Book A Manual for improving fish production in Northern Zambia through integrated farming systems

Download or read book A Manual for improving fish production in Northern Zambia through integrated farming systems written by Nsonga, A and published by WorldFish. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual was written as part of the Integrated Research in Development for Improved Livelihoods Programme in Northern Province, Zambia (IRDLP) and is primarily intended for extension agents to use with smallholder farmers engaged in semi-intensive fish farming in Northern Zambia. The IRDLP is an Irish Aid-funded project implemented by WorldFish, Harvest Plus and the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR). The goal of the IRDLP is to help improve the livelihoods, health status, and food and nutrition security of resource-poor households in the Mbala and Luwingu districts in Northern Zambia, especially women and vulnerable groups. This is achieved through generating and providing evidence-based information, scientific technologies and livelihood solutions to trigger community and farmer innovations for positive change. This manual provides information on how smallholder fish farmers can improve fish production in Northern Zambia, particularly in the Luwingu and Mbala districts, through integrated farming practices.

Book Integrated Livestock fish Farming Systems

Download or read book Integrated Livestock fish Farming Systems written by David Little and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated farming in Asia is either considered an eco-friendly good that should be preserved for environmental reasons or a poor practice that will soon be superseded by industrial aquaculture. This report finds that most livestock-fish integration is sound business conducted by entrepreneurs accessing urban markets where the price of fish is relatively low. It can be used as part of a strategy to reduce environmental impacts of intensive livestock production and to produce low-cost food. Farmers have proved adept at both developing their systems to meet their own needs and diversifying the role of ponds, fish and livestock within their complex livelihoods.

Book Manual for Intensive Fish Farming in the Tropics

Download or read book Manual for Intensive Fish Farming in the Tropics written by Morfow Paul Nkeze and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A viable and sustainable alternative that can ensure the bridging of the yawning gap between fish supply and demand therefore lies in aquaculture which offers vast opportunities for investment. Aquaculture production can be increased substantially by adopting a technological shift from semi intensive to intensive systems of production as is the trend worldwide. This book aims at enlightening and encouraging the public to invest in fish-farming based on the use of simple technology of Water Flow-through Systems (WFS) and Water Recirculating System (WRS), for fish production in concrete tanks. The system can be set up in urban or peri- urban premises of little space that is easily manageable and adequately profitable with guaranteed good returns on investment. It targets a wide audience from school leavers to university students and graduates, civil servants, retirees and practicing fish farmers. It is a complete reference book on WFS and WRS in Africa and includes basic material on health management, fluid mechanics, monitoring & control systems, waste management, fish nutrition and aquaponics.

Book Fish Production in Integrated Farming Systems

Download or read book Fish Production in Integrated Farming Systems written by Siaw Yang Yap and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present paper outline the principles underlying the culture technology of fish production in integrated aquaculture-livestock farming systems, problems and constraints to such fish production technology. Approprite solution to these problems and some design system are briefly explored, to define ways maximize fish production in integrated farming systems. Fish production figures reported in published literature varies form 1.5 tonnes/year. The higher fish pond/year to 18 tonnes/ha of fish pond/year. The higher fish production is attaiable through intensive management inputs, involving high stocking densities of complementary-feeding fish species, addition of energy-rich and aeration of fish pond water. Intermittent harvesting of fish at slow phases of fish growth curve may further increase fish production of integrated farming systems. [Author's abstract].

Book The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2018

Download or read book The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2018 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2018 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture emphasizes the sector’s role in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, and measurement of progress towards these goals. It notes the particular contributions of inland and small-scale fisheries, and highlights the importance of rights-based governance for equitable and inclusive development. As in past editions, the publication begins with a global analysis of trends in fisheries and aquaculture production, stocks, processing and use, trade and consumption, based on the latest official statistics, along with a review of the status of the world’s fishing fleets and human engagement and governance in the sector. Topics explored in Parts 2 to 4 include aquatic biodiversity; the ecosystem approach to fisheries and to aquaculture; climate change impacts and responses; the sector’s contribution to food security and human nutrition; and issues related to international trade, consumer protection and sustainable value chains. Global developments in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, selected ocean pollution concerns and FAO’s efforts to improve capture fishery data are also discussed. The issue concludes with the outlook for the sector, including projections to 2030. As always, The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture aims to provide objective, reliable and up-to- date information to a wide audience, including policy-makers, managers, scientists, stakeholders and indeed all those interested in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Book The State of the World s Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture

Download or read book The State of the World s Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of the World's Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture is FAO's first flagship publication on the global status of land and water resources. It is an 'advocacy' report, to be published every three to five years, and targeted at senior level decision makers in agriculture as well as in other sectors. SOLAW is aimed at sensitizing its target audience on the status of land resources at global and regional levels and FAO's viewpoint on appropriate recommendations for policy formulation. SOLAW focuses on these key dimensions of analysis: (i) quantity, quality of land and water resources, (ii) the rate of use and sustainable management of these resources in the context of relevant socio-economic driving factors and concerns, including food security and poverty, and climate change. This is the first time that a global, baseline status report on land and water resources has been made. It is based on several global spatial databases (e.g. land suitability for agriculture, land use and management, land and water degradation and depletion) for which FAO is the world-recognized data source. Topical and emerging issues on land and water are dealt with in an integrated rather than sectoral manner. The implications of the status and trends are used to advocate remedial interventions which are tailored to major farming systems within different geographic regions.
