Book Defying Hitler

Download or read book Defying Hitler written by Sebastian Haffner and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-07-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defying Hitler was written in 1939 and focuses on the year 1933, when, as Hitler assumed power, its author was a 25-year-old German law student, in training to join the German courts as a junior administrator. His book tries to answer two questions people have been asking since the end of World War II: “How were the Nazis possible?” and “Why did no one stop them?” Sebastian Haffner’s vivid first-person account, written in real time and only much later discovered by his son, makes the rise of the Nazis psychologically comprehensible. “An astonishing memoir... [a] masterpiece.” — Gabriel Schoenfeld, The New York Times Book Review “A short, stabbing, brilliant book... It is important, first, as evidence of what one intelligent German knew in the 1930s about the unspeakable nature of Nazism, at a time when the overwhelming majority of his countrymen claim to have know nothing at all. And, second, for its rare capacity to reawaken anger about those who made the Nazis possible.” — Max Hastings, The Sunday Telegraph “Defying Hitler communicates one of the most profound and absolute feelings of exile that any writer has gotten between covers.” — Charles Taylor, Salon “Sebastian Haffner was Germany’s political conscience, but it is only now that we can read how he experienced the Nazi terror himself — that is a memoir of frightening relevance today.” — Heinrich Jaenicke, Stern “The prophetic insights of a fairly young man... help us understand the plight, as Haffner refers to it, of the non-Nazi German.” — The Denver Post “Sebastian Haffner’s Defying Hitler is a most brilliant and imaginative book — one of the most important books we have ever published.” — Lord Weidenfeld

Book Not All Was Lost

Download or read book Not All Was Lost written by IRENE BESSETTE and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-08-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IRENA BESSETTE (BAKOWSKA), was born as Irene Borman in 1924 to two Jewish dentists in the heart of the Jewish section of Warsaw. She was two years younger than her older sister who also survived the war and the Holocaust with her, as told in Not All Was Lost: A Young Woman’s Memoir, 1939-1946. Irene now lives in Portland as does her son whose birth under German occupation is also part of this story. When the Germans invaded Poland in 1939, Irene was just 15 and her sister Karolina was 17. In this story we follow a fifteen-year-old Jewish girl and how she survived and lived, matured and became a woman through the tragic years of World War II and the Nazi Occupation. Millions of people perished, millions were wounded, and countless property was destroyed. Yet the author affirms that not all was lost. How was it possible? To answer this question, the reader is taken on a journey through that time to Warsaw, bombed mercilessly for twenty-six days. After the Occupation began, the reader observes the daily life of the Jewish people under Nazi rule. How did they behave? How would the reader behave under such circumstances? Was it possible to remain sane while imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto? Was it possible to escape? Readers will meet some Christian Poles who did help, and will be touched by the hardship of those slaving on German farms in Lorraine where Irena and her sister hid and labored. It was a cruel time, a time of agony, a time of tears, a time of pain. It was a time of heroic courage, a time of enormous endurance, a time of faith. Irene’s liberation by the American army in Lorraine leads her back to Poland, where she finds her parents still alive. Ultimately on in her post war journey, away from Poland, to France to Morocco, educated as a lawyer in France, and as a librarian and lawyer in the United States and eventuality to Canada, where at Queens University in Kingston Ontario, her bi-lingual and bi-legal education proved to be a desired asset . She was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1966, to practice before the United States Supreme Court in 1970, and to the Law Society of Upper Canada (Ontario Bar) in 1985. She spent the last two decades of her professional career as a Professor of Law and Law Librarian at Queen’s University, Faculty of Law, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, married to Gerard Bessette, a well known and much prized French-Canadian writer and teacher. In honoring her service, this is what Queens University said about her, Madame Irene (Bakowska) Bessette. A courageous survivor of terrible persecution during World War II; a published author of moving, astonishingly generous and enlightened works on her WW II tribulation; a legal scholar of a wide-world experience in Europe, Africa and North America; a patient, dedicated and wise conservator of her adopted country Canada’s legal literature; the first woman teacher at this Faculty of Law; a teacher of and guide to both of Canada’s founding legal traditions; an insightful life partner and strength to her husband Gérard Bessette a Canadian literary treasure. And life continues. Not all was lost. Her book is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and can be ordered at your local book store - see www.irenebessette.com.

