Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Lost Chapter in the History of the Steamboat I recollected him then. Fourteen or fifteen years back it had been his fancy to pet me as a child. It was this that had impressed him on. my memory. "Ah, you know me now," he said: "you remember when I used to be so much with Fulton and Roosevelt and Chancellor Livingston and Dr. Mitchell, at the Navy Yard house." This was the name given to my father's residence in Washington, not far from the Navy Yard. After recalling well remembered incidents and indulging in general remarks for a while, Mr. Delacy took a survey of my scantily furnished office, and said, "not overwhelmed with business, my young friend: so much the better for me: you will have the more time to attend to something I want you to undertake. If you succeed, it will be the making of both our fortunes. I want suit brought against every steamboat owner in the United States; and you must begin with old Billy McDonald, here in Baltimore. See this;" and, suiting the action to the word, my visitor drew from his breast pocket the original parchment letters patent, now before me, signed by James Madison, President, James Munroe, Secretary of State, and Richard Rush, Attorney General, granting to Nicholas J. Roosevelt the exclusive right to his 'new and useful improvement in propelling boats by steam.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. My business was scant, for I had but recently been admitted to the bar. I was ruminating, no doubt, upon my prospects, when the door was opened, and a handsome, elderly man, of distinguished presence, entered and asked me, in rich unctuous tones, and with a strong Irish accent, if my name was Latrobe, and if I recollected him. His face was familiar, and so was his voice; but I could not place him. Seeing that I hesitated, he said, "and it would be strange if you did, for you were but a bit of a child when you last saw me in your father's house. I am John Devereux Delacy," and he rolled out his sounding name as though he was proud of it. I recollected him then. Fourteen or fifteen years back it had been his fancy to pet me as a child. It was this that had impressed him on my memory. "Ah, you know me now," he said: "you remember when I used to be so much with Fulton and Roosevelt and Chancellor Livingston and Dr. Mitchell, at the Navy Yard house." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steam-Boat Having been for several years in what Mrs. Maclecket, my worthy landlady, calls a com plaining way, I was persuaded by her advice to tr the benefit of the sea air in the steam-boat to reenock; and I found myself greatly ad vantaged by the same. I am not, however, sure that the benefit which my strength and ap petite received in those sea voyages was so much owing to the change of air, and the wholesome fume of the salt-water that I breath ed, as from the conversible and talkative com pany which I found among the other passen gers; by which my Spirits were maintained in a state jocund temperance, and my thoughts so lifted out of the cares of business, that I was, for the time, a new. Creature, bringing back with me to behind the counter a sort of youth thiness that lasted sometimes more than a fort night; keeping ofl' what Mrs. Maclecket called the hypochonders, till I again fell out of order. Lloyd and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lloyd's Steamboat Directory, and Disasters on the Western Waters, Containing the History of the First Application of Steam as a Motive Power: The Lives of John Fitch and Robert Fulton, Likeness Engravings of Their First Steamboats With all that profusion of Literature, for which the present age is remarkable, an opportunity sometimes offers to supply the public with a book which everybody admits to be a desideratum. We hope it is not presumptuous on our part to believe that the present work is one of that class which the American public cannot easily dispense with, inasmuch as it presents a record of facts and events which form an interesting and important part of our country's history. In this volume, if we do not greatly deceive ourselves, the reader will find a more complete account of the beginning and progress of Steam Navigation in the United States, and in the Great West especially, than has ever been comprised in any previous publication. As incidental to the history of Steam Navigation in the West, we have introduced a copious detail of the awful and heart-rending accidents which have been of too frequent occurrence in that region. We have also had drawn at great expense maps of the Western Rivers with the Towns, Cities, Landings, and Islands, correctly laid down, making a complete Guide Book for the travellers on these rivers. These maps are the only correct ones now printed, they are complete and reliable, having been drawn recently by Capt. John Tucker of Campbell Co., Ky., who is the oldest and best pilot on the western waters. We have also given in this volume a History of all the Railroads in the United States, their length, cost, officers, and other information to the travelling public of great worth; and as there are many Boats on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers unsafe and dangerous, we have concluded to name and point out to the travellers on these waters the safest and best Boats in each trade; and we pledge ourselves to notice no boat unworthy of the patronage of the travelling community. Book excerpt: The steamboat evokes images of leisurely travel, genteel gambling, and lively commerce, but behind the romanticized view is an engineering marvel that led the way for the steam locomotive. From the steamboat's development by Robert Fulton to the dawn of the Civil War, the new mode of transportation opened up America's frontiers and created new trade routes and economic centers. Firsthand accounts of steamboat accidents, races, business records and river improvements are collected here to reveal the culture and economy of the early to mid-1800s, as well as the daily routines of crew and passengers. A glossary of steamboat terms and a collection of contemporary accounts of accidents round out this history of the riverboat era.

Book A Patriot s History of the United States

Download or read book A Patriot s History of the United States written by Larry Schweikart and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-12-29 with total page 1350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.
