Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a microscopic model of human speech recognition (HSR), microscopic in a sense that first, the recognition of single phonemes rather than the recognition of whole sentences is modeled. Second, the particular spectro-temporal structure of speech is processed by an auditory model. This contrasts with other models of HSR, which usually use the spectral structure only. The model is capable of predicting phoneme recognition in normal-hearing (NH) listeners in noise along with important aspects of consonant recognition in quiet. Furthermore, this model is extended for the prediction of sentence recognition. The extension is capable of predicting speech recognition of NH and hearing-impaired (HI) listeners as accurately as a standard speech intelligibility model. Parameters reflecting the supra-threshold auditory processing are assessed in NH and HI listeners using psychoacoustical techniques such as forward masking and categorical loudness scaling. These supra-threshold auditory processing deficits are included in the model and the results show that implementing supra-threshold processing improves prediction accuracy. engl.

Every paper in this symposium includes two of the following: auditory physiology, psychoph- ics or modeling. The topics range from cochlear physiology to auditory attention and learning. While the symposium is always hosted by European countries, p- ticipants come from all over the world and are among the leaders in their fields. The result is an outstanding symposium, which has been described by some as a “world summit of auditory research. ” The current volume has a bottom-up structure from “simpler” physiological to more “complex” perceptual phenomena and follows the order of presentations at the meeting. Parts I to III are dedicated to information processing in the peripheral au- tory system and its implications for auditory masking, spectral processing, and c- ing. Part IV focuses on the physiological bases of pitch and timbre perception. Part V is dedicated to binaural hearing. Parts VI and VII cover recent advances in und- standing speech processing and perception and auditory scene analysis. However, auditory processing ability is frequently compromised due to congenital or acquired hearing loss, or altered through background noise or assistive devices such as cochlear implants. How does loss of sensory fidelity impact neural processing, efficiency, and health? How does this ultimately influence behavior? This Research Topic explores the neural consequences of hearing loss, including basic processing carried out in the auditory periphery, computations in subcortical nuclei and primary auditory cortex, and higher-level cognitive processes such as those involved in human speech perception. By pulling together data from a variety of disciplines and perspectives, we gain a more complete picture of the acute and chronic consequences of hearing loss for neural functioning.