Book A Kind of Magic

Download or read book A Kind of Magic written by Edna Ferber and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize winner Edna Ferber's fascinating second autobiography—a follow-up to her first, A Peculiar Treasure—in which she shares the adventures of her life from 1939 to 1963. Rather than just an autobiography, A Kind of Magic serves as a chronicle of American history from 1939-1963 through the eyes of a highly skilled and sensitive observer. A fan of the fine arts, Ferber offers intimate glimpses into the personalities of performers from James Dean to George S. Kaufman, and goes on to share her uncanny knack for having been consistently where the news of the day was breaking. She was in Washington the day President Roosevelt died, in London when the 8th Air Force launched its first long-range daylight raids, at Buchenwald and Nordhausen shortly after their liberation, and—more happily—in Paris on V.E. Day and in New York on V.J. Day. In these pages she recaptures that black-and-white insanity of that war and all wars, as well as the stifling, post-war complecency which gripped America at the time.

Book The Life She Wished to Live A Biography of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings author of The Yearling

Download or read book The Life She Wished to Live A Biography of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings author of The Yearling written by Ann McCutchan and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and engaging biography of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of the beloved classic The Yearling. Washington, DC, born and Wisconsin educated, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was an unlikely author of a coming-of-age novel about a poor central Florida child and his pet fawn—much less one that has become synonymous with Florida literature writ large. Rawlings was a tough, ambitious, and independent woman who refused the conventions of her early-twentieth-century upbringing. Determined to forge a literary career beyond those limitations, she found her voice in the remote, hardscrabble life of Cross Creek, Florida. There, Rawlings purchased a commercial orange grove and discovered a fascinating world out of which to write—and a dialect of the poor, swampland community that the literary world had yet to hear. She employed her sensitive eye, sharp ear for dialogue, and philosophical spirit to bring to life this unknown corner of America in vivid, tender detail, a feat that earned her the Pulitzer Prize in 1938. Her accomplishments came at a price: a failed first marriage, financial instability, a contentious libel suit, alcoholism, and physical and emotional upheaval. With intimate access to Rawlings’s correspondence and revealing early writings, Ann McCutchan uncovers a larger-than-life woman who writes passionately and with verve, whose emotions change on a dime, and who drinks to excess, smokes, swears, and even occasionally joins in on an alligator hunt. The Life She Wished to Live paints a lively portrait of Rawlings, her contemporaries—including her legendary editor, Maxwell Perkins, and friends Zora Neale Hurston, Ernest Hemingway, and F. Scott Fitzgerald—and the Florida landscape and people that inspired her.

Book Hitler Downfall

Download or read book Hitler Downfall written by Volker Ullrich and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting account of the dictator’s final years, when he got the war he wanted but led his nation, the world, and himself to catastrophe—from the author of Hitler: Ascent “Skillfully conceived and utterly engrossing.” —The New York Times Book Review In the summer of 1939, Hitler was at the zenith of his power. Having consolidated political control in Germany, he was at the helm of a newly restored major world power, and now perfectly positioned to realize his lifelong ambition: to help the German people flourish and to exterminate those who stood in the way. Beginning a war allowed Hitler to take his ideological obsessions to unthinkable extremes, including the mass genocide of millions, which was conducted not only with the aid of the SS, but with the full knowledge of German leadership. Yet despite a series of stunning initial triumphs, Hitler’s fateful decision to invade the Soviet Union in 1941 turned the tide of the war in favor of the Allies. Now, Volker Ullrich, author of Hitler: Ascent 1889–1939, offers fascinating new insight into Hitler’s character and personality. He vividly portrays the insecurity, obsession with minutiae, and narcissistic penchant for gambling that led Hitler to overrule his subordinates and then blame them for his failures. When he ultimately realized the war was not winnable, Hitler embarked on the annihilation of Germany itself in order to punish the people who he believed had failed to hand him victory. A masterful and riveting account of a spectacular downfall, Ullrich’s rendering of Hitler’s final years is an essential addition to our understanding of the dictator and the course of the Second World War.

