This fifth volume of the acclaimed series covers the history of the continent from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the close of the eighteenth century in which two themes emerge: first, the continuing internal evolution of the states and cultures of Africa during this period second, the increasing involvement of Africa in external trade--with major but unforeseen consequences for the whole world. In North Africa, we see the Ottomans conquer Egypt. South of the Sahara, some of the larger, older states collapse, and new power bases emerge. Traditional religions continue to coexist with both Christianity (suffering setbacks) and Islam (in the ascendancy). Along the coast, particularly of West Africa, Europeans establish a trading network which, with the development of New World plantation agriculture, becomes the focus of the international slave trade. The immediate consequences of this trade for Africa are explored, and it is argued that the long-term global consequences include the foundation of the present world-economy with all its built-in inequalities.

Malade et abandonné par ses porteurs, il perdit alors totalement contact avec son pays d'origine. Il se retira à Ujiji, sur les bords du lac Tanganyika, l'Europe le pensant perdu à tout jamais. En 1869, le rédacteur en chef du New York Herald envoie Henry Stanley en Afrique équatoriale, avec pour mission de retrouver David Livingstone. Retardé par d'autres affaires, ce n'est que le 6 janvier 1871 que Stanley atteint l'île de Zanzibar près de la côte orientale de l'Afrique. Il rejoint le continent et part pour l'intérieur le 21 mars, avec environ 200 hommes. Le 10 novembre de cette même année, il retrouve Livingstone, souffrant, à Ujiji, une localité proche du lac Tanganyika, Cette réussite vaudra à Stanley une renommée internationale. Le récit de ce sauvetage présenté dans cet ouvrage est tiré de la revue « Le Tour du Monde » de 1873 et accompagné d'une soixantaine de gravures.

Conceiving of the body as the center of analysis, a catalyst for social action, and as a conduit for the social construction of reality, Covington-Ward focuses on specific flash points in the last ninety years of Congo's troubled history, when embodied performance was used to stake political claims, foster dissent, and enforce power. In the 1920s Simon Kimbangu started a Christian prophetic movement based on spirit-induced trembling, which swept through the Lower Congo, subverting Belgian colonial authority. Following independence, dictator Mobutu Sese Seko required citizens to dance and sing nationalist songs daily as a means of maintaining political control. More recently, embodied performance has again stoked reform, as nationalist groups such as Bundu dia Kongo advocate for a return to precolonial religious practices and non-Western gestures such as traditional greetings. In exploring these embodied expressions of Congolese agency, Covington-Ward provides a framework for understanding how embodied practices transmit social values, identities, and cultural history throughout Africa and the diaspora.
