Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Tributes: A Compend of Funeral Addresses; An Aid for Pastors; A Book of Comfort for the Bereaved There are few more delicate tasks falling to the lot of a minister than the conducting of what are known as funeral services. It does not meet the difficulty to have provided for him a form employed over all, without exception - the best proof of which is that where such a form is in fixed use, occasions are constantly arising in which the clergyman is constrained, by his own sense of the fitness of things, to add words of his own. He thus runs the risk of making invidious distinctions, while the uniform employment of the same language, if it be fit in the case of a decided Christian, is stronger than the Christian consciousness recognizes as fit where no profession of faith has been made. Among the ways in which the minister can prepare himself to discharge this duty is by the prayerful use of such helps as are within reach. It does not meet the difficulty to have provided for him a form employed over all, without exception-the best proof of which is that where such a form is in fixed use, occasions arc constantly arising in which the clergyman is constrained, by his own sense of the fitness of things, to add words of his own. Among the ways in which the minister can prepare himself to discharge this duty is by the prayerful use of such helps as are within reach. Foremost among these is the word of God, next in place will be the suggestive examples set by men, in whom, notwithstanding the imperfections of our common nature, good sense and knowledge of human nature have been elevated and consecrated by grace. There are many ministers, who, like the present writer, have been censured for statements made over the dead when they carefully guarded their testimony and avowedly confined it to the record of their own intercourse with the deceased; and some, who have had -hearers- take their departure because enough was not said in eulogy of their buried kindred. Such things must probably be expected in the complications of a society, partly Christianized, and largely influenced by conventional usage. A true minister can only try to maintain in himself a conscience void of offence, and at the same time avoid the giving of just offence to others....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of us, one of the most rewarding, yet difficult tasks, is preparing messages to preach and teach. We are honored by God to stand before our congregation each week, and we want to give them the very best, but with the press of the many demands of ministry, sometimes that is difficult to do. And if you're like me, you prefer writing your own sermons because you have a special connection with your congregation that is hard to reach through a message someone else has written. In other words, no one knows your people like you do! Our new Pulpit Outline Series gives you a starting point - a sermon title, a deductive sermon outline; and a relevant illustration you can use however you like. In this edition, rather than an outline, we have given you full manuscript messages that can be edited to suit your purposes. We invite you to make these messages your own, because only you know the people God has called you to preach to. And we are so honored that you've invested in this unique third volume in the Pulpit Outline series - 52 Funeral Sermons. We have put together the most tasteful, relevant, and Biblical messages possible. May God Bless You as You Share His Word!

In Beyond Absence, he has collected powerful and inspiring writings, both religious and secular, from across the ages and around the world, to help anyone struggling with life's final transition. This extensive volume contains selections from the famous to the obscure and some works are previously uncollected. Contributors as varied as Thich Nhat Hahn, Thomas Wolfe, Vincent Van Gogh and Rabindranath Tagore explore many themes associated with death and dying including death as peace and rest, conflicted feelings about the dead, loss as transformation, healing and letting go, compassion for the bereaved, the joy of remembrance, and celebrating and honoring the dead. Perfect for composing eulogies and readings for memorials and funerals, Beyond Absence is also the ideal resource for creating sympathy and condolence cards, offering comfort to the bereaved, and engaging in personal reflection during mourning and recovery.

Book The Joy of the Gospel

Download or read book The Joy of the Gospel written by Pope Francis and published by Image. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage
