Download or read book An Analysis of Safety at the Terminals of Climbing Lanes on Two lane Highways written by Wolfgang S. Homburger and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes an investigation of potentially hazardous conditions at the upper end of climbing lanes on two-lane roads in Northern and Central California. It was postulated that, at such locations, there might be sideswipe accidents involving merging vehicles or head-on collisions of a vehicle swerving across the centerline to avoid such a sideswipe with a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Accident records covering five years at 21 potentially hazardous locations revealed that there are very few accidents directly related to the merging maneuver. Only 11 accidents at six locations were identified. The report suggests three guidelines for the location and design of climbing lanes to be considered in addition to those found in other literature. However, the general conclusion is that the merging areas at the terminals of climbing lanes on two-lane roads do not present a hazard of major proportions.

Download or read book Transportation Research in India written by Akhilesh Kumar Maurya and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-23 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This co-edited book focuses on the state-of-the-art research in transportation in India. Exploring the need for a sustainable transport paradigm in India, this timely book offers solution concepts for mobility and infrastructure challenges faced by local, state, and national transport authorities. The contents provide a holistic understanding of the paradigm, considering several case-studies and study findings from the leading transportation researchers in India. At the same time, it also addresses the pressing transportation related challenges such as road user safety, traffic operation efficiency, economic and social development, non-motorized transport planning, environmental impact mitigation, energy consumption reduction, land-use, equity, freight transport planning, multimodal coordination, access for the diverse range of travellers’ needs, sustainable pavement construction, and emerging vehicle technologies. The existing practices and policies in all the sectors and levels of transport are highlighted in this book with an emphasis on a broader vision for achieving sustainable and inclusive development. The information and data-driven inferences compiled in the book will be useful for practitioners, policymakers, educators, researchers, students, and individual learners.

Download or read book Advances in Human Aspects of Transportation written by Neville Stanton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 938 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the latest advances in research and development, design, operation and analysis of transportation systems and their complementary infrastructures. It reports on both theories and case studies on road and rail, aviation and maritime transportation. Further, it covers a wealth of topics, from accident analysis, vehicle intelligent control, and human-error and safety issues to next-generation transportation systems, model-based design methods, simulation and training techniques, and many more. A special emphasis is placed on smart technologies and automation in transport, and on the user-centered, ergonomic and sustainable design of transport systems. The book, which is based on the AHFE 2018 International Conference on Human Factors in Transportation, held in Orlando, Florida, USA on July 21–25, 2018, mainly addresses the needs of transportation system designers, industrial designers, human–computer interaction researchers, civil and control engineers, as well as vehicle system engineers. Moreover, it represents a timely source of information for transportation policy-makers and social scientists whose work involves traffic safety, management, and sustainability issues in transport.
