Book France on the Eve of Revolution

Download or read book France on the Eve of Revolution written by John Lough and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Terror and then the Napoleonic Wars made it impracticable to travel through France, many young British men and women were able to watch at first hand the changes taking place in French society an the agitations that were becoming increasingly loud for reform. This book, originally published in 1987, is a study of France in these crucial years seen through the eyes of the travellers. It marries the travellers’ accounts to analysis of the political state of France to produce a book equally illuminating of British taste and attitudies to France, and of the French political and social scene.

Book Andalucia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Edwards
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2016-09-23
  • ISBN : 0857728652
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Andalucia written by Andrew Edwards and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andalucia is the quintessence of Spain and yet, historically and culturally, it is surprisingly unlike the rest of the country. Its literary history began to develop with the Romans and reached an early flowering when Arabic poets drew on centuries of literary tradition, together with the landscapes and passions of Moorish Spain. Later, Prosper Mérimée, Byron and Washington Irving forged legends of exotic southern Spain that persist to this day and Spanish writers themselves captured the rich tapestry of Andalucian culture, from Cervantes' Seville to the Córdoba of Baroque poet Luis de Góngora and Lorca's 'hidden Andalucia'. With the advent of the Civil War, a new generation flocked to Andalucia and were inspired to write some of the twentieth century's most iconic works of literature, from Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls to Gerald Brenan's The Spanish Labyrinth and Laurie Lee's trilogy of books. As vibrant and compelling as the region itself, Andalucia: A Literary Guide for Travellers illuminates the very soul of Spain.

Book In Defence of Women

Download or read book In Defence of Women written by and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of the eighteenth century opened Spain to an influx of people, books and ideas and gave the country its own brief age of Enlightenment. At this time of momentous change, the three authors represented in this volume contributed to the Europe-wide debate over the nature of women and their position in society. Benito Jerónimo Feijoo was an admired scholar and a prolific author. One of his most controversial essays was Defence of Women, which argued that women were men's intellectual equals. This sparked a pamphlet war that continued for twenty-five years. Josefa Amar y Borbón was a writer and translator who submitted her own spirited argument, the Defence of the Talents of Women, to a debate on whether women should be admitted to the new Economic Societies. She also demanded in her Discourse on the Education of Women that women should be given the opportunity to study and learn. At the very end of the century, Inés Joyes y Blake published an Apology for Women, arguing that women should develop self-respect, support each other and refuse to be manipulated by insincere lovers and domineering husbands. All three writers wrote with verve and imagination about one of the most important social questions of their day

Book excerpt: This is not a book about trains but about the variety of Spain. Bestselling author Christopher Howse makes ten great railway journeys that explore the interior of the peninsula, its astonishing landscapes and ancient buildings. The focus is the way the Spanish live now: their habits, streets, characters, stories – and quite a bit about their eating and drinking. Christopher Howse has been travelling around Spain for 25 years, and has now made a 3,000 mile circumnavigation by train from the top of the Pyrenees – through the vulture-haunted wilds of Extremadura and the Spaghetti Western deserts of the south, to the ancient hilltop city of Cuenca and beyond. On the way he meets troglodytes, visits a city ruined by an earthquake, runs into a dancing lion, stumbles across a body-snatching plot and tries out a recipe for acorn pie. An entertaining exploration of a much-loved country, The Train in Spain gives a fascinating and entirely original portrait of a strange land at a time of great change.

Book Mapping Spatial Relations Their Perceptions and Dynamics

Download or read book Mapping Spatial Relations Their Perceptions and Dynamics written by Susanne Rau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the product of an eponymous workshop, which took place in Erfurt in May, 2012, and which has since then been supplemented with four further contributions. The topics focus on the potential mapping of perceived urban space and spatial hierarchies as a consequence of social usage (undertaken by a variety of active participants) together with spatio-temporal changes as a result of factors such as demographic urban growth and decline. Historians, cartographers and geographers are brought together to present and discuss different models, ideas and new methods of spatial analysis and modes of representing changes in perceptions. The two main subjects are: the epistemology of spatial change and the question of (historical) media and adequate presentation. This work represents a first step toward the development of a new model for mapping urban changes and spatial relations concerning the past, present and future.
