Book A Man of Substances

Download or read book A Man of Substances written by David Partridge and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Gerry McCarthy hit the headlines in 1996, he was the man at the center of a five million dollar dope bust, the largest grow-op takedown in Canadian history. But when he hit the big city as a small-town teenager many years before, he was as green as grass. The story in between is a unique and winding journey through the vibrant, revolutionary years of the twentieth century. A Man of Substances looks unblinkingly at McCarthys invention, reaction, and folly over a life on the less sober side of the law. This memoir explores McCarthys journey, from a guitar slung across his shoulders to handcuffs around his wrists. In between are the exploits of one of Canadas marijuana cultivation pioneers, at turns resourceful and rash, sincere and sardonic, hardworking and hammered. He is paperboy and pot dealer, secret keeper and raconteur. Hes a devoted suburban family man with a pound of weed in the second car. Both entertaining and educational, A Man of Substances reflects the times and the culture of the world in which he grew up and explores that worlds folly and its shadows with equal candor. I liked...no, loved this book. - Betsy Powell, author of Bad Seeds

Book Substances Welfare and Social Relations

Download or read book Substances Welfare and Social Relations written by Amber Gazso and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substances, Welfare, and Social Relations uses intimate, complex portraits to tell the stories of people who have lived some part of their life course while using or recovering from using substances (such as alcohol or illicit or prescription drugs) and also being part of a family and experiencing poverties. Through these multifaceted stories, layered with a critical analysis of welfare policy, the book probes the deeply entrenched stigma of living with addiction and in low income. Amber Gazso’s work revolves around the three-principles idea that (1) addiction is part of everyday life; (2) if we believe that people are not their addictions, then stigmatizing addiction has no place in society; and (3) destigmatizing addiction and providing better, more imaginative programs and services invites and supports actionable hope. Reflecting on qualitative data, both narrative interviews and policy discourse, Substances, Welfare, and Social Relations illuminates how stigmas can be overturned through a collective praxis of hope.

Book Prohibitions and Psychoactive Substances in History Culture and Theory

Download or read book Prohibitions and Psychoactive Substances in History Culture and Theory written by Susannah Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a new contribution to the dynamic scholarly discussion of the control and regulation of psychoactive substances in culture and society. Offering new critical reflections on the reasons prohibitions have historically arisen, the book analyses "prohibitions" as ambivalent and tenuous interactions between the users of psychoactive substances and regulators of their use. This original collection of essays engages with contemporary debates concerning addiction, intoxication and drug regulation, and will be of interest to scholars in the arts, humanities and social sciences interested in narratives of prohibition and their social and cultural meanings.

Book House of Commons Home Affairs Committee Drugs New Psychoactive Substances and Prescription Drugs HC 819

Download or read book House of Commons Home Affairs Committee Drugs New Psychoactive Substances and Prescription Drugs HC 819 written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Home Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are facing an epidemic of psychoactive substances in the UK with deaths increasing by 79% in the last year. New versions of these "legal highs" are being produced at the rate of at least one a week, yet it has taking the Government a year to produce five pages of guidance on the use of alternative legislation. This slow response to the crisis may have led to more deaths. Those who sell these killer substances need to be held responsible. New laws should be enacted to put the onus on them. Especially at this time of year, young people need to take care about what substances they consume so their health and lives are not put at risk. Quick turn around mobile testing units should be utilised at festivals in order in order to facilitate the removal of potentially harmful or illegal substances from the site immediately and more specific education on psychoactive substances should be given in school and colleges. There are also currently 1.5 million people addicted to prescription drugs in the UK. The abuse of these types of substances is taking place in the shadows and its extent is still unquantified. Local GPs need to report their suspicious and collate information to illuminate this problem. Medical Royal Colleges should establish a joint working group to examine whether local health teams are effectively communicating concerns around individuals visiting multiple practices to request specific drugs.

Book The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Substances

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Substances written by Richard Rudgley and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all those who might like to believe that drug use has been relegated to the suburban rec rooms and ghetto crack houses of the late twentieth century, The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Substances offers shocking, yet thoroughly enlightening evidence to the contrary. In fact, from Neolithic man to Queen Victoria, humans have abused all sorts of drugs in the name of religion, tradition, and recreation, including such "controlled substances" as chocolate, lettuce, and toads. From glue-sniffing to LSD to kava, The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Substances provides the first reliable, comprehensive exploration of this fascinating and controversial topic. With over one hundred entries, acclaimed author Richard Rudgley covers not only the chemical and botanical background of each substance, but its physiological and psychological effect on the user. Of particular value is Rudgley's emphasis on the historical and cultural role of these mind-altering substances. Impeccably researched and hugely entertaining, The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Substances will appeal to anyone interested in one of the most misunderstood and yet also most widespread of human activities - the chemical quest for an altered state of consciousness.
