Book excerpt: The author demonstrates that the Book of Mormon is a native Mesoamerican book (or codex) that exhibits what one would expect of a historical document produced in the context of ancient Mesoamerican civilization. He also shows that scholars' discoveries about Mesoamerica and the contents of the Nephite record are clearly related, listing more than 400 points where the Book of Mormon text corresponds to characteristic Mesoamerican situations, statements, allusions, and history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from 2000 Changes in the Book of Mormon What makes me the more anxious to write my views is because I have been unable to satisfy myself that my stand is wrong, and no person With whom I have been able to converse upon the subject has been able to show me the fallacy in my argument. It may exist for all that, and there may be plenty of people able to help me. The publica tion of this little work will put them inpossession of one of my difficulties, which if they can remove, will give me great hope that the others, may be re moved. If truth is against me I most sincerely hope some person with the spirit of sympathy burning deep in his bosom will step forward and save another soul unto Christ. Be assured, if you come with reason you will be considered, but do not ask me to lay aside my mind and take that of any other person. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Witnesses for God, Vol. 2 of 3: II, the Book of Mormon The following work was begun twenty-two years ago, in England, when the author was in that land on a Mission, as assistant Editor of the Latter-day Saints Millennial Star. It was the author's design then to make the treatise on the Book of Mormon the first volume under the general title N ew Witnesses for God; but after some progress in col leeting and arranging the materials had been made, the thought occurred to him that the Prophet Joseph Smith in chronological order, if not in importance, preceded the Book of Mormon in the introduction of God's Witnesses in this last and great dispensation. The materials of this work therefore, so far as they had been collected, were laid aside and work began on the treatise of Joseph Smith as a Witness for God; which however, because of many other demands upon the author 5 time, was not published until 1895. Meantime work was continued from time to time upon the treatise of the Book of Mormon; and in 1903-4 - 5, the materials were used, substantially as in their present form, as Manuals for the Senior Classes of the Young Men's Mutual Improvement Associations. The work has under gone a thorough revision at the hands of the author, and is now to take the place in his writings designed for it so long ago. Book Understanding the Book of Mormon

Download or read book Understanding the Book of Mormon written by Grant Hardy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain once derided the Book of Mormon as "chloroform in print." Long and complicated, written in the language of the King James version of the Bible, it boggles the minds of many. Yet it is unquestionably one of the most influential books ever written. With over 140 million copies in print, it is a central text of one of the largest and fastest-growing faiths in the world. And, Grant Hardy shows, it's far from the coma-inducing doorstop caricatured by Twain. In Understanding the Book of Mormon, Hardy offers the first comprehensive analysis of the work's narrative structure in its 180 year history. Unlike virtually all other recent world scriptures, the Book of Mormon presents itself as an integrated narrative rather than a series of doctrinal expositions, moral injunctions, or devotional hymns. Hardy takes readers through its characters, events, and ideas, as he explores the story and its messages. He identifies the book's literary techniques, such as characterization, embedded documents, allusions, and parallel narratives. Whether Joseph Smith is regarded as author or translator, it's noteworthy that he never speaks in his own voice; rather, he mediates nearly everything through the narrators Nephi, Mormon, and Moroni. Hardy shows how each has a distinctive voice, and all are woven into an integral whole. As with any scripture, the contending views of the Book of Mormon can seem irreconcilable. For believers, it is an actual historical document, transmitted from ancient America. For nonbelievers, it is the work of a nineteenth-century farmer from upstate New York. Hardy transcends this intractable conflict by offering a literary approach, one appropriate to both history and fiction. Regardless of whether readers are interested in American history, literature, comparative religion, or even salvation, he writes, the book can best be read if we examine the text on its own terms.

