Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Arithmetic The author has long contemplated the issuing of a manual of methods and suggestions, to accompany the Graded-School Arithmetics, but circumstances beyond his control have prevented its preparation until the present year. The Manual now presented is specially designed for those teachers who desire to improve their methods of teaching arithmetic, and it is hoped that it may prove as useful as its plan is unique. Part I is chiefly devoted to the teaching of the more elementary processes. The highest arithmetic in the series is, as a rule, taught better than the lower, and there is less demand for methods and suggestions. There is an earnest inquiry among teachers for approved methods of elementary instruction. Part II contains illustrative solutions of all the more difficult problems in the two higher books. The mere routine activities of daily life demand a mastery of certain number facts and number processes. In addition, a care fully selected curriculum in arithmetic helps to give children an insight into social activities that would otherwise be unknown to them. It is necessary that children understand the meaning of averages and the modes of computing them; that they know the meaning of common mathematical symbols, of percentages of increases and decreases, of rates of taxation, of interest, of insurance - in a word, the common business practices of social life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Arithmetic A Practical Arithmetic should deserve its name, and we have kept this in view throughout. We have asked, What appli cations of Arithmetic is the pupil likely to need in life? What are the shortest methods, and those actually used by business men? The branches of Mercantile Arithmetic have received special attention, - the making out of bills, the casting of interest, partial payments, operations in profit and loss, averaging accounts, equation of payments, due. Much collateral information on busi ness subjects has been embodied. In a word, the author has weighed every line, with the view of giving what would be most useful and best prepare the learner for the duties of the counting room. The great distinguishing feature of this book is that it is adapted to the present state of things. The last five years have been five years of financial changes; specie payments have been suspended, prices have doubled, the tariff has been altered, a national tax Rivied, &c. N o Arithmetic that ignores these changes should be placed in the hands of our youth. Time is too precious to be wasted in learning things wrong, only to unlearn them on enter ing into active life. Our examples are adapted to the present: the prices given are those of to-day; the difference between gold and currency is recognized and taught; the rates of duties agree with the present tariff; the mode of computing the national ih come taxis explained; a full description is given of the different classes of United States securities, with examples to show the comparative results of investments in them. These are matters that children, as well as adults, ought to know and understand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Arithmetic: Oral and Written Great pains have also been taken to make this work superior to all others in its typographical arrangement and finish, and in the general tastefulness of its mechanical execution. The author takes pleasure in acknowledging his indebtedness for many valuable suggestions received from teachers of experience and others interested in the work of education; especially to Joseph Ficklin, Ph. D., Professor of Mathematics in the University of Missouri, by whom chiefly the sections upon Involution, Evolution, Progressions, and Annuities have been prepared as well as to Henry Kiddle, A. M., Superintendent of Schools in the city of New York, for valuable assistance, especially in the higher departments of Percentage, and for important suggestions in relation to other parts of the work. How nearly the author has accomplished his purpose, to give to the public, in one volume, a clear, scientific, and complete treatise on this subject, combining and systematizing many real improvements of practical value and importance to the business man and the student, the intelligent and experienced educator must decide. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Short Methods in Arithmetic, Designed for the Use of Schools and to Facilitate the Arithmetical Calculations of Business and Science A very great amount of useful progress has been made, during the last thirty years, in the development of the power of common arithmetic to deal with many problems for which Algebra was wont, less intellectually, to be employed. Algebra has a. Boundless field for reasoning and operation, in which Arithmetic is only a very humble though a requisite auxiliary; but the employment of the more elementary processes of Algebra to solve arith metical questions used to' be too often resorted to, as a mechanical relief from the more useful work of purely arithmetical investigation. Book Rational Elementary Arithmetic Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rational Elementary Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by Henry Holmes Belfield and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Elementary Arithmetic He is next led to apply his facts to other concrete problems, such as: If John has one marble and Henry has three, how many have both? Which are not constructive, but which oblige him to use his judgment. Finally the number combinations thus learned and applied are fixed by a series of drills. An essential feature of these drill tables is that they make the subject less formidable to the child. For example, the tables on page 43 show that if the child adds three, say, to a series of numbers ending in six, all the sums will end in nine. As soon as the child masters the develop ment of a number, he is taught to associate it with certain facts of his daily life; as, for example, in connection with the number eight, is given the table of dry measure, and with the number twelve, the foot, the months, and the mysteries of the clock face. In this way the child is sure to be interested, and his powers both of memory and of judgment are developed. Throughout the book much use is made of graphic illustrations and concrete problems, such as drawing to scale. Book American Comprehensive Arithmetic Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Comprehensive Arithmetic Classic Reprint written by M. A. Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Comprehensive Arithmetic IN this work, the divisions of arithmetic are presented in their natural order. The fundamental operations upon integers, common fractions, decimals, denominate numbers, and numbers expressed by letters, are followed by their applications to business and to various employments. The introduction of the chapter on literal quantities is somewhat of an innovation, but is in accord with the views of leading teachers, and is based upon sound principles. The elementary parts of algebra should be studied before the advanced parts of arithmetic, because they are more easily com prehended, and because they afford valuable assistance in difficult problems. For the same reasons, the solution of many classes of problems should be taught by algebraic processes, before they are taught by the intricate methods required by analysis. The fact, too, that most pupils must leave school quite early, is a strong reason for introducing into arithmetic the elements of algebra and the conclusions of geometry.
