Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People who knew J. Heinrich Arnold (1913-1982) say they never met another person like him. In his presence, complete strangers poured out their darkest secrets and left transformed. Others wanted him dead. Author Henri Nouwen called him a prophetic voice and wrote of how his writings touched me as a double-edged sword, calling me to choose between truth and lies, selflessness and selfishness... Few knew Arnold's past, or could have imagined the crucibles he endured. Until now.

Download or read book The Monastic Origins of the Nag Hammadi Codices written by Hugo Lundhaug and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hugo Lundhaug and Lance Jenott offer a sustained argument for the monastic provenance of the Nag Hammadi Codices. They examine the arguments for and against a monastic Sitz im Leben and defend the view that the Codices were produced and read by Christian monks, most likely Pachomians, in the fourth- and fifth-century monasteries of Upper Egypt. Eschewing the modern classification of the Nag Hammadi texts as “Gnostic,” the authors approach the codices and their ancient owners from the perspective of the diverse monastic culture of late antique Egypt and situate them in the context of the ongoing controversies over extra-canonical literature and the theological legacy of Origen. Through a combination of sources, including idealized hagiographies, travelogues, monastic rules and exhortations, and the more quotidian details revealed in documentary papyri, manuscript collections, and archaeology, monasticism in the Thebaid is brought to life, and the Nag Hammadi codices situated within it. The cartonnage papyri from the leather covers of the codices, which bear witness to the monastic culture of the region, are closely examined, while scribal and codicological features of the codices are analyzed and compared with contemporary manuscripts from Egypt. Special attention is given to the codices’ scribal notes and colophons which offer direct evidence of their producers and users. The study ultimately reveals the Nag Hammadi Codices as a collection of books completely at home in the monastic manuscript culture of late antique Egypt."--
Download or read book Preaching Christ from Psalms written by Sidney Greidanus and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this penultimate volume of his series on preaching Christ from the Old Testament, Sidney Greidanus offers expert guidance for busy pastors on preaching Christ from Psalms. Beginning with a general introduction on how pastors can interpret and preach from the biblical psalms — and why they should — Greidanus proceeds by discussing twenty-two psalms in the Revised Common Lectionary, Year A, supplying the building blocks necessary to preach from Psalms at Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, and other major days and seasons of the church year. In addition to laying out basic homiletical-theological approaches suitable for each selected psalm, these chapters also provide verse-by-verse exposition, bridges to Christ in the New Testament, and ideas for placing the psalmist’s words into contemporary context.

Download or read book Sacra Pagina The Gospel of Matthew written by Daniel J. Harrington, SJ and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew wrote his Gospel from his perspective as a Jew. It is with sensitivity to this perspective that Father Harrington undertakes this commentary on the Gospel of Matthew. After an introduction, he provides a literal translation of each section in Matthew's Gospel and explains the textual problems, philological difficulties, and other matters in the notes. He then presents a literary analysis of each text (content, form, use of sources, structure), examines the text against its Jewish background, situates it in the context of Matthew's debate with other first-century Jews, and reflects on its significance for Christian theology and Christian-Jewish relations. Bibliographies direct the reader to other important modern studies.
