Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Classical Manual: An Epitome of Ancient Geography, Greek and Roman Mythology, Antiquities, and Chronology; Chiefly Intended for the Use of Schools Many excellent works have recently issued from the press, which, either separately or in the form of diction aries, treat of the subjects of the following pages: and yet the want of an Epitome has. Been recognized, which would contain, in the compass of a single volume, of small size and moderate price, as much information upon such points as is calculated to elucidate the Greek and Roman authors usually read in the junior forms of our schools. It has been the object of the compiler of the present manual to supply this deficiency by introducing into it such details as are most likely to be useful (indeed much of which is absolutely necessary to the classical student) in so small a space as to admit of its being thoroughly mastered and retained. Although at first the requiaements Of junior forms were chiefly contemplated, yet in the progress of the work so much additional matter has been supplied as, it is hoped, will render it not unacceptable to more advanced students. Book A Manual of Greek Antiquities

Download or read book A Manual of Greek Antiquities written by Percy Gardner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Greek Antiquities The present work is an attempt to compress into a single volume, for the use of students, an introduction to all the main branches of Hellenic antiquities - social, religious, and political. Hitherto, in England, such information as is here supplied has appeared only in the form of dictionaries. For many purposes the alphabetic arrangement under subjects is best, but a more logical and systematic arrangement has also its advantages. In Germany several monumental works have appeared in which Greek antiquities have been systematically treated, such as the Handbooks of Karl Fr. Hermann and Iwan von Müller. Writing on a far smaller scale, we make no attempt to rival these great works in fulness or detail; but we do endeavour to present to the English reader the elements of the subject in a more readable form. The share in the work taken by each of the two contributors is stated on the title-page. Each writer is wholly responsible for the part which he has contributed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities, Vol. 1 of 2 Accordingly, it has been found necessary to rewrite a great part, and remodel the remainder, of the articles in the present Edition, which may therefore be regarded, to a great extent, as a new work. It contains eight hundred pages more than the old Edition. One-third Of the articles has been entirely rewritten. The remaining two-thirds have been in all cases greatly altered: scarcely twenty have been reprinted as they originally stood. There are, besides, about two hundred additional articles which did not appear in the Old Edition, many of consider able length and importance, by which it is hoped that all omissions have been supplied. The subjects are more extensively illustrated than formerly: there are upwards of four hundred and fifty new woodcuts in the present Edition. It would take up too much space to give a list of even the most important works which have been used in the preparation Of the articles. In almost all Greek states, which were usually built upon a hill, rock, or some natural elevation, there was a castle or a citadel, erected upon the highest part of the rock or hill, to which the name of Acropolis, higher or upper city, was given. Thus we read of an acropolis at Athens, Corinth, Argos, Messene, and My other places. The Capitolium at Rome eu swered the same purpose as the Acropolis in the Greek cities; and of the same kind were the tower of Agathocles at Utica, and that of Antonia at Jerusalem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Mythology: In Relation to Greek Art The plan of this book is as follows. A brief summary is first given of the general principles that govern the formation of types in art; the development of the type of each god or goddess, genius or hero, is historically considered. In a matter like this it is essential that the method should be historical; only so can it appear that the development of art types is subject to the same laws, follows the same inevitable sequence of development and decay, as may be observed in any other department of human civilization. Book Classical Antiquities

Download or read book Classical Antiquities written by J. J. Eschenburg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classical Antiquities: Being Part of the Manual of Classical Literature For an account of the origin and design of the Manual of Classical Literature, the reader is respectfully referred to the Preface to that work. The present volume is a portion of the Manual, including but three of its Jive Parts. These three, viz.: Classical Geography and Chronology, Greek ind Roman Mythology, and Greek and Roman Antiquities, are published separately, from a regard to the wishes of some teachers, especially in the primary classical schools. The reasons for a separate publication of these parts will appear, when it is considered, that the scholar, in the very commencement of his classical studies, needs some guide and help in each of these branches, while it is not so essential that he should attend particularly at first to the branches with which the two other parts of the Manual are occupied. The whole ground embraced in the Manual, the student must, indeed, go over before completing his classical course; but the Archaeology of Literature and Art, and the Systematic History and Criticism of the Classical Authors, are not often included in the studies at the Academy. In consequence of suggestions of this kind, a thousand copies of the three parts contained in this volume were printed in connection with the first and second editions of the Manual, and the demand for them has been such as to induce the publisher to issue another impression. This new edition of the volume styled Classical Antiquities is much more valuable than the former, as it corresponds to the fourth edition of the Manual, and is illustrated by numerous engravings. A peculiarity of this volume, which has greatly recommended it in the estimation of teachers, is its comprehensiveness united with a fullness of detail sufficient for all the common purposes of elementary instruction. Ancient Geography with the Topography of Rome and Athens, Classical Chronology, Mythology, Greek Antiquities, and Roman Antiquities, are here presented within the compass of 304 pages. There is not in the English language, it is believed, another work in which these topics, all so essential to the young classical scholar, are brought into one volume and thus adapted for daily use.
