Book Public Medievalists Racism and Suffrage in the American Women s College

Download or read book Public Medievalists Racism and Suffrage in the American Women s College written by Mary Dockray-Miller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, part of growing interest in the study of nineteenth-century medievalism and Anglo-Saxonism, closely examines the intersections of race, class, and gender in the teaching of Anglo-Saxon in the American women’s colleges before World War I, interrogating the ways that the positioning of Anglo-Saxon as the historical core of the collegiate English curriculum also silently perpetuated mythologies about Manifest Destiny, male superiority, and the primacy of northern European ancestry in United States culture at large. Analysis of college curricula and biographies of female professors demonstrates the ways that women used Anglo-Saxon as a means to professional opportunity and political expression, especially in the suffrage movement, even as that legitimacy and respectability was freighted with largely unarticulated assumptions of racist and sexist privilege. The study concludes by connecting this historical analysis with current charged discussions about the intersections of race, class, and gender on college campuses and throughout US culture.

Book Lexicon Grammaticorum

Download or read book Lexicon Grammaticorum written by Harro Stammerjohann and published by de Gruyter. This book was released on 1996 with total page 1084 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Lexicon Grammaticorum" is a comprehensive reference book that provides information on the lives and work of all scholars and thinkers throughout the world who have concerned themselves down the ages with the study and description of language. The "Lexicon" contains articles on more than 1,500 representatives of the world's linguistic traditions, written by 422 authors from 27 countries. Generally, an article consists of a biography, an abstract of the linguist's achievements, including his or her influence, and a two-part bibliography, listing first his or her writings, then those about him or her. Whenever possible, the references are complete; where the works are two numerous for them all to be listed, as is often the case with more recent linguists, only the main titles appear, with references to already existing bibliographies. The aim of the "Lexicon" is twofold: namely to provide access to the history of linguistics through its most important representatives and to combine the world's diverse linguistic traditions in one book, thus showing what is individual and is universal in human thought about language.
