Book Evaluation of the Effects of Ability Grouping in Sixth grade Math at ABC Elementary

Download or read book Evaluation of the Effects of Ability Grouping in Sixth grade Math at ABC Elementary written by Jessica Morales and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This quantitative evaluation study endeavored to determine the effectiveness of the ability-grouped math classes at ABC Elementary. The main research question for this study was "Is the current practice of ability grouping in sixth-grade math at ABC Elementary a system that promotes academic gains on standardized tests and a positive self-efficacy in math for all students?" Research in the area of ability grouping suggested that leveling students by ability could promote social inequalities and academic consequences. While other studies in this field have found that different types of grouping students may benefit them. The math class participants in this research study were 211 sixth-grade math students enrolled in ABC Elementary over the period of three years, from 2010-2013. The researcher analyzed growth on fifth and sixth-grade standardized tests for growth, and middle school math placement test scores to chart gains or losses for sixth-grade students. A self-efficacy survey was also used to determine if students were in agreement with their math class placement and whether they were developing a positive self-efficacy in math while participating in their homogeneous math class. The conclusions of this study were that majority of students at ABC Elementary were performing well in math and had developed a positive self-efficacy. However, the findings also suggested that not all students felt their current math class challenged them, and that students participating in the accelerated class were experiencing a larger percentage of academic score declines than the other math class levels.

Book Learning style Inventory Use in Graduate Allied Health Education

Download or read book Learning style Inventory Use in Graduate Allied Health Education written by Antone R. Opekun and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most students enrolled in a Physician Assistant program perform well, but some lack certain critical learning skills needed for highly successful outcomes. Learning skills determine the mastery of target content. Many of these skills can be estimated by direct observation or self-reporting responses to specific queries and the patterns and preferences derived from those metrics comprise the construct of students' dominant learning style. The purpose for this study was to determine if a well-validated, proprietary instrument assessed learning skills of students as predictive of academic outcomes. Relationships between Learning Skill Inventory scores and academic outcomes were examined. A convenience sample was obtained of ninety-three graduate students consecutively enrolled over three years. It was concluded most students had not yet achieved a convergent learning style; that select item-components of the instrument are potentially better predictors of academic outcomes and a new model might identify students at risk for academic difficulties.

Book Predicting Math Achievement Using the SMALSI as a Measure of Motivation and Learning and Study Strategy Use

Download or read book Predicting Math Achievement Using the SMALSI as a Measure of Motivation and Learning and Study Strategy Use written by David Andrew Kahn and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the School Motivation and Learning Strategies Inventory (SMALSI) and the AIMSweb Math Winter Benchmarks to determine if they could be used by school personnel to identify students at-risk of low performance in mathematics. Previous research shows strategy use enhances math achievement and math fluency predicts math achievement. It was thought that if scores on the SMALSI and AIMSweb Math Winter Benchmarks were found to correlate to scores on the math subtests of the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement (WJ-III) and the TAKS Math Test, then this would provide evidence for using the SMALSI and AIMSweb Benchmarks for identifying students at-risk of learning problems in mathematics. Participants (n = 176) completed the AIMSweb Math Winter Benchmarks, the SMALSI, the math subtests of the WJ-III, and the TAKS Math Test. None of the scales of the SMALSI were statistically significant predictors of the variance in performance on the WJ-III when used individually. The Writing/Research Skills scale explained the most variance as an individual predictor. When all nine scales were used as predictors, they explained a statistically significant portion of the variance on the WJ-III, with the Reading/Comprehension Strategies scale being the most significant predictor. The level of learning and study strategy use predicted more of the variance in performance on the WJ-III for students in Fifth Grade than for students in Third and Fourth Grade, even though the level of strategy use remained the same across the three grade levels. In general, females reported using more learning and study strategies and more anxiety during test-taking situations while males reported lower academic motivation and more attention/concentration difficulties. Finally, the AIMSweb Math Winter Benchmarks explained a statistically significant portion of the variance in performance on the WJ-III and the TAKS Math Test. Based on these results, the SMALSI would be a useful screening tool for identifying students who require explicit instruction of learning and study strategies designed to enhance math achievement, and the AIMSweb Math Winter Benchmarks would be a useful screening tool for identifying students at-risk of academic difficulties in mathematics.

Designed to complement the Mental Measurements Yearbooks, Tests in Print fills a pressing need for a comprehensive bibliography of all commercially available English language tests in print. Although these volumes are useful in and of themselves, their maximum usefulness requires the availability and use of the Mental Measurements Yearbooks. Although information on available tests and specific test bibliographies is valuable, the greatest service which Tests in Print can perform is to encourage test users to choose tests more wisely by consulting the MMY test reviews, test reviews from journals, and the professional literature on the construction, use, and validity of the tests being considered. Tests in Print IV contains information on over four thousand instruments. Along with a brief description, entries includes population, scoring, pricing, publisher information, and a reference list of professional literature citing articles relevant to individual instruments. Indexes of titles, classified subjects, names, and scores, as well as a publisher's directory and index are included, with notations for out-of-print instruments. Information is given for tests is a wide range of areas, including education, psychology, counseling, management, health care, career planning, sociology, child development, social science, and research. Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.
