Written work at the board and at the seats should acquaint the children with the figures and symbols of operation." McMurry, Special Method in Arithmetic, Macmillan, pp 140-141. CHAPTER V. Arithmetic in the Intermediate Grades. In the intermediate grades we will consider grades fourth, fifth and sixth. The fourth grade is outlined in the Wheeler Text, Primary Book, last portio n. The work for the fifth and sixth grades is found in the Wheeler Intermediate Book. In the discussion of the work for the intermediate grades we may begin to consider the teaching of the arithmetical processes and their application in a more serious manner. The student in the intermediate grades should master most of the arithmetical processes and operations especially those of a fundamental nature. In these grades the student possesses the ability to begin to generalize and the teacher may apply inductive methods by the use of concrete examples. The teacher may inductively derive and formulate definitions and rules which the student utilizes in later work. Arithmetical processes and their modes of expression are the means by which we give quantative interpretation to the large mass of things and to the active forces in the physical world. The teacher should lead the pupils constantly to measure, compare and simplify number relations. The need of arithmetic in the common affairs of life and the close correlation of its processes with geographical, scientific and economic questions, should justify the selection of many important units as they are applied in community affairs. Consequently the teacher should begin to vitalize the subject matter...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Arithmetic: A Manual for Teachers A statement of the aims of a book on the methods of teaching should set forth its distinctive purpose. Books on the pedagogy of arithmetic which have contributed to improvement in methods of teaching this subject may be divided into three classes. Some seek to give a general survey of the aims and methods of teaching arithmetic, concerning themselves with no details in any specific topic, and leaving it to each teacher to apply the general method to the specific problems of his grade work. Other books give the philosophy and psychology of mathematics in the hope that a clearer comprehension of the basic concepts of arithmetic by the teacher will inevitably lead to more effective methods of instruction. The third group of books devotes itself merely to the task of giving remedial devices to meet specific teaching difficulties. General methods of teaching any subject may set forth ideals of instruction without regard to possibility of attainment. Specific devices tend to establish stereotyped forms to be followed slavishly without a comprehension of the basic principles. The writer has sought to evolve a book that is eclectic in aim. The early chapters study critically the values of arithmetic, the principles governing the organization of the course of study, and the psychology underlying sound method in arithmetic. The later chapters set forth methods rather than the method of teaching each of the important branches of arithmetic. Book excerpt: This book was written for the purpose of improving the teaching of arithmetic. The experience of the authors in training prospective teachers confirms them in the opinion that the teaching of arithmetic is suffering partly because many teachers lack instruction in its theories, methods, and devices. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excellent teaching of mathematics at the elementary school level requires that the teacher be an expert in school mathematics. This textbook for prospective teachers presents topics from the K-6 mathematics curriculum, but at a greater depth than is usually found in the classroom. The added knowledge that comes from this approach gives the teacher essential insight into how the topics interrelate and where difficulties might lie. With this deeper mathematical preparation, the teacher is better able to explain concepts, demonstrate computational procedures and lead students through problem-solving techniques. The primary focus is on the foundations of arithmetic, along with a selection of topics from geometry and a wide range of applications. The number line is used throughout to visualize concepts and to tie them to the solution of problems. The book emphasizes how to explain the concepts and how to explain problem solutions. This is a textbook for a college course in mathematics for prospective elementary school teachers. It will also be a resource for the instructors of such courses.
