Book excerpt: Benjamin Franklin decries the recent massacre by the self-styled Paxton Boys of peaceful Native Americans belonging to the Conestoga tribe in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and the subsequent murder by mob action against those remaining Indians who had been taken to the county workhouse for protection. By contrast, he recounts examples of the "rite of hospitality" exercised on behalf of their enemies by ancient Greeks in Homer's Ulysses, by Muslim Moors under the Saracens, by native Africans in Guinea, and by Native Americans. Franklin also includes copies of proclamations by Governor John Penn against the outrage. The pamphlet concludes with calls for justice against the perpetrators.

Book The Calling of the Nations

Download or read book The Calling of the Nations written by Mark Vessey and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current notions of nationhood, communal identity, territorial entitlement, and collective destiny are deeply rooted in historic interpretations of the Bible. Interweaving elements of history, theology, literary criticism, and cultural theory, the essays in this volume discuss the ways in which biblical understandings have shaped Western – and particularly European and North American – assumptions about the nature and meaning of the nation. Part of the Green College Lecture Series, this wide-ranging collection moves from the earliest Pauline and Rabbinic exegesis through Christian imperial and missionary narratives of the late Roman, medieval, and early modern periods to the entangled identity politics of 'mainstream' nineteenth-and twentieth-century North America. Taken together, the essays show that, while theories of globalization, postmodernism, and postcolonialism have all offered critiques of identity politics and the nation-state, the global present remains heavily informed by biblical-historical intuitions of nationhood.

Book excerpt: Known for his influential role in the debates that established the founding documents of the United States, Benjamin Franklin was not only an astute politician, but also an Atlantic citizen whose commitment to the American cause was informed by years spent in England and France. The life of this iconic founder provides an ideal opportunity for students to take a closer look at eighteenth century colonial society and the contested formation of the early American nation. In this carefully contextualized account, Nathan R. Kozuskanich considers the many facets of Franklin’s private and public lives, and shows how Franklin grappled with issues that still concern us today: the right to bear arms, the legacy of slavery, and the nature of American democracy. In a concise narrative bolstered by supporting primary documents, Benjamin Franklin: American Founder, Atlantic Citizen introduces students to the world of the burgeoning United States and enables them to understand the journey from imperial colonies to an independent nation dedicated to the premise that all men are created equal.
