Book excerpt: A tale about love, life, death, and inner transformation, A Journey to Enchantment is the story of David Noble, the novel's protagonist, discovering that Enchantment--Heaven, Nirvana, or whatever one wishes to call it--is in the here and now on the planet earth, and not off in the sky somewhere. The suspense begins when David, through his closest friend, Michael Van Hagen, is introduced to a woman who claims to be the Mother of the Universe, here to put an end to God's experiment with Man--an experiment she is convinced has failed--and start afresh with a new sub root race on a planet she will control instead of the Father, a world she plans to call Enchantment.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK “Part love story, part history, this novel is a tour de force [told] in language that soars and sears.”—More St. Petersburg, 1917. After Rasputin’s body is pulled from the icy waters of the Neva River, his eighteen-year-old daughter, Masha, is sent to live at the imperial palace with Tsar Nikolay and his family. Desperately hoping that Masha has inherited Rasputin’s healing powers, Tsarina Alexandra asks her to tend to her son, the headstrong prince Alyosha, who suffers from hemophilia. Soon after Masha arrives at the palace, the tsar is forced to abdicate, and the Bolsheviks place the royal family under house arrest. As Russia descends into civil war, Masha and Alyosha find solace in each other’s company. To escape the confinement of the palace, and to distract the prince from the pain she cannot heal, Masha tells him stories—some embellished and others entirely imagined—about Nikolay and Alexandra’s courtship, Rasputin’s exploits, and their wild and wonderful country, now on the brink of an irrevocable transformation. In the worlds of their imagination, the weak become strong, legend becomes fact, and a future that will never come to pass feels close at hand. Praise for Enchantments “A sumptuous, atmospheric account of the last days of the Romanovs from the perspective of Rasputin’s daughter, [told] with the sensuous, transporting prose that is Kathryn Harrison’s trademark.”—Jennifer Egan “[A] splendid and surprising book . . . Harrison has given us something enduring.”—The New York Times Book Review “[Harrison delivers] this oft-told moment with shocking freshness. . . . Masha re-invents our ideas of Rasputin, and the world of Nicholas and Alexandra is imbued with a glow whose fierceness is governed by the imminence of its loss.”—Los Angeles Times “A mesmerizing novel.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “Bewitching . . . Harrison sets historic facts like jewels in this intricately fashioned work of exalted empathy and imagination, a literary Fabergé egg. . . . [A] dazzling return to historical fiction.”—Booklist (starred review) Look for special features inside. Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more.

Book excerpt: The Lord of the Rings trilogy has delighted millions of fans worldwide in book and movie form. With the theatrical release of the two-part film The Hobbit slated for 2012 and 2013, attention will once again turn to J. R. R. Tolkien's classic works. In a culture where truth is relative and morality is viewed as old-fashioned, we welcome the chance to view the world through hobbit eyes: we have free will, our choices matter, and living a morally heroic life is possible. In this engaging and thought-provoking book, Tolkien expert Matthew Dickerson shows how a Christian worldview and Christian themes undergird Tolkien's Middle-earth writings and how they are fundamentally important to understanding his vision. Set against the backdrop of the Enchanted Forest of Whimsy, the story begins with Ellie discovering a shimmering envelope in her grandmother's attic, an invitation that leads her to a hidden, mystical forest. As Ellie traverses this magical realm, she meets an array of whimsical creatures, from talking animals to singing flowers, each introducing her to the wonders and secrets of the forest. Guided by Finn, a wise fox with a monocle, Ellie visits extraordinary places within the forest, like the River of Reflections, which reveals the beauty of one's soul, and the Meadow of Mirrors, where mirrors reflect one's inner strengths rather than physical appearance. The narrative beautifully interweaves elements of fantasy with heartfelt lessons on self-discovery, the value of kindness, and the power of positive belief. Throughout her journey, Ellie learns that the true magic of the forest isn't just in the enchanting experiences or the mystical creatures she meets but in the growth and insight she gains about herself and the world around her. The forest teaches her that magic is real and powerful, especially the magic that resides within one's own heart and imagination. As the story culminates, Ellie returns to her world transformed, carrying with her the profound lessons and the enchanted essence of the Forest of Whimsy. She learns to see her daily life through a lens of wonder and carries the seeds of joy and gratitude back into her community, spreading the magic further. "Ellie's Enchantment" is not only a tale of adventure and fantasy but also a profound reminder of the transformative power of kindness, courage, and belief in oneself. It's a heartwarming read that encourages children and adults alike to find and cherish the magic in everyday life.

Book Land of Enchantment

Download or read book Land of Enchantment written by Leigh Stein and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[A] thoughtful and compelling elegy to a troubled man, a broken love, and a broken dream of the west."—Leslie Jamison, New York Times bestselling author of The Empathy Exams An MSN Best Book of 2016 Set against the stark and surreal landscape of New Mexico, Land of Enchantment is a coming-of-age memoir about young love, obsession, and loss, and how a person can imprint a place in your mind forever. When Leigh Stein received a call from an unknown number in July 2011, she let it go to voice mail, assuming it would be her ex-boyfriend Jason. Instead, the call was from his brother: Jason had been killed in a motorcycle accident. He was twenty-three years old. She had seen him alive just a few weeks earlier. Leigh first met Jason at an audition for a tragic play. He was nineteen and troubled and intensely magnetic, a dead ringer for James Dean. Leigh was twenty-two and living at home with her parents, trying to figure out what to do with her young adult life. Within months, they had fallen in love and moved to New Mexico, the “Land of Enchantment,” a place neither of them had ever been. But what was supposed to be a romantic adventure quickly turned sinister, as Jason’s behavior went from playful and spontaneous to controlling and erratic, eventually escalating to violence. Now New Mexico was marked by isolation and the anxiety of how to leave a man she both loved and feared. Even once Leigh moved on to New York, throwing herself into her work, Jason and their time together haunted her. Land of Enchantment lyrically explores the heartbreaking complexity of why the person hurting you the most can be impossible to leave. With searing honesty and cutting humor, Leigh wrestles with what made her fall in love with someone so destructive and how to grieve a man who wasn’t always good to her.

Book Tolkien Enchantment and Loss

Download or read book Tolkien Enchantment and Loss written by John Rosegrant and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tolkien's enchanted worldview as literary form and as psychological struggle Focusing on the themes of enchantment and loss in the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien, this unique study incorporates elements of developmental psychology to explore both Tolkien's life and art, deepening our understanding of the interrelationship between his biography and writing. As John Rosegrant relates, Tolkien's early years saw a good deal of trauma: the loss of both parents, serious illness, poverty, and battlefield action during World War I, including the loss of close friends. Yet he presents an enchanted worldview in the stories of Middle-earth, and that tension between enchantment and disenchantment--as it results from significant trauma and loss--lies at the very heart of Tolkien's creative endeavors. In short, Tolkien's creative effort can be understood, especially from the perspective of his own psychological development, as a way to maintain a sense of enchantment in the face of great personal loss. Throughout our lives, at several stages we must surrender earlier forms of enchantment and develop more mature forms so that life does not become barren, drab, or dismal. As Rosegrant argues, Tolkien found ways to use his personal losses and struggles to address universal psychological issues in his art, giving his work great emotional sophistication and complexity. Tolkien, Enchantment, and Loss both deepens our understanding of Tolkien and helps us to recognize how Tolkien widens and enriches our understanding of life.
