Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual for Naval Cadets This act, as liberal and encouraging on the part of the Lords of the Admiralty as it was attering to the compi lation they had been pleased to honour with their approval, necessitated its publication. The Author felt that it would be but a doubtful proof of the attachment he feels for the service to which he belongs were he from apprehension of criticism, or feelings of false delicacy, to suppress a work which his superiors have honoured with their commenda tion. In the handling of the several subjects the Author desires to express his obligations to those professional friends who have conferred upon him the benefit of their remarks on some points which he was permitted to bring under their personal notice. Book Accuracy and Probability of Fire

Download or read book Accuracy and Probability of Fire written by Ensign J. H. Glennon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-02 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Accuracy and Probability of Fire: Prepared for the Use of Cadets at the U. S. Naval Academy This volume was originally intended as a treatise on Probability of Fire alone, to supply the place of an exhausted edition on that subject. The close connection between error and deviation, and the impossibility of treating either completely without the use of the other, suggested the combination of both under the name Accuracy and Probability of Fire. Only such principles of probability are deduced as are thought necessary to an understanding of the subject the methods followed being little changed from those in Merriman's Method of Least Squares, and Natural Philosophy by Thomson and Tait. Download or read book Manual of Instruction in Ordnance and Gunnery written by United States; Bureau of Nava Personnel and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Instruction in Ordnance and Gunnery: For the U. S. Naval Training Service Apprentices must not be allowed to handle arms and ammunition except in the presence of an instructor or a gunner's mate. At the end of a period, all ammunition is to be returned to the armory together with an account of the amount expended. It is to be impressed upon the apprentices that the breaking or loss of parts of ordnance, especially in the case of small arms, occurs even when the greatest care is taken, and that they must report the fact as soon as it comes to their notice. At the end of the period the instructor will inspect such parts of the ordnance outfit as have been used and see that they are returned to their proper places before he dismisses the apprentices under his charge. The Arrangement of a Class for instruction should be such that all may see and hear what is being explained. The various divisions of a class should be separated sufficiently so as not to interfere with one another. The crowding around the instructor by a few to the disadvantage of the remainder of a class should not be permitted. Periods. - It is expected that only about one half of the time in a period will be required for the instruction as laid down. An opportunity should then be given apprentices to ask questions relating to the instruction just given. The remainder of the period is to be devoted to asking the apprentices in turn such questions at will bring out and impress upon their minds the more important points of the day's instruction. Apprentices are to be encouraged to ask questions both during and outside of periods. Blackboards are to be used whenever practicable, to illustrate the instruction. Instructors should preserve order and report all cases of inaptitude, inattention, or misconduct during their periods of instruction Apprentices creating a serious disturbance should be sent at once to the office of the officer of the day, and a report of the details of the case should be made at the end of the period. Apprentices showing special aptitude or zeal in gunnery should be so reported for favorable consideration when promotions are about to be made. Book First Aid to the Injured and Transportation of the Wounded

Download or read book First Aid to the Injured and Transportation of the Wounded written by Henry C. Beyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Aid to the Injured, and Transportation of the Wounded: Six Lectures Delivered to the Naval Cadets of the First Class at the Naval Academy During the Winter of 1892 The purpose of these lectures and the demonstrations which will follow them is to give you that knowledge and training which will enable you to administer to your comrades whatever help they may need when injured, and to do it intelligently and with perfect safety. The desire to aid an injured person and to succor a fellow creature in misfortune is an attribute of every good man and woman. An acquaintance with the principles of First Aid to the Wounded, therefore, ought to form part of their education, but it is to soldiers and sailors more especially, who are trained to expose themselves to the dangers of being wounded or otherwise injured, to Whom this knowledge seems particularly desirable. It is, furthermore, intended in this course of instruction to im press your minds with some of the leading and fundamental principles of hygiene, a knowledge of which will enable you to do much toward the prevention of infectious diseases among you, or, in case of an actual outbreak of an epidemic of whatever kind of disease, will at least form a safe guide for your conduct while it prevails, giving you a better chance of escape than you other wise would have. Most all of the civilized nations, after having become convinced, through the accumulation of unmistakable historical statistics, of the enormous death-rates occurring from preventable diseases in an army in the field or wherever many persons are closely housed together, as well as of the great benefits derived from a knowl edge ou the part of the soldiery of First Aid to the Injured, and the principles of hygiene, have caused such instructions to be made compulsory.
