Clemen's daughter Susy Clemens, who died in 1896 at age 24 of spinal meningitis, is understood to be inspiration for lead character Cathy Alison. When Clemens provided the story to Harper's, he included a photograph of Susy for the illustrator to use for Cathy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Talking Horse: And Other Tales He puzzled and interested me so much that I did my best to enter into conversation with him, only to be baffled by the jerky embarrassment with which he met all advances, and when we got out at Esher, curiosity led me to keep him still in view. Evidently he had not come with any intention of making money. He avoided the grand stand, with the bookmakers huddling in couples, like hoarse love birds; he kept away from the members' inclosure, where the Guards' band was endeavouring to defy the elements which emptied their vials into the brazen instruments; he drifted listlessly about the course till the clearing-bell rang, and it seemed as if he was searching for some one whom he only wished to dis cover in order to avoid. There are horse shows every Sunday but Quincy does not know how to jump and win ribbons. He struggles with this troubling secret until he makes a new friend, an old horse named Beau. When Quincy confides in Beau, he finds an unexpected answer to his problem. This comforting story is a debut for New Mexico author/illustrator team, Camille Matthews and Michelle Black and shows a knowledge and love of horses and attention to details of horse life that instills the book with authenticity. Through an exploration of the whole range of Quincy's feelings, worries and observations, author Camille Matthews encourages young readers to empathize with him as he tries to make sense of the changes and challenges he is experiencing. Further fostering an in depth experience, Black's artistic style is realistic but at the same time rich with color and detail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When troubled twenty-one-year-old Seamus Blake meets the enigmatic Jimmy (just arrived in San Francisco by bicycle from his hometown in Buffalo, New York), he feels his life may finally be taking off. But the ensuing romance proves short-lived as Jimmy dies of an AIDS-related illness. The grieving Seamus is obliged to keep a promise: "Take me back the way I came," Jimmy had asked. And so Seamus sets out by bicycle on a picaresque journey with the ashes, hoping to bring them back to Buffalo. He meets truck drivers, waitresses, Native Americans, college kids, farmers, ranchers, and Marines--each one giving him a new perspective on his own life and on Jimmy's death. When he falls in man whose mother has also recently died, Seamus's grief and his story become universal and redemptive. Award-winning novelist Trebor Healey depicts San Francisco in the 1980s and '90s in poetic prose that is both ribald and poignant, and a crossing into the American West that is dreamy, mythic, mystifying."--Publisher's description.
