Book Black Hole Survival Guide

Download or read book Black Hole Survival Guide written by Janna Levin and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Black Hole Blues and Other Songs from Outer Space—an authoritative and accessible guide to the most alluring and challenging phenomena of contemporary science. "[Levin will] take you on a safe black hole trip, an exciting travel story enjoyed from your chair’s event horizon.” —Boston Globe Through her writing, astrophysicist Janna Levin has focused on making the science she studies not just comprehensible but also, and perhaps more important, intriguing to the nonscientist. In this book, she helps us to understand and find delight in the black hole—perhaps the most opaque theoretical construct ever imagined by physicists—illustrated with original artwork by American painter and photographer Lia Halloran. Levin takes us on an evocative exploration of black holes, provoking us to imagine the visceral experience of a black hole encounter. She reveals the influence of black holes as they populate the universe, sculpt galaxies, and even infuse the whole expanse of reality that we inhabit. Lively, engaging, and utterly unique, Black Hole Survival Guide is not just informative—it is, as well, a wonderful read from first to last.

Download or read book Beautiful Black Holes For Kids written by K. Bennett and published by Mendon Cottage Books. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction Space, the final frontier… to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life, and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before. ~ Gene Roddenberry *** The universe is full of surprises! We can find amazing things like galaxies, planets, comets, asteroids, moons, meteorites, and more! One of the strangest objects we can find in space is called a… black hole. Have you ever heard of black holes? What do you know about them? Let’s learn more! Black holes are dark areas in space with strong gravity. Not all black holes are black and we cannot see them, but we know they are there. How do we know they exist even though we can’t see them? Scientists study the things that happen around a black hole, and that tells them a black hole is there. The force of a black hole is so strong light cannot escape. Do you know what happens to light when it gets near a black hole? Strong gravity pulls light and everything else into the center. It is so strong that nothing escapes the powerful force, and everything falls in! Black holes come in lots of different sizes. Some are big, and some are small. Some black holes are so big; they are called supermassive black holes. That’s a big, big hole! Black holes affect not only space but time too. How so? Did you know time changes when you get near a black hole? Yes, it does! This is because of Einstein’s theory of relativity. Let’s find out how black holes work and what else we can learn about this mysterious force in the universe!

How does a black hole form? What is his fate? How did scientists manage to 'observe' these celestial bodies which, by definition, cannot be seen? Book Light in the Darkness

Download or read book Light in the Darkness written by Heino Falcke and published by Wildfire. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As featured in THE EDGE OF ALL WE KNOW - the new Netflix documentary about Black HolesFor readers of Stephen Hawking, a fascinating account of the universe from the perspective of world-leading astrophysicist Heino Falcke, who took the first ever picture of a black hole.10th April 2019: a global sensation. Heino Falcke, a man "working at the boundaries of his discipline and therefore at the limits of the universe" had used a network of telescopes spanning the entire planet to take the first picture of a black hole.Light in the Darkness examines how mankind has always looked to the skies, mapping the journey from millennia ago when we turned our gaze to the heavens, to modern astrophysics. Heino Falcke and Jorg Romer entertainingly and compellingly chart the breakthrough research of Falcke's team, an unprecedented global community of international colleagues developing a telescope complex enough to look directly into a black hole - a hole where light vanishes, and time stops. What does this development mean? Is this the beginning of a new physics? What can we learn from this about God, the world, and ourselves? For Falcke, astrophysics and metaphysics, science and faith, do not exclude one another. Black Hole is both a plea for curiosity and humility; it's interested in both what we know, and the mysteries that remain unsolved.

Book Supermassive Black Hole

Download or read book Supermassive Black Hole written by Celestial Angell and published by Dedona Publishing. This book was released on with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A black hole is a region in space where the gravitational pull is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape from it. This occurs when a massive amount of matter is compressed into a very small area, creating a powerful gravitational field. Black holes form through various processes that involve the collapse of massive astronomical objects and the merging of smaller black holes. One primary method is the stellar collapse. Stars, during their lifecycle, fuse hydrogen into helium in their cores. When the hydrogen is depleted, they begin fusing heavier elements until iron is produced. For stars more than 20 times the mass of the Sun, the end of this fusion process leads to a supernova explosion. The core of the star collapses rapidly due to gravity, and if the core's mass is sufficiently large (typically more than about three times the mass of the Sun), it will continue collapsing into a singularity, forming a stellar-mass black hole. Another way black holes can form is through accretion and growth. A compact object like a neutron star or a white dwarf can accumulate matter from a companion star or its surroundings. As this matter accumulates, the mass of the compact object increases, and it may eventually reach a critical mass where it collapses into a black hole.
