Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Municipal Church of St. Lawrence: Reading The archives of St. Lawrence's Church, in Reading, are amongst the oldest and most interesting in England. They commence in 1410, and are tolerably complete down to the present time. The earlier details are so graphic, that they afford not only a wonderful insight into the history and changes of the fabric, the exquisite nature of its furniture and decorations - so valuable to the ecclesiologist and art student - but also illustrate to a great extent the parochial life of the fifteenth and following centuries. It is quite beyond the Author's means to publish the documents in extenso, but he has endeavoured to illustrate, by hundreds of literal extracts, the various points of interest connected with the Church, and the manners and customs of the people; so that the present work will be found to contain all that is really interesting in the records, not only to the antiquary, but to the general reader. In many respects this work may be considered a typical history of every parish church in England - everywhere the ancient centre of parochial life; and it is on this account chiefly that the Author has felt justified and encouraged in his responsible undertaking. Book Church Building and Society in the Later Middle Ages

Download or read book Church Building and Society in the Later Middle Ages written by Gabriel Byng and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of a church was undoubtedly one of the most demanding events to take place in the life of a medieval parish. It required a huge outlay of time, money and labour, and often a new organisational structure to oversee design and management. Who took control and who provided the financing was deeply shaped by local patterns in wealth, authority and institutional development - from small villages with little formal government to settlements with highly unequal populations. This all took place during a period of great economic and social change as communities managed the impact of the Black Death, the end of serfdom and the slump of the mid-fifteenth century. This original and authoritative study provides an account of how economic change, local politics and architecture combined in late-medieval England. It will be of interest to researchers of medieval, socio-economic and art history.

Book Women and Religion in England

Download or read book Women and Religion in England written by Patricia Crawford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patricia Crawford explores how the study of gender can enhance our understanding of religious history, in this study of women and their apprehensions of God in early modern England. The book has three broad themes: the role of women in the religious upheaval in the period from the Reformation to the Restoration; the significance of religion to contemporary women, focusing on the range of practices and beliefs; and the role of gender in the period. The author argues that religion in the early modern period cannot be understood without a perception of the gendered nature of its beliefs, institutions and language. Contemporary religious ideology reinforced women's inferior position, but, as the author shows, it was possible for some women to transcend these beliefs and profoundly influence history.
