Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Reader: Nature Study and Easy Stories for Sight Reading During the First Year in Latin During the first year pupils must form the habit of reading Latin. If we had the material, they might learn to read Latin as they learned to read English, by reading. What can be done to get this material? Of what should this material consist? We are preparing them to read authors. Our own experience has often shown us that the first few pages of a new book seem difficult usually the most difficult of the whole book and so much so that we might say of many books: Well begun is half done. The majority of pupils who read much Latin, read Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil. Their first attack upon each of these authors is nearly always made upon the first pages of the Gallic War, Book I or Book II, the First Oration against Catiline, and the First Book of the Eneid. Their reading during the first year can be made to contain every important word and every form and construction occurring in those few pages. During the first year's work, students of Latin are obliged to read hun dreds and even thousands of sentences illustrating Latin forms and syntax. Those sentences are for the most part fragments of the sentences of Caesar and other Latin authors and are usually arranged so as to illustrate and review the use of certain constructions with regularity and precision. The plan for beginning Latin embodied in Primer and Reader differs from others most fundamentally, per haps, in that it concentrates so definitely upon the problem of developing the student's power to read Latin; and it is quite in harmony with that general design that this second book is called a Reader, and that in it the latin-english exercises are massed at one point, with notes at the foot of the page. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Via Latina: An Easy Latin Reader Both these errors are glanced at in the report of the Latin Conference to the Committee of Ten in 1892. In recommending a lengthening of the Latin preparatory course, the Conference says: The aggregate Of one thousand or twelve hundred hours is much below the average in the schools Of England, France, and Germany. The explanation Of the undeniable fact that, in the coun tries just named, Latin has been more successfully employed than with us as an instrument for training the mind to habits Of intellectual conscientiousness, patience, discrimination, and thoroughness, in a word, to habits Of clear and sound thinking, - doubtless lies partly in the more liberal allowance of time. Book An English Grammar and Reading Book

Download or read book An English Grammar and Reading Book written by Osborne William Tancock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An English Grammar and Reading Book: For Lower Forms in Classical Schools This little book is intended to help those who are trying to solve. The problem of teaching English systematically in classical schools. My object has been to supply an English grammar for lower forms which shall teach a boy to apply grammatical terms and explanations to his own language, and which may be learnt by the side of his Latin grammar with little additional trouble; and to supply a reading book which shall be to the study of English what a Latin Delectus is to the study of Latin. The Glossary explains the meaning and derivation of every word in the Extracts. I believe that a boy who has worked fairly through the book will have laid the foundation of an accurate knowledge of the structure of his mother tongue, and its relation to kindred languages, and will have learned to distinguish between its two great divisions of words - the words of Teutonic, and those of Latin origin. I have not attempted to teach everything, or to supply the place of advanced grammars; but I have great hope that those who use it will have nothing to unlearn when they come to use larger grammars, and to extend their study of English to the earlier stages of the language.
