Book A Homicide in Hooker s Point

Download or read book A Homicide in Hooker s Point written by Gloria Taylor Weinberg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a quintessential storyteller at the top of her form, Gloria Taylor Weinberg delves into the sometimes painful realities of life to produce a hauntingly unforgettable novel. In the fall of 1950, eight-year old Vicki Leigh Bayle learns that prejudice is not always about color, and that truth, as adults define it, is malleable. She learns that love and hate are drawn from the same well, and that some of the people she loves most keep stores of each in equal measure. The day after neighbor Eric Magruder kills her kitten during a domestic dispute, Vicki and her father watch as Eric is gunned down in their front yard. Witnesses say he was killed by his father-in-law. But is that really what happened during that tragic weekend of violence? At least one investigator has doubts. Both Vicki and her father had access to a gun that day, and her father refuses to produce it. Why? A Homicide in Hookers Point is a fascinating tale of innocence and pathos colliding in a small community in rural South Florida. The story develops inexorably; building momentum as it evolves, all the while tempting the reader to linger over passages of lush, evocative imagery. I was struck by the authors insightful portrayal of people and places, which brought back fond memories of the simple, authentic life experiences that I had growing up in Clewiston near Hookers Point. -- Erik C. Larsen, Attorney, Winter Park, Florida.

Book excerpt: Harald van Fleeceman managed to die the same way he had churned through life - by putting the touch on everybody he could get hold of, leaving a trail of IOUs he couldn't pay off in a thousand years and fooling everyone including himself about what he was up to. Van Fleeceman's fondness for luxury cars was astounding for a priest. First, it was a new Volvo, the modest 240 model but that one didn't last long until it was traded for the larger 940. That was a mere interlude on the way to a shiny green Audi but it was too small as was a Mercedes Benz. Finally he got into the BMWs, first a 636i and then a 735i and finally a magnificent Pearl Gray 741il. How did he finance all of these cars? Loans upon more loans upon even more loans. From The Great Fleeceman It was one of the dumbest jobs I ever got but then there aren't all that many jobs for ex-priests. I was probably damn fortunate to get signed on driving a double trailer rig filled with empty beer cans. You picked up the trailers at the trucking terminal, went down the road about thirty miles to the can plant and waited around until the jackasses got good and ready to load your trailers. That usually took a couple of hours since they loaded their pals' trailers first and took two or three breaks in between. Then when you finally had two trailers filled to their roofs with pallets of cans, you hit the New York Thruway heading for the brewery, a hundred ninety miles west. When you got there it was more hanging around while more jackasses unloaded the cans so you could back on the Thruway. I hauled lots of cans before I got canned. From Empty Cans

Book excerpt: Thrilling, true tales from the Vidocq Society, a team of the world's finest forensic investigators whose monthly gourmet lunches lead to justice in ice-cold murders Three of the greatest detectives in the world--a renowned FBI agent turned private eye, a sculptor and lothario who speaks to the dead, and an eccentric profiler known as "the living Sherlock Holmes"-were heartsick over the growing tide of unsolved murders. Good friends and sometime rivals William Fleisher, Frank Bender, and Richard Walter decided one day over lunch that something had to be done, and pledged themselves to a grand quest for justice. The three men invited the greatest collection of forensic investigators ever assembled, drawn from five continents, to the Downtown Club in Philadelphia to begin an audacious quest: to bring the coldest killers in the world to an accounting. Named for the first modern detective, the Parisian eugène François Vidocq-the flamboyant Napoleonic real-life sleuth who inspired Sherlock Holmes-the Vidocq Society meets monthly in its secretive chambers to solve a cold murder over a gourmet lunch. The Murder Room draws the reader into a chilling, darkly humorous, awe-inspiring world as the three partners travel far from their Victorian dining room to hunt the ruthless killers of a millionaire's son, a serial killer who carves off faces, and a child killer enjoying fifty years of freedom and dark fantasy. Acclaimed bestselling author Michael Capuzzo's brilliant storytelling brings true crime to life more realistically and vividly than it has ever been portrayed before. It is a world of dazzlingly bright forensic science; true evil as old as the Bible and dark as the pages of Dostoevsky; and a group of flawed, passionate men and women, inspired by their own wounded hearts to make a stand for truth, goodness, and justice in a world gone mad.

