Book Memoirs Stories from a Life Enjoyed Living

Download or read book Memoirs Stories from a Life Enjoyed Living written by Jim Davis and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jim Davis, through stories of his remarkable career as U.S. Naval officer, international trial lawyer and Federal trial judge, provides rare insight and humor to exotic happenings on the high seas and in America’s courtrooms. All stems from his improbable youthful achievements . . . appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy faculty at age 23 and to the Federal bench in Washington, D.C. at age 32, youngest ever to the U.S. Court of Claims. He tells of chasing Soviet nuclear submarines from New York to the North Sea, learning the Navy’s ways while working with fellow-officer Ross Perot (America’s computer wunderkind in the late 1950s), navigating the St. Lawrence seaway in 1957 on an aircraft carrier, the first and largest ship to do so, and entering Havana, Cuba in 1957 under threat of Castro’s expanding revolution. In the courtroom, he tangled with the CIA over recovery of a Soviet submarine from the Pacific Ocean floor, prevented China from exporting illegally millions of TV sets to the U.S. after stealing U.S. patents, protected Texas Instruments’ multi-billion dollar position in computer chip production from invasion by Japan and Korea, and thwarted piracy by Mexican and Chinese pirates of National Geographic Society’s world famous yellow-bordered Geographic magazine. As trial judge, he decided a $211 million patent case, second largest in U.S. history, and decided what Time Magazine called the “most significant copyright case of the 20th century,” copyright’s struggle with the Xerox machine. And much more. A great read!

Book Enjoying the Interval Murray Enkin A Life

Download or read book Enjoying the Interval Murray Enkin A Life written by Kerreen M. Reiger and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone who has enjoyed the great happiness and intimacy of a family-centred birth, and any midwife or health professional who has attended one, owes a debt of gratitude to internationally known Canadian doctor, researcher, and medical reformer, Murray Enkin. Enjoying the Interval takes on the fascinating, joyful task of exploring Dr Enkin’s identity and achievements along with the social context that shaped them. It offers a critical assessment of the ongoing challenges in maternity care, the field to which Enkin devoted his life, but it is also the story of an immigrant Jewish family's contribution to Canadian society and the wider world. Using archival sources and interviews, the book traces Enkin’s story from his birth in 1924; through his early young married life, education, and medical practice; to his passionate championing of the emerging childbirth reform movement and its influence. Interweaving the personal and professional to provide insight into the man, the times and the causes that shaped him, it not only recognises Enkin’s distinctive social contribution but also that of his family and colleagues. It chronicles the highly personable Enkin’s days as a med student awestruck by the courage and beauty of women in labour to his joyful life as a husband and father, to his international impact as a practitioner, academic and researcher, and as an inveterate traveller. Scholarly, yet accessible, it will prove of interest to professional and lay readers alike. Enjoying the Interval is an account of an important social movement that shook the medical establishment, but it’s also a love story, a travelogue, and an entertaining portrait of a complex man who helped to change the world for the better.

Download or read book She Who Changes written by C. Christ and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we re-imagine divine power as deeply related to the changing world? Can we re-imagine the creation of the world as an ongoing process of co-creation in which every individual from particles of atoms to human beings plays a part? Can we re-imagine Goddess/God as the most relational of all relational beings? Can we re-imagine the world as the body of Goddess/God? If we can, then we can understand the deeper meaning of female images of divine power, including Goddess, God-She, Sophia, and Shekhina. Many traditional understandings of divine power begin with thinly disguised rejections of the female body and connection to the natural world. Women theologians from Jewish, Christian, Goddess, and other traditions are re-imagining divine and human power as embodied, embedded in a changing world, and deeply related to all beings in the web of life. Drawing on the work of process philosopher Charles Hartshorne - whose insights deserve a wider hearing - Carol P. Christ offers intellectual foundations for deeply held feelings about the meanings of female images of divine power. Her gift is the ability to make complex ideas seem simple and radically new ideas seem familiar. This book is addressed to everyone who has ever wondered about the implications of re-imagining God as female.

Book Joseph Severn A Life

Download or read book Joseph Severn A Life written by Sue Brown and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of Joseph Severn (1793-1879), the best known but most controversial of Keats's friends, is based on a mass of newly discovered information, much of it still in private hands. Severn accompanied the dying Keats to Italy, nursed him in Rome and reported on his last weeks there in a famous series of moving letters. After Keats's death in relative obscurity, Severn pressed hard for an early biography and a more fitting memorial in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome. In the nineteenth century Severn's friendship with Keats was seen as a model of devoted masculine companionship and he was reburied by popular acclaim next to Keats in 1882. In the twentieth century, by contrast, he was denigrated as an unreliable, self-promoting witness. Sue Brown's book fills a major gap in studies of Keats and his circle. It reassesses Severn's character, friendship with Keats, and influence on the posthumous development of the poet's fame and provides new information on Keats's death. The significance of Severn's artistic career has previously been downplayed. This book offers the first full assessment of his work and of his turbulent spell as British Consul in Rome from 1860 to 1871. Keats was not Severn's only famous friend. For most of his adult life Severn was at the heart of the large, lively British community in Rome welcoming amongst others Gladstone, who became his most important patron, Ruskin, Walter Scott, Wordsworth, Turner, Samuel Palmer, David Wilkie, and many more. He maintained long friendships with Leigh Hunt, Mary Shelley, Charles Eastlake, Richard Monckton Milnes, amongst others, and enjoyed a rich family life.
