Book Proverbs in World Literature

Download or read book Proverbs in World Literature written by Wolfgang Mieder and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary critics and folklorists have long been interested in the use and function of proverbial language in literature. Proverbs in World Literature enables scholars and students to establish what has been published on proverbs, proverbial expressions, proverbial comparisons, proverbial exaggerations, and wellerisms in the works of many authors throughout the world. This international bibliography contains 2,654 entries, of which the first 284 comprise a section of General Studies. Proverb dictionaries based on texts collected from literary works, books and articles about numerous authors, studies of the interrelationship of proverbs and folk literature (fairy tales, legends, tall tales, folk songs, etc.) and theoretical writings on the integration and function of proverbs in literature in general are listed here. The second part of the bibliography is arranged alphabetically according to the last name of the literary author whose proverbial usage has been investigated. Anonymous works are also listed alphabetically. A name index of the scholars cited appears at the end. Extensive materials from many languages and cultures are collected and organized. The bibliography thus includes not only proverb studies regarding the major authors of world literature, but also those investigations that deal with regional writers.

Book Human Dignity in an African Context

Download or read book Human Dignity in an African Context written by Motsamai Molefe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contribution to African philosophy, by philosophers focusing specifically on the concept of human dignity in ethical theory. The concept of ‘human dignity’ denotes the intrinsic and superlative worth associated with human beings in virtue of which we owe them utmost moral regard. Although dignity is a foundational concept for African philosophy, there remains scant literature in African philosophy dedicated to critical and systematic reflection on the concept of human dignity. This volume responds to this lacuna by bringing together chapters that offer philosophical exposition, defense (or even rejection) and application of the concept of human dignity in light of intellectual resources in African cultures, such as ubuntu, personhood, and serithi.

Book Historical Dictionary of Lesotho

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Lesotho written by Rosenberg and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Lesotho is a small state never likely to be a major player in global affairs, its special interactions with South Africa make it a prototype for regional cooperation. Joint action by South Africa's and Botswana's military forces to end anarchy and preserve democracy in Lesotho serves as an important test case of regional peacekeeping in Africa. This reference provides comprehensive entries on historical events and personalities and focuses especially on the Basotho who have shaped Lesotho's development rather than on colonial officials and other expatriates. Greatest attention is given to the events, institutions, issues, personalities, places and external relationships of the post-independence era. The bibliography introduces a plethora of newer publications about Lesotho that have supplanted the rather sparse published literature previously available. An extensive chronology of Lesotho's evolution is included. The authors range of professional expertise and ability to compliment each author's areas of specialization. Offers in depth coverage of the most crucial events and participants in Lesotho's development.

Book Chaka

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Mofolo
  • Publisher : Waveland Press
  • Release : 2013-05-21
  • ISBN : 1478609729
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Chaka written by Thomas Mofolo and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2013-05-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaka is a genuine masterpiece that represents one of the earliest major contributions of black Africa to the corpus of modern world literature. Mofolos fictionalized life-story account of Chaka (Shaka), translated from Sesotho by D. P. Kunene, begins with the future Zulu kings birth followed by the unwarranted taunts and abuse he receives during childhood and adolescence. The author manipulates events leading to Chakas status of great Zulu warrior, conqueror, and king to emphasize classic tragedys psychological themes of ambition and power, cruelty, and ultimate ruin. Mofolos clever nods to the supernatural add symbolic value. Kunenes fine translation renders the dramatic and tragic tensions in Mofolos tale palpable as the richness of the authors own culture is revealed. A substantial introduction by the translator provides valuable context for modern readers.
