Download or read book Derived Embodiment in Abstract Language written by Theresa Schilhab and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does knowledge of phenomena and events we have no direct experiences of emerge? Having a brain that learns from being in the world, how can we conceive of prehistoric dinosaurs, Atlantis, unicorns or even ‘desire’? This book is about how abstract knowledge becomes anchored in direct experiences through well-formed conversations. Within the framework of evolutionary biology and through the lens of contemporary studies in cognitive science, the neurosciences, sociology and anthropology, this book traces topics such as our inborn sensitivity to the environment, bottom-up and top-down processes in knowledge formation and the importance of language when we learn to categorise the world. A major objective of this monograph is to identify the key determinants of the specific interactivity mechanisms that control the cognitive processes while we are linguistically immersed. The emphasis is on real-life interactions in conversations. While the concrete word-object paradigm depends relatively more on direct experiences, the successful acquisition of abstract knowledge depends on the emphatic skills of the interlocutor. He or she must remain sensitive to the level and quality of the imagination of the child while making mental tableaus that are believed to elicit images to which the child associates the concept. Derived embodiment in abstract thought is a landmark synthesis that operationalizes contemporary neuroscience studies of acquisition of knowledge in the real life conversational context. The result is an exciting biology-based contribution to theories of knowledge acquisition and thinking in sociology, cognitive robotics, anthropology and not at least, pedagogy.

This book was released on 2019-01-17 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You don’t know enough about people. People grow and change constantly, impacted by the cultures they create and the global systems that surround them. Conducting People Research is an opportunity for students and professionals in creative, technical and business fields to understand people and use that understanding to drive better outcomes. People Research is for anyone whose work is dependent on people as customers or constituents. It leverages the expertise of the humanities to drive innovation and value across industries. People Research starts with a mindset shift: get ready to ask questions and admit to what you don’t know about people, or where you’ve been just guessing. By developing an inquiry, working with some basic tools and engaging with people you will quickly gain insight about the situations they experience and identify new opportunities, setting direction for the future. This book is a guide to succeeding at People Research. Presented here is a basic framework for conducting research with people to inform design. This framework is focused on describing key decision points and thinking cues in the planning, engagement, analysis and sharing of research. But this book doesn’t simply describe a process; it’s a handbook that includes worksheets, tools and tips for people who plan to actually conduct people research for work or school. Throughout the book, readers can follow a sample project undertaken by a fictional team conducting research, creating insights and finding some new product opportunities their company is positioned to fill. By doing research thoroughly and well, you position yourself and your organization to derive value from the effort and leverage it to make the right things, in ways that serve people. This is a practical, hands-on guide that you will refer to again and again as you build experiences doing your own People Research. --publisher's website.

Download or read book Social Change and Sustainable Transport written by William Richard Black and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2002-11-29 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation research has traditionally been dominated by engineering and logistics research approaches. This book integrates social, economic, and behavioral sciences into the transportation field. As its title indicates, emphasis is on socioeconomic changes, which increasingly govern the development of the transportation sector. The papers presented here originated at a conference on Social Change and Sustainable Transport held at the University of California at Berkeley in March 1999, under the auspices of the European Science Foundation and the National Science Foundation. The contributors, who represent a range of disciplines, including geography and regional science, economics, political science, sociology, and psychology, come from twelve different countries. Their subjects cover the consequences of environmentally sustainable transportation vs. the "business-as-usual" status quo, the new phenomenon of "edge cities," automobile dependence as a social problem, the influence of leisure or discretionary travel and of company cars, the problems of freight transport, the future of railroads in Europe, the imposition of electronic road tolls, potential transport benefits of e-commerce, and the electric car.
Download or read book The Old Curiosity Shop written by Charles Dickens and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is impossible to overstate the importance of British novelist CHARLES DICKENS (1812-1870) not only to literature in the English language, but to Western civilization on the whole. He is arguably the first fiction writer to have become an international celebrity. He popularized episodic fiction and the cliffhanger, which had a profound influence on the development of film and television. He is entirely responsible for the popular image of Victorian London that still lingers today, and his characters-from Oliver Twist to Ebenezer Scrooge, from Miss Havisham to Uriah Heep-have become not merely iconic, but mythic. But it was his stirring portraits of ordinary people-not the upper classes or the aristocracy-and his fervent cries for social, moral, and legal justice for the working poor, and in particular for poor children, in the grim early decades of the Industrial Revolution that powerfully impacted social concerns well into the 20th century. Without Charles Dickens, we may never have seen the likes of Sherlock Holmes, Upton Sinclair, or even Bob Dylan. Here, in 30 beautiful volumes-complete with all the original illustrations-is every published word written by one of the most important writers ever. The essential collector's set will delight anyone who cherishes English literature...and who takes pleasure in constantly rediscovering its joys. This volume contains Part II of The Old Curiosity Shop, which was originally serialized in Dickens's own periodical, Master Humphrey's Clock, in 1840 and 1841. The story of the orphan Nell Trent, who lives with her grandfather in the establishment by which the book takes its name, it is both beloved and disparaged for Dickens's treatment of, as Oscar Wilde famously termed it, "the death of little Nell," the suspense surrounding which was comparable to the Harry Potter phenomenon of today.

Download or read book Alices Derives in Devonshire written by Phil Smith and published by Triarchy Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World of Fact: The novel draws on the author's longtime exploration of psychogeography, Situationism, drift and derive, and fleshes out his practice of mythogeography through the curious mind of a young girl exploring the gaps between her parents' respective worlds and her own; between the city that she sees and the one that she finds when she walks out into it; between the layers of possible experience. It's a quite remarkable journey for anyone interested in those subjects, in what it's like to upgrade (whether as an adolescent or as an adult), or in the tears in the fabric of things that we mostly manage to ignore. World of Dream: "e;Can a city fall to bits one day and put itself back together the next? I think so, but I am crazy. So why should you believe me? Dad says it's OK to be mad. Bad is the problem. And the city is bad. I saw its badness. For one day its glass was everywhere like broken teeth after a fight between lions and sharks. Big buildings leaning on each other like drunk dinosaurs. The new shopping centre was a cave full of smoke. And everyone was frightened of each other. But I wasn't frightened. I could see that between the pieces of glass were shining gaps. And in the biggest building were passageways and tunnels and I could see that that was the good city. The city of holes and caves. Between the bad was the good, but only if you knew that before you looked. A little while later - I'm not sure how long because that was when I was ill again - the bigger cities burned for real; life had a really bad dream. By then, though, I knew that the cities were always ruins, no matter what they looked like. And that you had to know how to see fire to find warmth."e;