Book The Murder of Helen Jewett

Download or read book The Murder of Helen Jewett written by Patricia Cline Cohen and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1999-06-29 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1836, the murder of a young prostitute made headlines in New York City and around the country, inaugurating a sex-and-death sensationalism in news reporting that haunts us today. Patricia Cline Cohen goes behind these first lurid accounts to reconstruct the story of the mysterious victim, Helen Jewett. From her beginnings as a servant girl in Maine, Helen Jewett refashioned herself, using four successive aliases, into a highly paid courtesan. She invented life stories for herself that helped her build a sympathetic clientele among New York City's elite, and she further captivated her customers through her seductive letters, which mixed elements of traditional feminine demureness with sexual boldness. But she was to meet her match--and her nemesis--in a youth called Richard Robinson. He was one of an unprecedented number of young men who flooded into America's burgeoning cities in the 1830s to satisfy the new business society's seemingly infinite need for clerks. The son of an established Connecticut family, he was intense, arrogant, and given to posturing. He became Helen Jewett's lover in a tempestuous affair and ten months later was arrested for her murder. He stood trial in a five-day courtroom drama that ended with his acquittal amid the cheers of hundreds of fellow clerks and other spectators. With no conviction for murder, nor closure of any sort, the case continued to tantalize the public, even though Richard Robinson disappeared from view. Through the Erie Canal, down the Ohio and the Mississippi, and by way of New Orleans, he reached the wilds of Texas and a new life under a new name. Through her meticulous and ingenious research, Patricia Cline Cohen traces his life there and the many twists and turns of the lingering mystery of the murder. Her stunning portrayals of Helen Jewett, Robinson, and their raffish, colorful nineteenth-century world make vivid a frenetic city life and sexual morality whose complexities, contradictions, and concerns resonate with those of our own time.

Book Spaces Worlds and Grammar

Download or read book Spaces Worlds and Grammar written by Gilles Fauconnier and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996-12 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the highly influential mental-spaces framework developed by Gilles Fauconnier in the mid-1980s, the mind creates multiple cognitive "spaces" to mediate its understanding of relations and activities in the world, and to engage in creative thought. These twelve original papers extend the mental-spaces framework and demonstrate its utility in solving deep problems in linguistics and discourse theory. Investigating the ties between mental constructs, they analyze a wide range of phenomena, including analogical counterfactuals; the metaphor system for conceptualizing the self; abstract change expressions in Japanese; mood in Spanish; deictic expressions; copular sentences in Japanese; conditional constructions; and reference in American Sign Language. The ground-breaking research presented in this volume will be of interest to linguists and cognitive scientists. The contributors are Claudia Brugman, Gilles Fauconnier, George Lakoff, Yo Matsumoto, Errapel Mejias-Bikandi, Laura A. Michaelis, Gisela Redeker, Jo Rubba, Shigeru Sakahara, Jose Sanders, Eve Sweetser, and Karen van Hoek.

Book F ck Fifty Hookers Or Be Resigned To A Life Of Loneliness A Pulp Satire

Download or read book F ck Fifty Hookers Or Be Resigned To A Life Of Loneliness A Pulp Satire written by Spencer Honor and published by Spencer Honor. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only (living/dead/real/unreal) person the lonely protagonist of F*CK FIFTY HOOKERS (OR BE RESIGNED TO A LIFE OF LONELINESS): A PULP SATIRE can identify with is Travis Bickle because like the "Taxi Driver," he so desperately wants to connect with others, but just can't. Everything changes though when his dog, Henry, begins talking to him and reveals what he must do if he truly doesn't want to live this "life of loneliness" anymore. Influenced by the humor of Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut, F*CK FIFTY HOOKERS is a satirical riff on modern life and the nonsensical "first world" lives people lead. This book contains two bonus short stories: YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH MURDER IF YOU'RE NOT THERE TO COMMIT IT – a conscienceless man has the ability to “leap” to different points in his life (“Confused? Let me explain my “superpower” to you with a simple example,” says the protagonist. “Let’s say I’m stuck in a dead end job right now that pays shit and I want a better life. All I would need to then do is look up today’s winning lottery numbers, leap back to yesterday, buy a ticket with those numbers and then bam - I’m a fuckin millionaire now and can tell my asshole of a boss to go fuck himself.“) and thus avoid the consequences of any and all of the nefarious things he has done. This hunky-dory fate of his comes to a screeching halt when he is confronted by a man who threatens to leave him in the worst reality possible if he doesn't stop leaping. I'D BE A LOT HAPPIER IF I DIDN'T THINK SO MUCH – a depressed man thinks that his psychiatrist isn't actually trying to help him with his issues and is only numbing him with medicine. “I mean if the world really is bad,” says the depressed man. “Then why shouldn't I be affected by it and feel depressed as a result? I’m a human after all and I’m only just reacting to my environment, right?” His “environment” does in fact change though when he decides to stop thinking so much and take two experimental mood medicine without first researching what the pills actually do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famous for its revolutionary aspects in musical, political, sexual identity and consumerist ideas, punk rock also has its lesser-known gangster ethos as well, explained here by players in the various punk gangs. The Los Angeles, Orange County, and South Bay punk scenes, populated by blue collar kids who responded to the violence and aggression of punk songs and shows. A number of them formed punk gangs that got into beatings, drug dealing and murder. Among them, no gang was more notorious than La Mirada Punks, or LMP. Says LMP chieftain Frank the Shank after getting arrested by police for murder: "After having my hands in so much bloodshed over the years, I most certainly had it coming. I deserved whatever I got." Unexpectedly Frank was bailed out from prison by his father's friend, a mob gangster. "Too many people died at the hands of punk rock violence," said Frank. "I got lucky, some didn't. As an ultra-violent punk rock gangster, I admit my part in ruining the scene. L.A. punk was a magical moment of youth expression like no other. And the gangs ruined punk rock. I still have people telling me today that they quit punk because of LMP. I dig graves at a small cemetery just outside Los Angeles. What else would you expect for Frank the Shank?"
