Book Hard Rock Mine Reclamation

Download or read book Hard Rock Mine Reclamation written by Bruno Bussière and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hard rock mines have significant effects on the territories where they operate, through both infrastructure construction as well as resource use. Due to their extractive activities, these mines store large quantities of wastes at the surface, which can be both physically and chemically unstable. Reclamation aims to return a mine site to a satisfactory state, meaning that the site should not threaten human health or security, should not generate in the long term any contaminant that could significantly affect the surrounding environment, and should be aesthetically acceptable to communities. This book focuses on the reclamation of waste storage areas, which constitute the main source of pollution during and after mine operations, and especially issues with acid mine drainage and neutral contaminated drainage. Features: Provides fundamental information and describes practical methods to reclaim mine-waste facilities Compares the different methods and illustrates their application at sites through case studies Identifies new reclamation issues and proposes solutions to address them Presents existing and new technologies to reclaim mine waste disposal areas from hard rock mines in different climatic conditions Integrates reclamation into mine operations and long term performance of techniques used through an interdisciplinary approach With mine site reclamation a young and still emerging science, the training needs for professionals and students working in this field are huge. This book is written from an engineering point of view and in it the authors identify new reclamation issues and propose well-tested as well as innovative approaches to addressing them. Students in graduate programs focused on mines and the environment as well as professionals already working in departments related to mine site reclamation will find this book to be a valuable and essential resource.

Book Spoil to Soil Mine Site Rehabilitation and Revegetation

Download or read book Spoil to Soil Mine Site Rehabilitation and Revegetation written by N.S. Bolan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spoil to Soil: Mine Site Rehabilitation and Revegetation presents both fundamental and practical aspects of remediation and revegetation of mine sites. Through three major themes, it examines characterization of mine site spoils; remediation of chemical, physical and biological constraints of mine site spoils, including post mine-site land-use practices; and revegetation of remediated mine site spoils. Each theme includes chapters featuring case studies involving mine sites around the world. The final section focuses specifically on case studies with successful mine site rehabilitation. The book provides a narrative of how inert spoil can be converted to live soil. Instructive illustrations show mine sites before and after rehabilitation. The purpose of this book is to provide students, scientists, and professional personnel in the mining industry sensible, science-based information needed to rehabilitate sustainably areas disturbed by mining activities. This book is suitable for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in environmental, earth, and soil sciences; environmental and soil scientists; and mine site environmental engineers and regulators.

Book Transport of Metals from Mine Tailings Impoundments and Release to Surface Waters

Download or read book Transport of Metals from Mine Tailings Impoundments and Release to Surface Waters written by Carol Jane Ptacek and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There are over 10,000 abandoned mine sites in Canada which have the potential to release unacceptable concentrations of metals to groundwater and surface waters for many decades to centuries after mining activities cease. When mine wastes are exposed to the atmosphere, the sulfide minerals in the waste oxidize and release acid and metals to the environment. The release can take place over several decades to many centuries. The timing and duration of peak discharges vary from site to site, depending on the rate and extent of sulfide oxidation, acid neutralization, metal attenuation and release reactions, the groundwater velocity and length of the groundwater flow path. Many oxyanion forming elements such as arsenic, behave quite differently than cation-forming metals, because of their higher mobility under near-neutral pH conditions. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the geochemical, hydrogeological and microbiological mechanisms controlling the long-term release of (H+), sulfate (S04), aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) from mine waste sites"--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's best practice in environmental mine-waste management requires a thorough understanding of the wastes produced. The knowledge of mine wastes represents a new interdisciplinary science and this book provides an introductory, descriptive and analytic overview of the wastes produced in the mineral industry. It describes the characterization, prediction, monitoring, disposal and treatment as well as environmental impacts. Intended for undergraduate courses, it systematically builds the reader’s understanding and knowledge of the wastes produced, their physical and chemical characteristics, and how to deal responsibly with them on a short and long-term basis. The text employs 22 case studies spanning the world’s mineral industry that elucidate best practice and specific challenges in mine-waste management and site rehabilitation.
