But the book passed to a wider use than had been antici pated, gaming some circulation among persons who had no other poverty save poverty of spirit. Notwithstanding this, it may still be regarded as intended for christ's Poor; since it is not merely those who are poor in this world's goods, but those who are poor in spirit, that the Lord ao counts to be blessed, and thus marks for, His own. The new edition differs from preceding ones in this respect: that some matter which was in the first edition, and which was omitted in the second and third, is now re placed. The Compiler was led to attempt this work by the need which he felt would be met by it in his own parish. He thinks many of the Reverend Clergy, with himself, desire a manual of devotion which they may offer to their flocks, which shall be at once comprehensive of all the essential teaching of the Catholic Church, and yet not too large and expensive, too profuse and elaborate. The difficulty of making such a book none can know except by actual experience, for the very wealth of devotional material in the Church increases the perplexity and labor of selection. Though conscious of the defects of the Manual he has prepared, he trusts that it may at least lead on to something better, and he humbly prays Almighty God to accept and bless it and make it instrumental to the good of souls.
