Book The Revolutionary War in Bennington County

Download or read book The Revolutionary War in Bennington County written by Richard B. Smith and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journey back to the Spring of 1775, when Bennington County, Vermont, was no more than the wild frontier of the northern territory. It was from here that the first victory of the American Revolution was won, when Patriot Ethan Allen led the famed Green Mountain Boys to raid and capture towering Fort Ticonderoga from the British. Two years later, the British were again defeated at the Battle of Bennington, suffering two hundred casualties and the staggering capture of more than seven hundred soldiers by another Patriot, John Stark. Dick Smith takes readers through the famed covered bridges, historic taverns and quaint villages of Bennington County that in another life played a vital role in leading our country toward independence.

Book The Battle of Bennington Soldiers Civilians

Download or read book The Battle of Bennington Soldiers Civilians written by Michael P. Gabriel and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-20 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 16, 1777, a motley militia won a resounding victory near Bennington, Vermont, against combined German, British and Loyalist forces. This laid the foundation for the American victory at Saratoga two months later. Historian Michael P. Gabriel has collected over fifty firsthand accounts from the people who experienced this engagement, including veterans from both sides and civilians--women and children who witnessed the horrors of the battle. Gabriel also details a virtually unknown skirmish between Americans and Loyalists. These accounts, along with Gabriel's overviews of the battle, bring to life the terror, fear and uncertainty that caused thousands to see the British army as loved ones departed to fight for the fledgling United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Bennington: An Address Before the Vermont Historical Society The attempt of Hon. 8. D. Locke in the April, 1892, number of the National Magazine of American His tory, to change the long established and accepted facts connected with the Battle of Bennington, is a marked specimen of perseverance in the perversion of history. That those unacquainted with all the facts, who may not have easy access to the history made and noted at the time, or shortly after its happening, may fully under stand it, a review of the article at some length may not be inappropriate. While sometimes it may appear to the conservative mind to be too aggressive, considering the long quiet which has reigned between the Grants and the Yorkers, the excuse is, that the provocation has been given and can only be fairly met by considering some things, that by common consent have for many years been left to rest, and it has been hoped might remain forever in repose. And, though matters may be treated which had better not be, except for the challenge offered and in the interest of a proper understanding of all the facts in their several bearings, still will it be in a spirit of fairness, and with a desire to allay rather than to foster division and prejudice. The endeavor will be before closing, to leave nothing about the story of the battle, but truth relieved of theory and imagination. The paper begins with stating, that, much that has been written as history, even by our best equipped writers, is confused with error or quite false. And, as illustrating his meaning by conspicuous examples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
