Book excerpt: Eddie's trying to head south but Mike just keeps driving him north. He's now cornered in Coldwater, Alaska with no girl, no money and nowhere to go. Things are looking bad until he gets to talking with Pete Tall Mountain, who tells him how his father's priceless soapstone carving has been stolen. Eddie reckons that if it's been stolen once then it can be stolen again. The problem is, it's been stolen by Jim Savage and Savage owns the town. Stealing from him is a risky proposition and, if he's going to get away with it, it's going to have to be a better plan than a simple smash and grab. Then Eddie has an idea. It might not be great idea but Mike is closing in fast and time is running out. Could this be Eddie's last roll of the dice? A Million Miles from Mexico is the sequel to Lucky Eddie and the fourth instalment of the Adventures of Eddie Allcorn from the writer of One to the Heart, One to the Head and Grab it by the Throat Kid.

This is an important book on a previously undocumented area of musical theatre."" -- Peter Pinne, Stage Whispers ""There's never been a better book for the armchair-traveler-theatergoer."" -- Peter Filichia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the publication of his wildly successful memoir, Blue Like Jazz, Donald Miller's life began to stall. During what should have been the height of his success, he found himself avoiding responsibility and even questioning the meaning of life. But when two producers proposed turning his memoir into a movie, Miller found himself launched into a new story filled with risk, possibility, beauty, and meaning. A Million Miles in a Thousand Years chronicles Miller's rare opportunity to edit his life into a great story and to reinvent himself so nobody shrugs their shoulders when the credits roll. When his producers begin fictionalizing Don's life for the film--changing a meandering memoir into a structured narrative--the real-life Don starts a journey to make his actual life into a better story. In this book, we have a front-row seat to Miller's journey--from sleeping all day to riding his bike across America, from living in romantic daydreams to facing love head-on, from wasting his money to founding a life-changing nonprofit. Guided by a host of outlandish but very real characters, Miller teaches us: Why God hasn't fixed us yet The power of speaking something into nothing The redemptive beauty that can come from tragic circumstances How to get a second chance at life the first time around Through heart-wrenching honesty and hilarious self-inspection, Miller takes readers through the life that emerges when it turns from boring reality into a meaningful narrative.

Book A Million Miles Ago the Journey Continues

Download or read book A Million Miles Ago the Journey Continues written by Mae Black Buckel and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-08-04 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suicide is at the top of the list for death among teenagers. Wedding vows are no longer sacred, while divorce is rampant. Thousands become addicted to prescription drugs while counselors search for new ways to help their patients cope with the cares of life. You may be one of these and maybe you feel you cannot go on; your heart breaks from the loss of a child; all you have left are memories and a question, Why? Maybe you feel ashamed and degraded because of rape or sexual abuse; you carry the burden of shame and confusion until it weighs you down. Maybe you have been through a divorce; you feel like a failure or a reject; you turned to drugs or alcohol or some other substance, just to get through the disappointments life has dealt you. Yet you find that nothing works and you want to swallow the whole bottle of pills the doctor gave you, so you wont have to wake up to another sad day. Maybe you are in a jail or prison, locked away from society for making bad choices. You have broken the rules and it is payday, but the cost is too high and you do not know how you will ever pay it. You may be a battered wife, with little children at your feet and you cannot find a way out. You may be a drug addict, with a need you cannot fill or an alcoholic with a thirst you cannot quench. You were told you will always be an addict and now you feel helpless. I too have been in most of these places in my life. I share my story in hopes that I may help someone else find peace in the midst of his or her own personal storm.

Book William F Buckley Sr

Download or read book William F Buckley Sr written by John A. Adams and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2023-03-23 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1909, young William F. Buckley Sr. (1881–1958), who grew up in the dusty South Texas town of San Diego, graduated from the University of Texas law school and headed for Mexico City. Fluent in Spanish, familiar with Mexican traditions, and soon fit to practice law south of the border, Buckley was headed up the aisle to vast wealth and cultural power. On the way, he took a front-row seat at the Mexican Revolution and played a key role in steering the nascent oil industry through tumultuous and dangerous times. This book for the first time tells the story of the man behind the family that would become nothing short of a conservative institution, reaching its apogee in the career of William F. Buckley Jr., arguably the most prominent conservative commentator of the twentieth century. Buckley witnessed the overthrow and exit of President Porfirio Díaz, the rise of Madero, and the coup of General Victoriano Huerta, all while building the Pantepec Oil Company, the most profitable small petroleum producer in Mexico. He faced down Pancho Villa, survived encounters with hired assassins, evaded snipers in the streets of Veracruz, gambled and won in many a business venture—and ultimately was expelled from the country. As the narrative follows Buckley from his small-town Texas beginnings to the founding of a family dynasty, the streak of independence and distrust of government that would become the Buckley hallmark can be seen in the making. An eventful chapter in the life and career of a singular character, this dramatic account of a man and his moment is a document of political and historical significance—but it is also a remarkable story, told with irresistible brio.

Book excerpt: "What I'm beginning to discover now is something beyond the novel and beyond the arbitrary confines of the story. . . . I'm making myself seek to find the wild form, that can grow with my wild heart . . . because now I know MY HEART DOES GROW." —Jack Kerouac, in a letter to John Clellon Holmes An underground legend by the time it was finally published in 1972, Visions of Cody captures the members of the Beat Generation in the years before any label had been affixed to them, with Kerouac's trademark appreciation for the ecstatic and ephemeral moments of life An experimental novel which remained unpublished for years, Visions of Cody is Kerouac's fascinating examination of his own New York life, in a collection of colourful stream-of-consciousness essays. Transcribing taped conversations between members of their group as they took drugs and drank, this book reveals an intimate portrait of people caught up in destructive relationships with substances, and one another. Always transfixed by Neal Cassady—the Cody of the title, renamed for the book along with Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs—Kerouac also explores the feelings he had for a man who would inspire much of his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2022 Alfred B. Thomas Book Award, Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies (SECOLAS) 2022 Bolton-Johnson Prize, Conference on Latin American History (CLAH) 2022 Best Book in Non-North American Urban History, Urban History Association (Co-winner) 2023 Honorable Mention, Best Book in the Humanities, Latin American Studies Association Mexico Section Many visitors to Mexico City’s 1886 Electricity Exposition were amazed by their experience of the event, which included magnetic devices, electronic printers, and a banquet of light. It was both technological spectacle and political messaging, for speeches at the event lauded President Porfirio Díaz and bound such progress to his vision of a modern order. Diana J. Montaño explores the role of electricity in Mexico’s economic and political evolution, as the coal-deficient country pioneered large-scale hydroelectricity and sought to face the world as a scientifically enlightened “empire of peace.” She is especially concerned with electrification at the social level. Ordinary electricity users were also agents and sites of change. Montaño documents inventions and adaptations that served local needs while fostering new ideas of time and space, body and self, the national and the foreign. Electricity also colored issues of gender, race, and class in ways specific to Mexico. Complicating historical discourses in which Latin Americans merely use technologies developed elsewhere, Electrifying Mexico emphasizes a particular national culture of scientific progress and its contributions to a uniquely Mexican modernist political subjectivity.
