary and later forms of education. Elementary education has been regarded as a complete system in itself, capable of turning out its children at ages between 12 and 14 to enter upon the work of life. The code of the Board of Education has attempted a task at once impossible and grotesque, that of laying down a curriculum which would enable the children of the elementary schools to receive their educational equipment for life before reaching an age at which the children of wealthier parents are still in the nursery or the preparatory school. The divorce between our different classes of schools has had far-reaching results. What we have lost can perhaps best be appreciated by a reference to other countries where the whole educational system is a unity, as in parts of the German Empire, or parts of the United States of America. Book Investigating the Influence of Standards

Download or read book Investigating the Influence of Standards written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-12-27 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1989, with the publication of Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for Mathematics by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, standards have been at the forefront of the education reform movement in the United States. The mathematics standards, which were revised in 2000, have been joined by standards in many subjects, including the National Research Council's National Science Education Standards published in 1996 and the Standards for Technical Literacy issued by the International Technology Education Association in 2000. There is no doubt that standards have begun to influence the education system. The question remains, however, what the nature of that influence is and, most importantly, whether standards truly improve student learning. To answer those questions, one must begin to examine the ways in which components of the system have been influenced by the standards. Investigating the Influence of Standards provides a framework to guide the design, conduct, and interpretation of research regarding the influences of nationally promulgated standards in mathematics, science, and technology education on student learning. Researchers and consumers of research such as teachers, teacher educators, and administrators will find the framework useful as they work toward developing an understanding of the influence of standards.

This book was released on 1999-01-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1960s, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)--the nation's report card--has been the only continuing measure of student achievement in key subject areas. Increasingly, educators and policymakers have expected NAEP to serve as a lever for education reform and many other purposes beyond its original role. Grading the Nation's Report Card examines ways NAEP can be strengthened to provide more informative portrayals of student achievement and the school and system factors that influence it. The committee offers specific recommendations and strategies for improving NAEP's effectiveness and utility, including: Linking achievement data to other education indicators. Streamlining data collection and other aspects of its design. Including students with disabilities and English-language learners. Revamping the process by which achievement levels are set. The book explores how to improve NAEP framework documents--which identify knowledge and skills to be assessed--with a clearer eye toward the inferences that will be drawn from the results. What should the nation expect from NAEP? What should NAEP do to meet these expectations? This book provides a blueprint for a new paradigm, important to education policymakers, professors, and students, as well as school administrators and teachers, and education advocates.