Book An Address to All Believers in Christ

Download or read book An Address to All Believers in Christ written by David Whitmer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address to All Believers in Christ: By a Witness to the Divine Autlientieity of the Book of Mormon Dear Reader: Part first of this pamphlet is a brief address to those who have not read the Book of Mormon, and who are not conversant with the denominations that believe in that book. Part second is an address to all believers in the Book of Mormon. There are three distinct denominations that believe the Book of Mormon to be the Word of God: First: The Church of Christ. Second: The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Third: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The last named is the church in Salt Lake City; they believe in the doctrine of polygamy, while the two first named churches do not believe in that doctrine. I am an elder in "the Church of Christ." We believe in the doctrine of Christ as it is taught in the New Testament and the Book of Mormon, the same gospel being taught in both these books. The Bible being the sacred record of the Jews who inhabited the eastern continent: the Book of Mormon being the sacred record of the Nephites (descendants of Joseph, the son of Jacob), who inhabited the western continent, or this land of America. The Indians are the remnant of that people, who drifted into unbelief and darkness about 350 years after Christ appeared to them and established his church among them, after finishing his mission at Jerusalem. We believe in faith in Christ, remittance and baptism for the remission of sins, and the gift of the Holy Ghost. We believe in the laying on of hands as it was practiced in the days of the Apostles. We believe in the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. We also believe in the Words of Christ when he said, "These signs shall follow them that believe." Our belief concerning the order of offices in the church, etc., will be found in Part Second of this pamphlet. The Church of Christ holds to the original doctrine and order that was first established upon the teachings of Christ in the written word, in 1829, when the Lord set his hand the second time to establish the true gospel upon the earth and recover his people, which is in fulfillment of the prophecies in the Bible. Wedenounce the doctrine of polygamy and spiritual wifeism. It is a great evil, shocking to the moral sense, and the more so because practiced in the name of Religion. It is of man and not of God, and is especially forbidden in the Book of Mormon itself in these words. "Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord. Book The Book of Mormon on Trial

Download or read book The Book of Mormon on Trial written by Walter J. Haworth and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Mormon on Trial: Two Sermon Lectures For some time an individual styling himself an "Evangelist" has been going around this district, giving free readings from a Book written against the Church by Elder D. H. Bays of the "Campbellites." This person has persistently bored many of the Church members and those interested in our work by reading (in their own homes) from this book, sometimes two and three hours at a time. When challenged to debate the issue between us, he declined evidently preferring the under-hand method of getting in his work, without giving us a fair chance of presenting the other side of the question. Having secured a copy of Mr. Bays' book we shall endeavour to present as fully as possible, in two lectures, the other side of the question. The author of the book we have referred to charges the Book of Mormon with "fraud," "imposition." Very well, we will put it upon its trial on those charges. This audience shall be the jury, and we shall endeavour to faithfully place the evidence of both sides fairly before you. All that we ask is that for the present you lay aside all bias, and refrain from judging "according to the appearance," but when both sides are before you "Judge righteous judgment." (John 7: 24.) Here is a plain statement of the case taken from Mr. Bays' book, p. 26. "That the whole Mormon superstructure is founded on the Book of Mormon, no one will perhaps attempt to deny. If that book is true then the authority of the Mormon Church is established beyond the possibility of reasonable doubt." Book The Qur an Morality and Critical Reason

Download or read book The Qur an Morality and Critical Reason written by Muhammad Shahrur and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-03-15 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the work and ideas of the Syrian writer Muhammad Shahrur to the English-speaking world. Shahrur is at the moment the most innovative intellectual thinker in the Arab Middle East. Often described as the ‘Martin Luther of Islam,’ he offers a liberal, progressive reading of Islam that aims to counter the influences of religious fundamentalism and radical politics. Shahrur’s innovative interpretation of the Qur’an offers groundbreaking new ideas, based on his conviction that centuries of historical Islam, including scholarship in the traditional Islamic religious sciences, have obscured or even obliterated the Qur’an’s progressive and revolutionary message. That message is one that has endured through each period of human history in which Islam has existed, encouraging Muslims to apply the most contemporary perspective available to interpret the Qur’an’s meaning.
