Book excerpt: The Late Romantic Era treats the period bounded by the 1848 revolutions and the outbreak of World War I. It examines several musical dimensions of the bourgeois cultural ascendancy of the second half of the 19th century - the growth of independent institutions of music-making, the consolidation of a standard classical repertory and the emergence of increasingly specific repertories of popular music, professional and amateur. Single chapters on particular countries or regions are framed by pairs of chapters on Vienna, Paris and the German cities. In an opening chapter Dr Samson places the later geographical surveys within a thematic context which embraces social and economic change, political ideology and the climate of ideas.

Book Impressionists and Politics

Download or read book Impressionists and Politics written by Philip Nord and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impressionists and Politics is an accessible introduction to the current debates about Impressionism. Was the artistic movement really radical and innovative? Is the term "Impressionism" itself an adequate characterization of the movement of painters and critics that took the mid-nineteenth century Paris art world by storm? By providing an historical background and context, the book places the Impressionists' roots in wider social and economic transformations and explains its militancy, both aesthetic and political. Impressionists and Politics is a concise history of the movement, from its youthful inception in the 1860s, through to its final years of recognition and then crisis.

Book The Politics of Musical Identity

Download or read book The Politics of Musical Identity written by Annegret Fauser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the way in which composers, performers, and critics shaped individual and collective identities in music from Europe and the United States from the 1860s to the 1950s. Selected essays and articles engage with works and their reception by Richard Wagner, Georges Bizet (in an American incarnation), Lili and Nadia Boulanger, William Grant Still, and Aaron Copland, and with performers such as Wanda Landowska and even Marilyn Monroe. Ranging in context from the opera house through the concert hall to the salon, and from establishment cultures to counter-cultural products, the main focus is how music permits new ways of considering issues of nationality, class, race, and gender. These essays - three presented for the first time in English translation - reflect the work in both musical and cultural studies of a distinguished scholar whose international career spans the Atlantic and beyond.

Book Emile Zola

Download or read book Emile Zola written by Alan Schom and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ch. 16 (pp. 146-152), "Anti-Semite évolué", relates that Zola used antisemitic stereotypes in one of his early plays, and that his novel "L'Argent" (1891), about rivalry between Jews and Christians in the Paris stock exchange, described the control of the financial world by an international Jewish conspiracy, and portrayed Jews as alien and ugly. However, by 1896 Zola came to oppose the antisemitic movement and its fanatic xenophobia and advocated assimilation of the Jews. Deals, also, with his involvement in the Dreyfus Affair, his articles in "Le Figaro" in 1897 and his famous letter "J'accuse", exposing the conspiracy by the Army and the War Office, which led to violent antisemitic demonstrations against him. Condemned for defamation, Zola fled to England and returned when Dreyfus was retried. In the novel "Vérité" (1903) he exposed the machinations of the Catholic Church and state authorities in the Affair in a story about a Jew falsely accused of murder. Suggests that Zola's death in 1902 was caused by anti-Dreyfusards.
