Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative History of the Harding Family: With Illustrations This narrative was commenced in 1899, out of love for and in the interest Of the little cousins, Allan Cope Harding and Barstow Harding Miller, so that wherever the word your appears it refers to them. As Often happens in writing such little histories, this has become more extensive than originally intended, until it includes each and every member Of our American line. In the book of Royal Descent compiled by Miss T. E. Sharpe Of England, the descent is brought down to the American branch, and the Object of this book is to continue that descent in a narrative form; to relate any interesting incidents of people or history Of places mentioned in the former book, thus bringing those characters Of bygone centuries into closer relationship with the present genera tion; and to give a little explanation and description of the ancestral pictures included in the illustrations Of this book. Mama is sick and Harriet and I have the ague; you must excuse the writing for my side is so painful I can write but little at a time, these are western complaints. Miss Eyre is going to write Mr. George Harding and will give you all the circumstances of the death of Octavia as they say I have not given it fully, but I cannot make long stories and she is first rate at it. I like to write long letters but it seems as tho' we had nothing in common. I do not know if my pursuits and thoughts of matters and things will interest you, brought up so differently from what we have been. I, to use a favorite mode of speaking of Miss Eyre's, knocked from pillar to post and you sheltered from every storm, but two qualities my training has given me, energy and decision. I am sorry that I ever left York State as I do not like the West. I believe you are under the impression I am either married or going to be. I can assure you it is a mistake. Book The Brainy Bunch

Download or read book The Brainy Bunch written by Kip Harding and published by Gallery Books. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A straightforward, practical guide that takes an anyone-can-do-this approach” (Kirkus Reviews), The Brainy Bunch outlines the Harding family’s well-rounded method for producing college-ready kids by age twelve. Having six out of ten kids go to college is no small feat on its own, but having six kids in college before their teens—that’s nothing short of incredible. “Never judgmental and not without humor,” this “fascinating read” (Library Journal) is Kip and Mona Lisa Harding’s story of producing exactly those extraordinary results. Kip and Mona Lisa are parents to an engineer (who earned her BS in mathematics at seventeen), an architect (who became the youngest member of the American Institute of Architects), a Navy physician (who earned her biology degree at seventeen), an entrepreneur (who earned an MS in computer science at seventeen), a sixteen-year-old college senior studying music theory and performance, a thirteen-year-old Middle Ages scholar with the highest average in his college class, and four others who are following fast in their siblings’ footsteps! No wonder the family is so used to being asked: How did you do it? In an “impressive” (Publishers Weekly), down-to-earth narrative, Kip and Mona Lisa reveal with warmth and humility the strategies behind their family’s amazing educational accomplishments. Filled with daily regimens, advice for providing children with fulfilling experiences that go beyond the home, and tips for making the transition to college, theirs is an inspirational real-life success story that anyone can achieve—whether you homeschool your children or not. Featured on the Today show and FOX, The Brainy Bunch is uplifting and ultimately relatable proof of what any family can accomplish through dedication, love, faith, and hard work.

Book The House by the Lake The True Story of a House Its History and the Four Families Who Made It Home

Download or read book The House by the Lake The True Story of a House Its History and the Four Families Who Made It Home written by Thomas Harding and published by Candlewick Studio. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History comes home in a deeply moving, exquisitely illustrated tale of a small house, taken by the Nazis, that harbors a succession of families—and becomes a quiet witness to a tumultuous century. The days went around like a wheel. The sun rose, warming the walls of the house. On the outskirts of Berlin, Germany, a wooden cottage stands on the shore of a lake. Over the course of a hundred years, this little house played host to a kind Jewish doctor and his family, a successful Nazi composer, wartime refugees, and a secret-police informant. During that time, as a world war came and went and the Berlin Wall arose just a stone’s throw from the back door, the house filled up with myriad everyday moments. And when that time was over, and the dwelling was empty and derelict, the great-grandson of the man who built the house felt compelled to bring it back to life and listen to the story it had to tell. Illuminated by Britta Teckentrup’s magnificent illustrations, Thomas Harding’s narration reads like a haunting fairy tale—a lyrical picture-book rendering of the story he first shared in an acclaimed personal history for adult readers.

