Book A Midsummer Night s Dream Or The Night They Missed the Forest for the Trees

Download or read book A Midsummer Night s Dream Or The Night They Missed the Forest for the Trees written by and published by Dramatic Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We're in study hall where just about everyone is doing everything except studying for tomorrow's test on A Midsummer Night's Dream. That is, until Jessie gets an idea. In this rollicking adaptation of Shakespeare's play (wherein is examined the adolescent urges of just about everybody), teenagers, fairies, workers and royalty collide in a forest on a summer night and are bedazzled by a prankster. The fairy queen falls in love with an ass, the teens fall in and out (and in) love with each other, six well-meaning goofs stumble into their 15 minutes of fame, fairies weave magic to bring it all to a happy end as only Shakespeare can conjure the tapestry, and three streetwise storytellers pull the audience at breakneck speed toward the moon-drenched conclusion." -- Publisher's website

Book A Thickness of Particulars

Download or read book A Thickness of Particulars written by Jonathan F. S. Post and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Thickness of Particulars: The Poetry of Anthony Hecht is the first book-length study of one of the great formal poets of the later twentieth century (1923-2004). Making use of Hecht's correspondence, which the author edited, it situates Hecht's writings in the context of pre- and post-World-War II verse, including poetry written by W. H. Auden, Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, James Merrill, and Richard Wilbur. In nine chapters, the book ranges over Hecht's full career, with special emphasis placed on the effects of the war on his memory; Hecht participated in the final push by the Allied troops in Europe and was involved in the liberation of the Flossenburg Concentration Camp. The study explores the important place Venice and Italy occupied in his imagination as well as the significance of the visual and dramatic arts and music more generally. Chapters are devoted to analyzing celebrated individual poems, such as "The Book of Yolek" and "The Venetian Vespers"; the making of particular volumes, as in the case of the Pulitzer-Prize-winning "The Hard Hours"; the poet's mid-career turn toward writing dramatic monologues and longer narrative poems ("Green, An Epistle," "The Grapes," and "See Naples and Die") and ekphrases; the inspiring use he made of Shakespeare, especially in "A Love for Four Voices," his delightful riff on "A Midsummer Night's Dream"; and his collaboration with the artist Leonard Baskin in the "Presumptions of Death" series from "Flight Among the Tombs." The book seeks to unfold the itinerary of a highly civilized mind brooding, with wit, over the dark landscape of the later twentieth century in poems of unrivalled beauty.

Download or read book A Midsummer Night s Dream written by Jay L. Halio and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After an historical survey of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" from Shakespeare's time through to the 19th century, Jay Halio focuses primarily on 20th century productions and adaptations, for film and television as well as for the stage. Chapters are devoted to productions by Max Reinhardt, Peter Hall, Robert Lepage, and especially to Peter Brook's landmark production in 1970 and the reactions to it. Using a wealth of personal experience, as well as original promptbooks and critical reviews, Halio shows how differently but still very effectively the play may be staged, as the wide variety of plays he records. This second, enlarged edition contains three new chapters on Adrian Noble's RSC production and film, Michael Hoffman's film, and the "Dream "in China. Written in clear, jargon-free language, this is the only book so far in print that offers an extended study of major 20th-century productions of the "Dream "in their historical context.

Book excerpt: A modern retelling of A Midsummer Night's Dream, this story of a 15-year-old American girl's experience studying abroad in the Irish countryside borrows elements from Irish folklore and escapist-fantasy fiction. Adjustment to life with an Irish family is hard at first, but she forges a bond with her new school friends when, late one night, they slip out into the surrounding woods and revel with fairy-like creatures at a magical wedding party. Real settings in Ireland provide the backdrop for the story, and the Shakespearean storyline serves well to depict an adolescent's breakthrough from outsider status to membership in an enchanted society.
