Book Manual of Topographic Methods Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Topographic Methods Classic Reprint written by Henry Gannett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Topographic Methods The object of this manual is a description of the topographic work, instruments, and methods of the United States Geological Survey, primarily for the information of the men engaged in this work. It is not intended to be an elementary treatise on surveying, as it pre supposes a knowledge of the application of mathematics to surveying equivalent to that obtained in our professional schools. Neither is it intended to be a general treatise on topographic work, altho it may, to a certain extent, supply the need of such a work. Surveys are made for two widely different purposes. One consists in laying down upon the ground certain geometric figures, such as a town plat or the alignment of a railroad or an aqueduct. The other purpose is the making of maps, or miniature representations of the country. While the instruments and operations are to some extent the same in both, the purpose and the results are very different. Most books on surveying have in view mainly, if not entirely, the first of these two purposes, operations incident to the making of maps being more or less slighted. Herein the author will attempt to describe the most approved methods of surveying as applied to the production of topographic maps, whether on large or small scales and whether of a high or a low degree of accuracy, including rough reconnaissance as well as accurate and detailed surveys. Book Manual of Topography and Text Book of Topographical Drawing

Download or read book Manual of Topography and Text Book of Topographical Drawing written by J. Enthoffer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Topography, and Text-Book of Topographical Drawing: For the Use of Officers of the Army and Navy, Civil Engineers, Academies, Colleges, and Schools of Science He is indebted to many of his friends for kind suggestions, and thinks it proper to add some remarks by Mr. Noel Hope, who revised the work, on translating in general: Lamartine has somewhere said that, of all literary work, a translation is the toughest. The dictum is correct, for, not only must the translator have the idioms and genius of two languages at command, but, in order to insure perfection, he must be conversant with the subject under consideration. It is utterly impossible to avoid, in toto, giving a foreign aspect to the phraseology Of a rendering from the German, nu less a freedom be adopted which, in works relating to certain special sciences, is not permissible. Any one curious enough to compare the superabundance of words the German language luxuriates in, with the paucity of any other in this regard, need but to try his hand at a translation where science is concerned, to be convinced at once that the Teuton tongue is a grand old oak, the mere Off shoots Of which have become cognate dialects; and that, de spite whatever beauties may be claimed for them, they are, nevertheless, one and all, vastly inferior to the parent stem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Photo-Topographic Methods and Instruments: Topography Topography is that branch Of surveying which pictures the shape of the outer visible surface of the earth, in reduced scale, as a horizontal projection, yet showing the relative positions of points of the terrene also in the vertical sense. It is, therefore, supplementary to geodesy in representing areas of the earth's surface, including all the necessary details and changes in the terrene, by means of instrumental measurements made in the field. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Topographical Drawing The following pages have been prepared to meet, and in some degree to supply, the demand for practical instruction in Topographical Drawing. The great activity which prevails in regard to Internal Improvements, is constantly calling into the field numbers of young Engineers; and already many instructive works have been addressed to them on almost every detail connected with their profession, except map-making. The design of this little manual is, to be a practical assistant and office com panion, to be consulted on all matters connected with Topographical Drawing, from the first sketch of a preliminary survey, to the complete map. Its scope is limited to field and office drawing, and nothing else is treated of, but What relates to, or is illustrative of, those departments of Topography. Book Topographic Surveying

Download or read book Topographic Surveying written by Herbert Michael Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Topographic Surveying: Including Geographic, Exploratory, and Military Mapping, With Hints on Camping, Emergency Surgery, and Photography This book has been prepared with a view of bringing together in one volume the data essential to a comprehensive knowledge of topographic surveying. It has been my aim to cover the varied phases of all classes of surveys which are made with a view to representing on maps information rela tive to the features of the earth's surface. The methods elaborated are chiefly those which have been developed in recent years by the great government surveying organiza tions and by such few private corporations as have kept in touch with the most modern practice; but I have endeavored to go beyond these, and, guided by personal experience, to adapt them to'the most detailed topographic as well as to the crudest exploratory surveys. The hope is entertained, therefore, that the engineer who may be called upon to con duct an exploratory survey in an unknown region, or to make a detailed topographic map as a preliminary to construction, will find herein descriptions and examples of the methods he should employ, the essential tables for the computation of his results, and hints which will guide in the equipment of his party. Book Topographical Surveying and Sketching Classic Reprint

Download or read book Topographical Surveying and Sketching Classic Reprint written by Thomas H. Rees and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Topographical Surveying and Sketching This text book was, for the most part, originally prepared in the form of lectures and pamphlets for the instruction of student officers of the U. S. Army Service Schools at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and it has had the test of several years of use criticism and correction by a most intelligent body Of instructors and students. In Surveying no departure from the regular and recog nized methods has been attempted. Indeed, at this time, it would be difficult to add anything new or original to the many excellent text books on this subject. Attention is invited, however, to the treatment herein presented Of the adjustments of instruments, particularly with reference to the level tube to the marking Of the stadia rod which automatically applies the correction for the constant of the instrument; to the methods of applying latitudes and departures in reducing and plotting a survey and in computing areas; and to the methods of resection with the plane table.
