Book excerpt: An insightful look into the central role of religious community in the largest contemporary wave of new immigrants to New York Chinatown yet God in Chinatown is a path breaking study of the largest contemporary wave of new immigrants to Chinatown. Since the 1980s, tens of thousands of mostly rural Chinese have migrated from Fuzhou, on China’s southeastern coast, to New York’s Chinatown. Like the Cantonese who comprised the previous wave of migrants, the Fuzhou have brought with them their religious beliefs, practices, and local deities. In recent years these immigrants have established numerous specifically Fuzhounese religious communities, ranging from Buddhist, Daoist, and Chinese popular religion to Protestant and Catholic Christianity. This ethnographic study examines the central role of these religious communities in the immigrant incorporation process in Chinatown’s highly stratified ethnic enclave, as well as the transnational networks established between religious communities in New York and China. The author’s knowledge of Chinese coupled with his extensive fieldwork in both China and New York enable him to illuminate how these networks transmit religious and social dynamics to the United States, as well as how these new American institutions influence religious and social relations in the religious revival sweeping southeastern China. God in Chinatown is the first study to bring to light religion's significant role in the Fuzhounese immigrants’ dramatic transformation of the face of New York’s Chinatown.

Book excerpt: Gentrification and displacement of low-income communities of color are major issues in New York City and the city’s zoning policies are a major cause. Race matters but the city ignores it when shaping land use and housing policies. The city promises “affordable housing” that is not truly affordable. Zoned Out! shows how this has played in Williamsburg, Harlem and Chinatown, neighborhoods facing massive displacement of people of color. It looks at ways the city can address inequalities, promote authentic community-based planning and develop housing in the public domain. Tom Angotti and Sylvia Morse frame the revised edition of this seminal work with a tribute to the late urbanist and architect Michael Sorkin and his progressive and revolutionary approaches to cities as well as a new preface about changes in city policy since Mayor Bill de Blasio left office and what rights citizens need to defend. The book includes a foreword by the late, distinguished urban planning educator Peter Marcuse and individual chapters by community activist Philip DePaola, housing policy analyst Samuel Stein, and both the editors.

Book Housing in Chinatown

Download or read book Housing in Chinatown written by San Francisco City Planning Department and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Housing in Chinatown: Issue Paper #2 for Discussion at Community Forums on Chinatown Planning and Rezoning Study The February 28 and 29, 1984 community forums on the environmental setting of Chinatown indicated a deep concern with the need for housing in Chinatown. George Suey said, Thousands of people are waiting for housing in this Chinatown Core Area. The priority in the Chinatown Area is housing, and more housing. Former San Francisco Planning Director Allan Jacobs reflected on they long it took and what it took to get housing, especially affordable housing which suggested the overwhelming importance of being extremely cautious with housing that exists right now. This issue paper focuses on housing a major component of Chinatown's function as a residential village in balance with its roles as a major visitor attraction and as a capital city for the Chinese population of the Bay Area. Book Home Environments

Download or read book Home Environments written by Irwin Altman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume in the series focuses on homes, residences, and dwellings. Although many fields have had a long-standing interest in different aspects of home environments, the topic has recently come to the forefront in the interdisciplinary environment and behavior field. Researchers and theorists from many disciplines have begun to meet regularly, share ideas and perspectives, and move the investigation of psychological, social, and behavioral aspects of home environments to the central arena of environment and behavior studies. This volume representative-though not comprehensive attempts to provide a sampling of contemporary perspectives on the study of home environments. As in previous volumes, the authors are drawn from a variety of disciplines, including environmental design fields of architecture and planning, and from the social science fields of psychology, sociology, anthropology, and history. This diversity of authors and perspectives makes salient the principle that the study of homes in relation to behav ior requires the contributions of many disciplines. Moreover, the chap ters in this volume reflect an array of research and theoretical view points, different scales of home environments (e.g., objects and areas, the home as a whole, the home as embedded in neighborhood and communities, etc.), design and policy issues, and, necessarily, a com parative and cross-cultural perspective. Home environments are at the core of human life in most cultures, and it is hoped that the contributions to this volume display the excite ment, potential, and importance of research and theory on homes.

Book Small Property Ownership in Chinatown

Download or read book Small Property Ownership in Chinatown written by Ya Hsuan Yang and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project investigates property ownership in Manhattan's Chinatown -- in particular, the project explores the questions of who owns property in Chinatown, who counts as a small property owner, and to what extent property owners, relative to other types of property owners, were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Welcome to Chinatown commissioned this research to better understand the landscape of property owners currently in the neighborhood. This is motivated by two related concerns: first, the pandemic has had significant economic consequences for both renters and property owners across New York City, and second, there is concern that the neighborhood's independent and small property owners, as a result of the pandemic, would be motivated to sell off their properties to larger investors, which may alter the neighborhood's character. Using New York City's property records data (ACRIS), the project categorized the study area's property owners into six categories based on two variables, number of units the owner owns across New York City, and number of transactions (a purchase or a sale) the owner had been involved in since 2010.
