All she wants is an ordinary life A cruel past left Hannah Gray with one simple longing—normalcy. Normal ladies ride and waltz without fear. They have safe, normal husbands to give them safe, normal kisses. After years of healing, she’s ready to find “normal” for herself, and Lady Wallingham’s house party is the perfect place to begin. All he wants is to forget her Bow Street runner Jonas Hawthorn vowed never to see the cold, haughty Miss Gray again. A year ago, he nearly died trying to protect her, only to be dismissed like a lowly servant. But soon, he’ll have land and servants of his own. He just has to locate an old dowager’s stolen goods, collect his prize, and avoid the beauty who haunts him like a moonlit sky. All it takes is a single kiss He never meant to touch her. She never meant to reveal the truth. But once he’s tasted the heat and longing hidden beneath her icy mask, the only mystery this Bow Street man burns to solve is how a roguish wolf might win the elusive Miss Gray for himself.

Their goal: to spend every cent of their mustering out money in a party of a lifetime. And they’ll get more than they bargained for: because when they land, it is July 1967—in a time that would come to be known as “The Summer of Love.” It’s a place and time where each young man will have to confront the ghosts who followed them home from the jungles of Vietnam and contemplate a future none of them had imagined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In the style of the great bards, Gerald Facciani’s thought-provoking poems evoke smiles, melancholy, and most certainly introspection. With emotions at times thinly veiled and creativity at times fully revealed, this is love, loss, and life at its best.” - Suzanne Giesemann Author of Messages of Hope and Wolf's Message. "Gerald Facciani's book Poetic Treasures from the Soul (vol.2) is a delightful compendium of his best lyric verse. A felicitous combination of tradition and innovation, of classical form and everyday concerns, his poems are always easy to approach -- yet always ask for deeper reflection. Like good music, they linger in the mind and in the heart.." - Stefania de Kenessey, Professor of Music at The New School, New York City. "Mr. Facciani writes from the heart, and what a pleasure to read contemporary sonnets about adult love! This collection will be enjoyed by anyone with an open spirit and ready to raise a glass to love." - Stanley Wilson, Writer/Producer

Download or read book Brutal Mercy written by Emily Kimelman and published by Emily Kimelman. This book was released on with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dog’s howls echo the mechanical whine of the sirens blaring from the speakers. The sounds undulate, rising and falling like the jungle-draped topography around us. The airfield we stand on is a swath of ochre in a sea of riotous green—the sky above a cerulean dome hazed in tremulous clouds. Sunlight beats through them, baking the dirt, mixing with the moisture of the jungle and wrapping itself around us in a heavy, sweaty embrace. My arms tighten around my son. Frank presses his snout to James’s foot, a low whine escaping as he looks up at me. Nila joins with Blue circling us as though forming a defensive line. They know we are in danger but don’t know from what. The dogs in the jungle, trained to protect the compound’s perimeter, continue to howl even as the sirens wind down. Blue leads us to the jungle path. Darkness closes in around us, the air stifling and humidity thick. Over the cascading insect orchestra, a resonating hum grows louder. James looks up at the canopy above us. “Vroom?” He asks. “Vroom,” I agree, keeping my focus on the winding path. Roots criss-cross the dirt. Big wet leaves and spidery vines encroach, tugging at my clothing as if to stop me from entering. Sweat slides down my spine under my shirt. Nila jogs ahead, taking the lead, her nose to the ground while Blue stays by my side and Frank behind us—a train of people and dogs. A pack moving through the jungle. A formidable force. A bird squawks loudly, jerking James’s attention. He pulls his arms from around my neck to clap. The drone’s mechanical hum grows louder. Nila stops, turning her head to the sky, nostrils flaring, trying to find its scent. I crane my neck. Through the thick foliage the sky is just a few flashes of blue. Three shadows darken the diamonds of light cascading to the jungle floor, and flashes of white glint above us. No bombs drop. No bullets rain. Yet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic fictionalised biography of the enigmatic Olympic athlete Jack Lovelock. Jack Lovelock has been called the first modern athlete. He became famous internationally when he broke the world record to take the gold medal in the 1500 metres event at the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936. His unexpected victory against 'the greatest field of milers ever assembled' has all the hallmarks of a great discovery. A medical student, he treated his body as a human laboratory. Yet a mystery remains. In 1949 a few days before his 40th birthday, Jack Lovelock was killed when he fell beneath a train in New York. The enigma of his death becomes the key to McNeish's quest for the 'real' Lovelock - a man who in the author's words 'covered his traces as adroitly as he ran'. Lovelock, based on wide research but written as a fictional diary, was nominated for the 1986 Booker Prize. This edition includes the 'Berlin Diary', McNeish's journal written in Germany while researching the novel and an afterword, which contains a sobering commentary on Lovelock's death.