Book The Biography of Captain Bruce Bairnsfather

Download or read book The Biography of Captain Bruce Bairnsfather written by Major Holt and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 1990-12-31 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce Bairnsfather created one of the best-known cartoon characters of the First World War - 'Old Bill' and he drew what many consider to be the most enduring cartoon of all time - the 'Better Ole'. Reprinted due to popular demand this biography was the first to be published about the man and his work. During the First World War the contribution of Bairnsfather's work to the morale of the Nation, through laughter, is without question. Indeed these were those who thought he was the 'man who won the war'. The authors trace his life in fascinating detail. This delightful book reveals details of the man who was a compelling paradox - a desperately shy person who adored the limelight, a loyal loveable personality, ridden with suspicion, an upper class product who was more comfortable in the company of the working class man. Bairnsfather's work appears on plates, cups, jugs, mugs and pots, carmascots, ashtrays and the like - all collector's pieces. His characters appear on postcards, playing cards, cigarette card, jig-saw puzzles and during the Second World War on the noses of the daylight bombers of the American Eighth Airforce. The story is lavishly illustrated with over 150 photographs and drawings, and includes a useful section setting out the range and values of Bairnsfather memorabilia and collectables.

Book excerpt: Noike s journey begins when the Einsatzgruppen, a Nazi death squad, descends upon his hometown of Maciejow, Poland in 1942, and murders his family and thousands of their neighbors. Noike escapes deep into the Polish forests and assumes the identity of an orphaned Polish Catholic boy. Although Noike wore a cross and attended church, he could never fully hide his past. His only hope was to outlast the war and outwit his enemies. "Ginsburg eluded almost certain death multiple times over the course of many close-call years. 'That's what makes his story unique that he was so very young and so very resourceful, ' says Dr. Rosanna Gatens, director of Florida Atlantic University's Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education." The Palm Beach Post "Some hidden children, such as Leon Ginsburg, were orphaned early and had no other adult to take care of them. But somehow these remarkable children were able to find adult strength in themselves and make it. Like the late author Jerzy Kosinski's young hero in The Painted Bird, Leon is one who instinctively made the right split-second decisions that saved his life, not just once but numerous times." The Hidden Children, by Jane Marks (Ballantine, 1993) Young Leon Ginsburg sat hiding in a boarded-up wall as, a few feet away, Ukrainian police bayoneted and dragged away his mother, who was hiding under bedding. Later, while out looking for food, Ginsburg escaped from a suspicious teen-ager by sticking his hand into his shirt and pretending he had a gun. The Houston Chronicle on The Hidden Children "One of the most moving stories...is that of Leon Ginsburg. Orphaned by 1942, he spent several silent, hungry years in Poland as a little boy on the run. His indomitable spirit enabled him to make several split-second decisions that literally saved his life. Today he is a happily married man and grandfather." The Economist on The Hidden Children

Book The Philosopher s Autobiography

Download or read book The Philosopher s Autobiography written by Shlomit C. Schuster and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-01-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the ages philosophers have examined their own lives in an attempt both to find some meaning and to explain the roots of their philosophical perspectives. This volume is an introduction to philosophical autobiography, a rich but hitherto ignored literary genre that questions the self, its social context, and existence in general. The author analyzes representative narratives from antiquity to postmodernity, focusing in particular on three case studies: the autobiographies of St. Augustine, Rousseau, and Sartre. Through the study of these exemplary texts, philosophical reflection on the self emerges as a valid alternative to Freudian psychoanalysis and as a way of promoting self-renewal and change.
