Book Steering a Middle Course

Download or read book Steering a Middle Course written by Sarwono Kusumaatmadja and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2020-08-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born with motor impairment, Sarwono Kusumaatmadja grew up with low self-esteem. Yet, within this awkward, shy boy lay a steely resolve to overcome his weaknesses. It was this same resolve that propelled him to study at high school in the United Kingdom, thousands of miles from his native land. Navigating life on his own in the UK forged Sarwono into an independent and resilient individual; one who never flinched in the face of challenges, but also one who never wanted to play the hero either. His unique character and integrity acted like a magnet for opportunities back home in Indonesia. He was chosen to be Chairman of the University Student Council of the Bandung Institute of Technology even though he did not campaign for it. And when he made it into the national parliament, it was at the behest of the military. He then became Secretary General of Golkar, the country’s ruling party, without having to pull any strings. In taking on all the opportunities that came his way, Sarwono remained true to himself, which later meant saying no to President Soeharto when the latter tried to recruit him to be part of his inner circle.

Book Steering the Metropolis

Download or read book Steering the Metropolis written by Inter American Development Bank and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinctive feature of urbanization in the last 50 years is the expansion of urban populations and built development well beyond what was earlier conceived as the city limit, resulting in metropolitan areas. This is challenging the relevance of traditional municipal boundaries, and by extension, traditional governing structures and institutions. "Steering the Metropolis: Metropolitan Governance for Sustainable Urban Development,” encompasses the reflections of thought and practice leaders on the underlying premises for governing metropolitan space, sectoral adaptations of those premises, and dynamic applications in a wide variety of contexts. Those reflections are structured into three sections. Section 1 discusses the conceptual underpinnings of metropolitan governance, analyzing why political, technical, and administrative arrangements at this level of government are needed. Section 2 deepens the discussion by addressing specific sectoral themes of mobility, land use planning, environmental management, and economic production, as well as crosscutting topics of metropolitan governance finance, and monitoring and evaluation. Section 3 tests the concepts and their sectoral adaptations against the practice, with cases from Africa, America, Asia, and Europe.

Book Steering Sustainability in an Urbanising World

Download or read book Steering Sustainability in an Urbanising World written by Anitra Nelson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability has become the key challenge for urban planners, housing and infrastructure policy makers. Citizens are increasingly encouraged to live more compactly; in denser urban developments, to use less water and other natural resources and to choose public transport. While councils, government agencies and private business invest in a broad range of promotions offering discounts on sustainable products and services, uptake has been slow and the impacts marginal at a time when environmental stresses suggest that we must act fast. This book examines this pressing problem in a holistic way, discussing broad-scale sustainability policies and programmes for achieving sustainable urban futures. It brings together academics and practitioners to analyze the complexity and interdependence of principles, models, processes and practices of sustainability in a range of integrated sectors as well as the establishment and maintenance of sustainable physical infrastructure in cities.

Book Steering Human Evolution

Download or read book Steering Human Evolution written by Yehezkel Dror and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity must steer its evolution. As human knowledge moves a step ahead of Darwin’s theories, this book presents the emergence of human-made meta-evolution shaping our alternative futures. This novel process poses fateful challenges to humanity, which require regulation of emerging science and technology which may endanger the future of our species. However, to do so successfully, a novel ‘humanity-craft’ has to be developed; main ideologies and institutions need redesign; national sovereignty has to be limited; a decisive global regime becomes essential; some revaluation of widely accepted norms becomes essential; and a novel type of political leader, based on merit in addition to public support, is urgently needed. Taking into account the strength of nationalism and vested interests, it may well be that only catastrophes will teach humanity to metamorphose into a novel epoch without too high transition costs. But initial steps, such as United Nation reforms, are urgent in order to contain calamities and may soon become feasible. Being both interdisciplinary and based on personal experience of the author, this book adds up to a novel paradigm on steering human evolution. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of modern history, evolution sciences, future studies, political science, philosophy of action, and science and technology. It will also be of wide appeal to the general reader anxious about the future of life on Earth. Comments on the Corona pandemic add to the book’s concrete significance.

Book Summary of Martha Beck s Steering by Starlight

Download or read book Summary of Martha Beck s Steering by Starlight written by Everest Media, and published by Everest Media LLC. This book was released on 2022-06-11T22:59:00Z with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The first person to go into a situation is often carrying a shotgun. This is because the suspects have a very intense fight-or-flight reaction when they first see law enforcement officials. They are usually doing drugs as well as selling them, and this makes them about as violent and unpredictable as humans get. #2 You should be able to identify and dissolve most of the mind clouds that keep you from seeing your own North Star. This takes a lot of practice, but it will bring you inner peace and help you build your outward empire. #3 What we think would bring us happiness often won’t bring us the satisfaction we seek. What we’re really after when we yearn for something is a feeling state. In the spaces below, write a word or two that best describes the feeling state you’d get from having each of the things you want. #4 The four feeling states we all desire are peace, security, belonging, and comfort. We think we’ll get these feelings by getting anything from an Olympic gold medal to our parents’ approval. But external circumstances do not create feeling states. Feeling states create external circumstances.