Book The House by the Lake

Download or read book The House by the Lake written by Thomas Harding and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the summer of 1993, Thomas Harding traveled to Germany with his grandmother to visit a small house by a lake on the outskirts of Berlin. It had been a holiday home for her and her family, but in the 1930s, she had been forced to flee to England as the Nazis swept to power. Nearly twenty years later, the house was government property and soon to be demolished. It was Harding's legacy, one that had been loved, abandoned, fought over -- a house his grandmother had desired until her death. Could it be saved? And should it? As Harding began to make inquiries, he unearthed secrets that had lain hidden for decades about the lives of the five families who had lived there: a wealthy landowner, a prosperous Jewish family, a renowned composer, a widow and her children, and a Stasi informant. All had made the house their home, and all -- bar one -- had been forced out. The house had been the site of domestic bliss and of contentment, but also of terrible grief and tragedy. It had weathered storms, fires and abandonment; witnessed murders, had withstood the trauma of a world war, and the dividing of a nation. As the story of the house began to take shape, Harding realized that there was a chance to save it, but in doing so, he would have to resolve his own family's feelings towards their former homeland -- and a hatred handed down through the generations. -- For readers of Edmund de Waal, Daniel Mendelson, and David Laski" -- Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: When Thomas Harding discovered that his family had profited from slavery, he set out to interrogate the choices of his ancestors and Britain's role in this terrible history. His investigation took him to Demerara (now Guyana), the site of an uprising by enslaved people in 1823, the largest in the British Empire and a key trigger in the abolition of slavery. Charting the dramatic build-up to this landmark event through the eyes of four people - an enslaved man, a missionary, a colonist, and a slaveholder - Harding lays bare the true impact of years of unimaginable cruelty and incredible courage and asks how those who benefitted from slavery can take responsibility for the White Debt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER The “compelling,” untold story of the man who captured and brought to trial Rudolf Höss—one of Nazi Germany’s most notorious war criminals and subject of the Oscar-nominated film The Zone of Interest—“fascinates and shocks” (The Washington Post). May 1945. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the first British War Crimes Investigation Team is assembled to hunt down the senior Nazi officials responsible for the greatest atrocities the world has ever seen. One of the lead investigators is Lieutenant Hanns Alexander, a German Jew who is now serving in the British Army. Rudolf Höss is his most elusive target. As Kommandant of Auschwitz, Höss not only oversaw the murder of more than one million men, women, and children; he was the man who perfected Hitler’s program of mass extermination. Höss is on the run across a continent in ruins, the one man whose testimony can ensure justice at Nuremberg. Hanns and Rudolf reveals for the very first time the full, exhilarating account of Höss’s capture, an encounter with repercussions that echo to this day. Moving from the Middle Eastern campaigns of World War I to bohemian Berlin in the 1920s to the horror of the concentration camps and the trials in Belsen and Nuremberg, it tells the story of two German men—one Jewish, one Catholic—whose lives diverged, and intersected, in an astonishing way. This is “one of those true stories that illuminates a small justice in the aftermath of the Holocaust, an event so huge and heinous that there can be no ultimate justice” (New York Daily News).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrea Harding is a recent college graduate looking forward to attending Duke Law School when her world is turned upside down by the shooting of her father, Nicholas, and uncle, Michael, in a surprising and puzzling attack. They are the only family she has, aside from her paternal grandmother Dorothy, so when her uncle dies from the attack and her father lays comatose in ICU, it falls to Andrea to not only investigate who would want to kill her father and uncle, but also to oversee Harding Industries, the family company. When her father's longtime attorney and one of a handful of family friends, Beth Cowling, rushes to help Andrea long distance, the youngest Harding soon finds herself surrounded by a bevy of intriguing new friends and helpers. First to arrive is Beth's own daughter, Riva, acting as Andrea's attorney after Andrea is violently attacked in her father's home, where she grew up, forcing her to kill both would-be assassins. When Nicholas's on again/off again lover, state prosecutor and gubernatorial hopeful Kerry Marcus, is equally at a loss to name suspects in the Harding family attacks, Riva begins her own investigation into the short list of family friends and colleagues, including Don Marshall, former colleague of Nicholas's at Marshall Pharmaceutical, which Don now runs, and Don's wife Karen. Marshall has a shady past, including an incident at his company that also involved Andrea's father. She also looks closely at Marcus Ricci, father of Andrea's closest high school friend, Jason. After Jason's death from leukemia, Ricci becomes like a second father to Andrea. Ricci is also widely believed to have ties to the New Jersey mob. But Beth has another contact she wants involved in the investigation, Deirdre Southington, daughter of Beth's old friend Cordelia Southington. The Southington family has more money than God, as well as, through Deirdre, more contacts in the intriguing world of international espionage. A former NSA agent, Deirdre is mysterious and beautiful in a cold way. An eccentric who travels via private rail car, she is also extraordinarily persuasive, holding a PhD in forensic psychology that she has put to great use in both her work with the NSA and on her own, as a defender of good, rooting out evil doers and ensuring they are brought to her own brand of justice. Andrea, Riva, and Deirdre all also cast a suspicious eye on the Oakes brothers, Carlton and Jefferson, who run Oakes Industries along with their silent partner and cousin, New Jersey state senator Schuyler Colfax, who also has his eye on the governor's seat. Oakes Industries has recently made an attempt to purchase Harding Industries, a seemingly irrational move that is rebuffed by Nicholas. What no one knows until much later is that the Oakes brothers have entered into a business deal with Russian mobster Viktor Roman, who represents the real party interested in acquiring Harding Industries, a Vor, Russian organized crime unit, with heavy international interests in the energy sector. Andrea matures quickly as she rapidly learns who she can and cannot trust during her search for the people out to kill her family. Along with her new friends and advocates, she discovers Harding Industries holds a soon to expire option to buy property that could become the source of untold billions from oil reserves, and moves in the nick of time to exercise their right to purchase. But the biggest blow for the Harding family is yet to come--the discovery that Viktor Roman has promised Kerry Marcus the governor's seat in exchange for information about the Hardings, including Nicholas and Michael's whereabouts on the night they are shot. Ultimately, Andrea chooses to forego law school and becomes her father's new partner in Harding Industries, no doubt with many adventures yet to come. Masterfully told using a smattering of historical facts along with a soundtrack of classical music masterpieces, this thriller keeps readers on edge until the very end.
