Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Budhism: In Its Modern Development My previous work, on Eastern Monachism, describes the discipline, rites, and present circumstances of the Budhist priesthood. All the reviewers who have no ticed it, have spoken of it in favourable terms and I am sincerely grateful for the encouragement that, from this source, I have received. To avoid a seem ing egotism, in quoting from myself, I have restricted to the Index all reference to its pages. Inadvertently, a few sentences that have appeared in it, are inserted in the Manual. By a perusal of both these works, the student will be prepared to understand the general outline of the system; as, although its literature is elaborate, its elementary principles are few. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of Buddhism’s transmission to China in the distant past and its present transmission to the West have striking parallels. The Buddhist scriptures and practices that crept gradually into China from India had developed in different historical periods and in different environments. The ways in which the ancient Chinese made sense of the bewildering array of Buddhist doctrines that had developed over hundreds of years in India and adapted them to their own circumstances ultimately gave rise to a uniquely Chinese Buddhism. The West now seems to be much like ancient China, encountering many different threads of Buddhism coming from distant lands, threads which reflect many permutations of Buddhist thought and practice that developed in Asia over the past 2500 years under circumstances quite foreign to the present. Do these various forms have anything in common? What, then, is Buddhism? How will it adapt to Western culture and still be Buddhism? What does it have to offer people living a twenty-first century modern life? In this book, the eminent Chinese Buddhist Master Yinshun gives us some answers.
Download or read book A Buddhist Doctrine of Experience written by Thomas A. Kochumuttom and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 1982 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giving a new translation and interpretation of the basic works of Vasubandhu the yogacarin, the author shows that Yogacara metaphysics is basically the same as that of the early Buddhism. He contends that the Yogacara writings are open to interpretation in terms of realistic pluralism, and thus challenges their traditional interpretation in terms of idealistic monism. His translation is faithful to the original, arguments convincing and consistent, and presentation clear and readable. The texts translated and interpreted are (i) Madhyanta-vibhago-karika-bhasya, (ii) Trisvabhava-nirdesa, (iii) Trimsatika and (iv) Vimsatika. The doctrine of experience presented by these texts may be summarised in the words of the author as follow: The experience of samsara consists basically in one's being forced to view oneself as the grasper (grahaka), the enjoyer (bhoktr), knower (jnatr) of all beings, which are then viewed as the graspable (grahya), the enjoyable (bhojya), the knowable (jneya). There one cannot help mentally constructing the distinction between the subject and the object, the grasper and the graspable, the enjoyer and the enjoyable...
